East Devon took a bashing,

The weather in Ottery St Mary, East Devon took a turn for the worse last night, as was pointed out to me by TT,
fortunately i live in north devon, so we escaped the worst of it, we are fortunate enough to live between three moors, Dartmoor, Exmoor, and Bodmin moor, so we get sheltered from the worst weather.

Across in the west of the county they had 4" of rain followed by a foot of hail and snow, all in a couple of hours
so imagine all this slush floating around on the floods from the rain,
cars were washed into a local river, while Caravans and houses were flooded, and full of slurry,

Add all this to the bitter cold and it makes you wonder how their gardens coped, i saw 1 house on the local news with their greenhous flatened,
i felt for them i can tell you,

the odd thing is i would be more upset for my greenhouse and garden than my house,

Glad you escaped the bad weather ff. Just one thing - unless it has moved, Ottery St Mary is in East Devon.
I grew up in Devon so know the area

Well spotted Andrew, i was quoting the local news report who obviously got it wrong also, but thats not unusual,

But for those not familier with Devon it just goes to show how the weather can be so unpredictable, and unexpected, especially these days, thanks for pointing out my error,

Rather nasty to say the least,

just seen it on the news, makes our weather look not that bad after all

Yes, it was on the news and looked awful which is why I sent Funkyfuchsia a private message to check if all was well with him down in Devon.

I felt so very sorry for the folk with flooded houses and gardens.

Interesting the items we might save in those circumstances.
I would grab my pets first, I know that for sure.

I've given this blog a 'like' because I like Devon and I hope the people in trouble down there get lots of help. :o)

Thanks TT, since finding this site i hardly ever watch the news anymore, or tv in general,
Goy is much more entetaining,

I didn't see the news yesterday.
Since my mother has been here I get fed up with the tv on all the time so I keep out of the room where it is.
I'm glad you escaped the worst Dave.
I have a soft spot for the north of Devon - My grandfather's family were from there.

Hi hywel, where in north devon did they come from,

i have lived in Wales for a time,my 2nd wife was from Llangollen, we lived half way up the horseshoe pass, which is blocked with snow at the moment, Brrrrrrr,

31 Oct, 2008

They came from Tawstock and Ashford. My Grampa was born in Swansea but he used to call himself a 'Devonshire man'.

I don't know Llangollen. It's a long way from here. I've never been there but I've heard of the horseshoe pass.

Ottery St Mary is very familiar to me because that is where my very favourite Nursery/Garden Centre is. Of course I feel for the folks living in the area - but spare a thought for the wonderful plants grown and nurtured there. I don't suppose that many got off unscathed!

Unheard of to have such weather down there - a freak of nature I suppose.

I like the way that people blame the weatherman, as if he is supposed to know just where a cloud is going to burst,
a refrence to the local authorities comment,

Do you remember British rail telling us they had the wrong kind of snow, lol

31 Oct, 2008

British Rail also suffers from the "wrong kind of leaves" on the line....

Certianly keeps life interestin tho'',

Icould not beleive my eyes when i saw the news last night, at first i thought it was snow, glad you are ok, like TT if any thing like that happened up here, i would be saving my cat before anything.

We'll enlist Islander to help you. He's got some spare wood from where his fence blew down.
He'll bring his dog, Lassie.
Anyone else want to jump on board ? :o)

Saw on news last night so strange never scene anything like it before.

Very nasty stuff comes out of the sky.

Is there room for me with my stash of yarn to crochet cosy hats and yolk warmers:)

Take care.

Scotkat ~
You are very welcome on the ark.
You can knit neck warmers for all the animals.

Could take a while to make the neck warmers for the two giraffes. Lol

You are so funny:)

Wasn't Grenville building an ark on a blog a few months back? I wonder if he has completed it yet

31 Oct, 2008

I checked Grenville's blogs.
Couldn't find a boat-building one ~
or was it that blog about a colour-themed ark ? :o)

It was back in the wet summer - maybe he put a comment on someone else's discussion

I would sack all the weather forecasters and replace them with new ones who would be under strict orders to only give us nice weather

Hear Hear, Islander

Islander ~
The next wall you build will withstand any weather that the forecasters decide to predict. :o)

Spoke to my brother on the phone last night. He still lives in Devon but he's in Tavistock on the west side of Dartmoor, well away from Ottery St Mary. OStM had FOUR inches of rain in TWO hours - makes Somerset look like a desert I think ;-)
