Unusual Poeny

So after my baptism of fire on this site, I was all excited about the comments some of you made that this may be a new strain of poeny!

So I went back in the garden to look at this poeny PROPERLY … and hey ho … here’s what I noticed.

The leaves are in fact more variegated than pigment-less (albino) … This was in fact what some of you experienced members suggested .. and the pics prove it .. there are small patches of green on the leaves.

And then the exciting surprise! Earlier I said that the flower will likely be red/deep pink, same as the rest of the plant….. but …. on close inspection there is a white streak on the petal that is peeking through the sepals!! I bet the flower is going to be variegated! (Can you say that for flowers? or is it just for greenery?)

It will be like Cruella Deville … with a white streak LOL :D

Hi GF and welcome .I'm just dying to see what happens !

hi and welcome to GoY. I had a 'break' like this in a paeony several years ago and the following year all was back to normal. so I suspect it was a genetic 'blip' in the DNA copying in the dormant/breaking bud stage. We had had several very harsh frosts and I suspect that caused the mis-copy.

Aaaah interesting Seaburngirl .... have you got any pics? I'm going to leave it go to seed and I will try to find out how to propagate it vegetatively if I can (have to figure out how to do it) in case it doesn't come back as I quite like it. ...

Oooo now that is interesting look forward to seeing it when it opens :-)
I had a similar thing last year with a hosta half the leaves on the plant opened completely white instead of variegated, know this is how a lot of new hosta's are propagated from different coloured offshoots or 'sports', no such luck, this year its back to normal, never thought of it being the weather SBG.

If there is no root damage/exposure (which can cause the leaves to change colour)? You do not say how old it is but this may need fertilizer as some mineral deficiencies can cause yellowing too. Have you tried a low nitrogen feed as Too much nitrogen will result in abundant foliage growth with little or even no flowers.

Drc, I have never given it any feed. The roots are not exposed that I can see, they are covered with membrane and mulch. I don't know how old it is because it was there when we bought the house in July 2010. I suspect its probably 5 - 10years old. The previous owners had been there for 12 years. I'll find out how to propagate it vegetatively, just out of curiousity to see what the next plant grows as ... then I'll try the low nitrogen feed since I never fed it before .. can't harm surely.

Having said that, the yellowing is not the type you see when leaves are weak in my experience .... but then my experience is very limited :D

Mine are over 12 years old and I feed them every year GF.

no photos that i can find sadly.

to take a cutting follow the stem back to its tuber and then cut it out with some of the tuber. then you may be lucky to get it to survive. but any dormant buds on the tuber may well be normal. the tubers are quite brittle and the fine roots will be damaged so water uptake will be something to watch.

no photos sadly.
trace/follow the pale stem back to the tuber below ground and then cut it out with some of the tuber too. you may be lucky and manage to keep it alive. But if there is very little green it may not have enough chlorophyll to sustain it.

Thanks SG, I will try that, once its finished flowering. Its quite a lazy bud ... still not much change this morning ... I hope it does open!
