Its a new one to tried here. I've been looking at some articles on them and they seem to be proven in soucal and now in norcal, hopefully they do well.

Handy to know I hope they do well for you.

Stan,

Are you sure it's Dypsis ambositrae?

Where is it located?

Its labeled that Andy. I have a clear photo of that. Its right at the Tropical Greenhouse entrance..and near the palm collection.
My King palms don't look as green and lush- in May.
How long its been there,I don't know. My previous visit about 3 or 4 years ago, they had Dypsis decipiens in them and maybe an Arenga.

Is this located at the Berkeley Botanical Gardens? I don't think most people know what BBG means...or is it just me? lol!

If it's at Berkeley Botanical Gardens they have everything labeled pretty well there.

Yes,Berkeley. They had two pots of these. Both seemed in near perfect condition and the real warm season hasn't started.
Maybe, they just put them in. I know palmbob-geoff of the palm board said they seemed larger then most in soucal. I did look at some pics of this on palmpedia and a few had fused double trunks. Almost like a branching palm. Great palm.

There's very tall ones (15 - 20' tall) here in San Diego gardens. MattyB on Palmtalk has some really tall mature ones. You can see more on Palmtalk. Some species of Dypsis grow very fast with lots of water and fertilizer.

I doubt I will ever see one for sale around here. Considering how hardy they are..its a wonder you dont see somebody plant a few- a small grove in soucal.

From what I've read D. ambositrae is a variable species. Some grow fast and others slow. I'm sure there's more than you think here SoCal. Dypsis species became very popular and common around 20 years ago here in San Diego. I've seen mature specimens of D. lastelliana, leptocheilos, baronii, madagascariensis, onilahensis, pembana, perrieri, utilis here in San Diego. (this is besides the other common Dypsis species).

The D.baronii and the onilahensis would be on my list to try here.

My friend had a huge D. baronii in Berkeley (who now lives in San Diego County). It was gorgeous! I couldn't believe how fast it grow to 8' and so many trunks. I've seen some really nice D. onilahensis there, also. I grew D. compactus (which I think is baronii now) in Fremont.
