Does it make you feel very small standing next to such giants??

They are free standing. I generally don't use stakes unless it's a variety that I am trying to save seed because I'm running low, or it was something given to me and I only have a handful of seed.

I do a few things with fertilizer, but the most important thing with giant plants is to find the variety that gets the largest. Most of my work is done on the internet. I spend countless hours searching news articles and websites for information about giant plants. There are gardeners with a much better understanding of soil than me. I know enough to get my plants big. It's finding the best genetics is the challenge.

David, I'm not sure on this variety. It was at a public garden.

Do you know what variety of sunflower this is Gardengem? Only one this colour I can find is called "Black Magic", and wondered if this is it.

Hmm....they do make edible inks for cakes. I have also seen chocolate-covered sunflower seeds before...might be a better option :)

Chocolate that doesn't melt on a hot day (actually thrives in it). Love it!

They seem to grow well here. This was at a local formal garden. Some of them were so dark they were almost chocolate brown. They were so pretty! I tried to grow sunflowers this summer, but they didn't make it past seedlings. I'll probably try again next year. :)

I remember putting several of these in my garage to dry out...I forgot about them for a couple of weeks, when I went back the mice had all the seeds out....Surprised I didn't see 5 lbs mice that year!
There are squirrels here where I live, but never see them here in teh city...And no rabbits..And no deer... And no, I'm not complaining...:)

they grew about 5-7feet, and were in a whiskey barrell about 3 feet off the ground....maybe 6 inches across, but produced many blooms after the initial bloom

Hi, Aleatha, Welcome to GOY.
I had a dwarf sunflower this year that came in a mixture. It looked very much like this. Do you know the color name? I'm curious!

What an unusual flower, is this one a dahlia, too? I love the two colour effect.

Yes, me too Spritz, have been pulling them up today, but they are so pretty
especially this year with the lack of sunshine.

Wow, it doesn't look as if a single one is missing. What a lovely pattern the seeds are in. Does anybody remember that art contraption where you trace circles in different colors, sizes and positions to make designs? That what this is reminding me of. Or mosiac tile work, lovely.

We have red squirrels in Hungary but they seem to stay in the wooded areas and we don't see them very often.

What some place with no squirrels. How did you manage that?
