Dracaena

Genus: Dracaena.

Species: Dracaena marginata.

Common name: Dracaena 'Tricolour'
Botannical name: Dracaena marginata 'Tricolour'
Family: Liliaceae

Dracaena marginata is a member of the ancient dragon tree family and is found growing wild in Mauritius. It’s a beautiful plant, with wonderful sword like leaves.

But there is another variety grown for its foliage alone. It’s called Dracaena marginata ‘Tricolor’. The real feature of this plant is its decorative foliage - striped cream, green and pink and it looks absolutely fantastic year round.

It's a fairly slow growing plant, eventually reaching about 3 to 4 metres. It has bold, dramatic foliage, so it's best used en masse. But it also has a wonderful form that looks great in large tubs on a patio or balcony.

Dracaena marginata ‘Tricolor’ grows best in tropical and subtropical gardens. It copes with reasonably cold winters further south, but not frost. It prefers full sun in good, well drained soil. This is one of the easiest plants to care for. Just prune out some of the cane like stems in spring to help promote a nice branching habit. If growing these plants indoors then watch for mealy bug.

Whether grown in bold groups or as an attractive indoor plant, Dracaena marginata ‘Tricolor’ is one of those must have foliage plants that looks spectacular every season.
