Hubby went for a long bike ride today…(alright for some)…& on his travels he came across a barmaid…funny that, must’ve entered a public house! Not like him at all….:0).

She said ‘would you like some local knowledge?’ as he is writing a cycling blog & making maps etc etc. Well…he wondered what was coming but…

Apparently…there are only 2 green telephone boxes left in the country…I didn’t even know green ones existed… & they are both in Dorset. One in Okeford Fitzpaine (he was in the Royal Oak there) & the other in Ibberton, a small village a few miles from there. He should’ve taken a photo…

Have any of you heard of green boxes? Barmaid said it was something to do with Catholics….’tho what they have to with ’phone boxes is beyond me…

It's great to be talking to you in Dublin Irish...bloomin' miles away! What's your weather throwing at you? Raining here...can you believe it?!

31 Jul, 2009

ah Fluff was a miserable day here. pitch dark at 9 this evening , hard to believe its the summer

31 Jul, 2009

I know...I have to put the light on in the morning again & light the fire in the evening!

31 Jul, 2009

i love a lit fire but no till the winter lol

31 Jul, 2009

Well we wouldn't normally but it gets so chilly...the living room faces north & we get cheap wood so it's better than putting a heater on. When we have a barby we light the fire early & then when it gets chilly outside they all come in & toasty by the fire! Even in summer!

Going to bed now Irish...been up since 5! Night night & sweet dreams.x

31 Jul, 2009

cant beat an open fire tho can you, even just the look of it is lovely.

Hhmmm....green telephone boxes, eh? There are definitely more than two in the country...there's the two you mention in Dorset, then another one in Barningham, Suffolk, one in Maidenhead, Berkshire, and another in Yattendon, one in West Dean, East Sussex, one in Fangdale Beck, Yorkshire.....no shortgage! That's one for each day of the week!

But why green??? I don't know. Irish/Eire post boxes are green, but their telephone boxes were traditionally cream with a green trim.

Maybe they were for the use of visiting leprechauns?

;-)

I've heard of green ones but never seen one. I don't know why they were green. I find it fascinating .

1 Aug, 2009

Looking forward to seeing the photo. We have a public phone at the end of my lane. I think its just boaring red. Might nip down their tonight and paint it pink LOL

1 Aug, 2009

ok well, sad person that i am i googled British telephone boxes lol.
was said that they were painted red so they could be easily seen but no reason so far as to why some were green

1 Aug, 2009

He's still cursing the fact he that didn't take a pic so I'll post it as soon as he does!

Thanks for the info about the others Bscott...I thought there would be more somewhere. Most people round here are pleased if they've still got a red one, instead of those boring grey things they replaced them with... never mind a green one!

1 Aug, 2009

i dont think phone boxes will be around for much longer, most folk have mobile phones now. i know a lot of our here have already gone

1 Aug, 2009

Yes you're probably right Irish...what a shame. Our village has lost the shop, school & garage but still has a red box tho' I never see anyone using it. You can buy them now to put in your garden!

1 Aug, 2009

aye ive seen ad's for them alright.
thats awful that your village has lost all those .

same everywhere tho isnt it

1 Aug, 2009

'Fraid it is...the little school I went to closed a month before my son was due to start there over 25 years ago now. The shop closed last year but we suspect the owners ran it into the ground & then lost the post office that went with it so that in time they can sell up & make a tidy profit. The garage was started by my grandfather, taken over by my father, then when he had a bad car crash my elder brother took it on.

He sadly died of cancer a year ago & so the garage has now been closed down as his widow couldn't keep it up & running in the present financial climate.
It's so sad to see the empty workshops etc where I grew up & learned to ride a bike with my Daddy around the old petrol pumps! I think it's going to be redeveloped into small business units.
End of an era for my family & the village...

1 Aug, 2009

aww that is sad , but least you have those happy memories

1 Aug, 2009

Yes I have plenty of those.

1 Aug, 2009

Hi Fluff what a sad tale, but perhaps I can point you in the right direction concerning the green 'phone boxes. I remember reading somewhere that the phone boxes on one of our islands were painted green. I'm not sure but I think it might have been Gernsey or Jersey. Watch this some one will come on and say " oh yes they are green on ........"
Just my luck :~))

2 Aug, 2009

Don't know what's occurring with the green boxes Ian but I thought it was Ireland where they were painted green!
I've googled it too & found another one in Portisham but no explanation as to why.
Maybe they are from outer space, put down years ago to act as a space portal for an alien race to infiltrate our species. That might account for Gordon Brown...
