Genus: Gladiolus
Gladioli or Gladioluses are sometimes called sword lilies and it is not difficult to imagine why as their fragrant flowers grow in large one-sided spikes.

Katcod - the Clematis and the roses are attached to horizontal wires. I tie the new shoots of the roses in with plant ties each year and the Clematis looks after itself now, having been trained many years ago by our predecesors.
Lata - what a lovely compliment. Thank you for visiting my garden - I'm glad you enjoyed it! I shall tell Henry - he has retired to bed as he has been in all day with a sore paw....I did let him walk around the garden with me but he's a bit unhappy. :-(

Hi Spretz And Henry!! Thought that I just sat down "FOR A MINUTE" and a hour and a half has passed!!! I'm hungry and my laundry is in the middle of the floor waiting. What beautiful pictures you have! ! ! I was lost in your garden and beautiful close ups of every single picture. I'm sure you have thousands of plant fairies hanging out there. Bet you could here thier little wings if it were really quiet! Loved every minute of time spent here even if I didn't get started as soon as I intended.Take care...God Bless ....Lata

Good to know, thanks. I've already ordered clematis montana, waiting for delivery...how are yours attached to the wall? String, trellis or self clinging?

There are 2 climbing roses, a red and a pink - 'Albertine', plus three Clematis montana! The shrub is an Aucuba, not quite sure which variety. It's evergreen and a useful one for 'structure' all the year round.

Very picturesque. Would that be climbing roses on your cottage? What kind of shrub is the large yellow one?

my gladioli have not flowered im glad i read this i thought i hadnt planted them deep enough but now i think its the bad uk summer.
On question - Non-flowering Gladioli
22 Aug, 2008
mine have been very good this year and again they have had loads of rain and also are in different locations. the only thing i can think of is sometimes the bulbs divide, producing lots of baby bulbletts this is obvious as there are lots and lots of little thin leaves with no flowers, instead of a handful of big fat ones which then the flowers appear from. if this is true of yours Spritz i would maybe dig them up at the end of the season and have a look, and if the bulbs have divided you need to replant each one indiviually as they can get overcrouded. the other thing is some do flower later than others depending on variety, they are in season as cut flowers right up until october, and i know from my own experiences i have a blue vareity that does'nt flower until october. and maybe the lack of sun this year could have delayed earlier varieties - lets face it the weather has been more like autumn or spring, not at all like it should be this time of year. so the weather could have delayed your flowers - my blue ones are not producing buds as yet. but the orange and green ones have all flowered lovely. just a couple of thoughts hope this helps.

It sounds as if I should leave them in. Thanks for the responses.

21 Aug, 2008
can't give any answers but just wanted to say my gladioli have'nt flowered this year either
On question - Non-flowering Gladioli
21 Aug, 2008
It could be too much rain and not enough sun. Mine are in sandy soil in various degrees of sun. Some are in quite shady spots and all have flowered. The oldest are in their third flowering season. I take them up and store them dry in the cellar since our winters are colder. So it could be that you've had 2 wet summers in UK, but I'm only guessing.
On question - Non-flowering Gladioli
21 Aug, 2008
I have just one clump of gladioli which reliably flowers every year, except this summer, when only leaves have been produced.
I know we keep blaming everything on the weather, but I think that's the reason there are no flowers for summer 2008.
On question - Non-flowering Gladioli
19 Aug, 2008
to be honest Lori, i don't lift anything! it takes it's chances in my garden or it stays in a pot in the first place so that it is easy to put in the greenhouse through the winter. but they were in last year, and did'nt flower, this year they come up, but they have'nt all flowered as yet, but they did go in late last year so not sure if that is why they did'nt flower at all. also i live greater London - a very built up area, in one of the warmest parts of the county, i do get away with all sorts that i proberly should'nt in my garden. and we did have a very mild winter last year, so if you are in any doubt - and not as lazy as me, the lift them. i did buy 25 bulbs for about a £1.50 - they are quite easy to find here too. i think the name thing on this one is due to a name change, i am not sure which way round it is, but i think they previously did'nt consider this to be a member of the Gladi family, hense the name Acidanthera, but then due to recent developements have realised that it is acutally a member so have re-named it. or is it the other way around? lol i remeber reeding it somewhere quite recently. either way both names are correct and universal.

Here we go with the name game again!! I have these aplenty...but mine were labelled Acidanthera ....I notice you have that name in your tags...
I planted mine in with the canna lilies... and they smell so wonderful..I love these...and they are very reasonable...so you don't have to mortgage the farm to have a nice showing. Do you have to lift yours, Majeeka? or is your climate sufficiently warm to leave them in the ground all winter?

Thank you. I have six young V.bonariensis plants frown from seed waiting to be planted out - this is the first time I've managed to get any to germinate so I'm pleased! Now it's decision time - where to plant them! I do find that cuttings root very easily, though, so 'll be doing that soon. I shall have so many that I might even sell them at the Grand Opening next June! (Money goes to charity, so that would be good.)

thanks Chris, i think it looks more like an orchid than a gladi, don't you? its quite hard to get into flower though. i have planted about 30 bulbs last year, and they all come up blind last summer, but this year i have 3 in flower! the rest are blind agian, but well worth the wait me thinks!
