If you could only have just ONE clematis in the garden which one would it be? Just now we have several all out at the same time [which is unusual.]Clemeatis Montana Elizabeth, and Freda, also The Predident, Asao, and Comtesse de Bouchard.My favourite is The President, huge purple flowers held upright like water lilies.I always have room for more, so please tell me your favourites [and describe them] I would very much enjoy reading your views.

Thats a hard one, but for sheer performance I would have to choose Clematis 'Broughton Star'

I can narrow it down to 2. C. Montana 'Elizabeth' [my eldest girl is Elizabeth] and Clematis Victoria. [my second girl]. she is described as purple with a magenta bar. I have it growing through Rosa New Dawn and is just coming into flower now and it will go on right through to the hard frosts. some times gets a bit of mildew but I love it. There are photos of it in my pictures if you fancy trawling for them. :o)

thank you for replying, I will certainly look out for the ones I haven't heard of [which is all of them actually!]I feel as if I always want more with clematis plants, [I'm the same with suede handbags!]Clematis, roses and hydrangeas, the plants I always want more of!

There are are so many to choose from; but for impact, and volume of deep purple flowers, for me it has to be Jackmanii Superba; pruned hard to the ground each autumn; every spring it produces a mass of shoot up to cover an arch with a solid display of purple blooms: it is a bit late this year; I shall post some pics when it is in bloom.

I would choose Niobe. She has large, wine red flowers, with crinkled edges. She is simple to prune, (hard in late winter), a strong grower, never wilts, flowers all summer long, and very reliable. She also combines well with most other colours. freeas, I have over 80, so it's hard to choose, but yes, Niobe.
