I know this one too, had several in my garden. The green ants loved them too and often made nests in them. They went a bit floppy and autumny like with brown leaves in winter, but came back as bright as a button again in spring.

Gardengem,
Thanks for posting the information.
I've always grown Acalypha species...they are one of my favorite plants.
The mottled leaf Acalypha was probably the species, wilkesiana. Acalypha wilkesiana has many variegated varieties. It is the most widely grown species of Acalypha grown in Southern California.

Hi Delonix, I just took this pic yesterday. We have local formal garden that I like to go visit and this was one of the plants they didn't have marked. So thank you for identifying it. It is a pretty plant. :)
I would say it was around 5 ft tall give or take. They had another plant right next to it that was very similar, but had mottled leaves. Maybe a different variety? I haven't posted the pic of it yet.

What a beautiful Chenille Plant! (Acalypha hispida)
How large does this plant grow for you?

Yes, Impatients, Pisonia (variegated plant), Alpinia (variegated also), and Ondontonema. I'm not sure about the ground cover though.
This picture was taken at the San Diego Zoo...the drain is for the sprinkler system (I assume). Because we receive so little rain here in San Diego, CA.

It could be the garden next door, are they impatients too those red flowers? Little violets in the foreground? We don't have those! I notice your little drain there, does it get very soggy in winter?

Oh wow, see so many of them here too! They make a nice screening plant, good hedging. I like this pic, as the light shines through from the back.

I have this as a hanging basket; just saw them around this spring. They are marketed as 'Chenille Plant' over here! How amazing it would be to be able to grow them outside year round. They don't really overwinter well here, indoors, as they love the full sun.....
