Eastbourne ship "fire" - for Bik

During a series of comments on someone’s photo, Bik said he used to be a sailor, and I said that maybe he could explain something I’d seen at Eastbourne – a ship venting smoke, looking as though it were on fire. He asked for details as to the kind of ship, but I’ve only just found the photos.

I don’t know if the ship in the first pic is the same as the others – obviously, the smoke stopped me comapring outlines!

It did look rather dramatic – someone at the hotel said that ships “often” did this sort of thing but didn’t know why.

The first pic was one of a series of “general beach” pictures; the other two were the next day, when I looked out of the hotel window and saw what seemed to be a ship on fire, and dived for my camera.

You can see how much I zoomed in for the third picture by the size of the date

Thanks, Bik

Well, that's one way to sweep the chimney! Obviously, not knowing the type of ship, or of engine, or of fuel, we can't know for sure, but at least Bik gave several possible causes to explain it - now we can take our pick *s*
