Wedding Cake Tree

Genus: Cornus.

Species: Cornus controversa.

There used to be three, but only one remains, which is just as well because though it is slow growing, it gets to be a medium sized tree. If you're still here in 10 years you'll want to chop it down, but until then just enjoy the incredible wedding cake tree in the middle of the garden. It's lovely in winter when the stems are a dark re colour. It flowers in late spring, and it's stunning.

The only problem with it is it occasionally sends up a green shoot, which you need to remove at the base, or the whole tree will eventually revert to plain green. Usually I find one each year and just cut it right off.
