Today Michael would have been 27 years old … maybe married or still living at home … quite likely the latter knowing him!!

He loved his home comforts, home cooking & a mother for an alarm clock!
Listening to music was his favourite hobby … especially 80s stuff which he came to love thru’ his stepfather … & modern bands like Coldplay, Snow Patrol & Keane but also picked out golden oldies such as Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone & Bob Marley.

He was classed as average at school … always the one left stood there when the others had scarpered from the scene of the ‘crime’ but never in trouble for it as his teachers knew he was just a big softy.

He worked hard making dining candles in the same factory as me & would often fall asleep while I drove home. Funny how a 6 foot grown man can look just like your little boy again when snoozing in the passenger seat!

Here’s just a few photos up thru’ the years so you can get to know him too … from a sweet little boy on his first days at school & his first sports day to a gangly youth in charge of the barbecue to a more confident young man in Greece.

A friend of Michael’s gave us a card a few weeks after he left us as she thought the words spoke volumes … I love their childish simplicity & they always make me feel better … I thought you’d like to read them too …

When somebody dies, a cloud turns into an angel & flies up to tell the others to put another flower on a pillow.
A bird gives the message back to the world & sings a silent prayer that makes the rain cry.
People disappear but they never really go away.
The spirits up there put the sun to bed, wake up the grass & spin the earth in dizzy circles.
Sometimes you can see them dancing in a cloud during the daytime when they’re supposed to be sleeping.
They paint the rainbows & also the sunsets & make waves splash & tug at the tide.
They toss shooting stars & listen to wishes & when they sing wind songs they whisper to us …
’Don’t miss me too much …the view up here is lovely & I’m doing just fine.’

Thank you for sharing this special day with me … here’s to all those we’ve loved & lost … old & young … let’s keep their memories alive. xx

What a handsome lad.
I'm saddened for ur loss. I've lost so many in my life. Some I love and miss so much. I've never been a mother so I don't know exactly what a mother feels when she loses a child, but I do understand losing a loved one. I can only say it's the hardest part of life. It would be great if we could all avoid it, for it's a heart wrenching life altering experience! My heart goes out to u and I hope u have many treasured memories to get u through this life until u meet again.
Hugs to u.

Can't imagine what it must be like to lose a child, but I have lost some very dear people and my OH. I feel for you today and will be thinking of you. He looks a lovely chap. But as my old dad used to say ' Keep your chin up' and look at the good things. God Bless.

You don't expect to lose a child Fluff. He looks relaxed and happy in his grown up photo. I do feel for you to lose all that potential fun and joy to be his mum far into the future. Keep smiling on and sharing your joys and sorrows.

Michael was a lovely boy/man and I can just imagine how hard is has been for you to have lost him. None of us can ever understand why our loved ones are loaned to us for a period - sometimes short sometimes longer - but one thing no-one can ever take from us is memories. It's lovely that you can share this day with us all and I know Michael is enjoying his birthday in heaven with all the angels! As a mother myself, my heart goes out to you. I pray that today is very special for you all. Those words in the card are amazing and absolutely beautiful - thank you for sharing them with us. God bless!

Fluff, I hope you don't mind, but I've gone back through your blogs to read about Michael as I was unaware of his passing. How very tragic to have lost your son so young, but the way you remember him, with Big Country, Ginsters Pasties has made me smile. As mother of 29 and 27 year olds, I just can't imagine how you must have felt. I'l be thinking of you and yours today. Michael is probably looking down at you, in your new shoes and saying 'Go for it, Mum ! ' x

It's good to remember and it's hard to forget....that about sums up what you will be feeling today, Fluff. Losing a child is the most unexpected and sad experience a parent (a mom) can live through. It is not the order of things usually when a child predeceases a parent.

I know you remember Michael every day but today I hope the light from your candle will brighten your day. Tears mingle with memories, I'm sure...and I send you comfort and heaps of understanding. (((hugs)))

I wish for you....strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow. x

Thank you so very much everyone ... for your kind & heartfelt comments ... I knew sharing his day with Goyers would be a comfort.

We have been out for the day or I would have answered each of you as you wrote ... flowers at the grave & roadside then onto Weymouth as I love to be by the sea.
There wasn't a cloud in the sky all day & it was so hot it felt like a summer's day instead of early October.
I know many of you have lost loved ones too whether it be children, partners, parents or siblings & so you know how it is ... my family are not the types to show remembrance with flowers or anything so I always want to make a fuss of my boy's special dates.

Thank you again ... you lot are the best. xxxx

I am pleased, Fluff, that your day was spent as you felt right....a cloudless day and lots of sunshine will be comforting to you...and being able to acknowledge this day by laying flowers. x

Hi Fluff,

Big hugs from Carol and I and a "big sloppy kiss" from Holly too.

I'm pleased you were able to lay flowers, I can't imagine how hard it is to deal with this kind of grief but I do know you will never be without him.

Love from Carol, Holly and me

~thanks Aster!~there is no good age to lose a child as you feel sacked from your full time job as carer as well as missing the son or daughter when they are very young ~in our case we were lucky to subsequently have a special daughter who has taken away a lot of the pain and provided so much joy for us~she did have to put up with a really cautious mum who worried like mad even though I tried hard to let her lead a normal carefree chldhood! ~ she turned out alright thank goodness!

An understandable reaction Arlene xx

6 Oct, 2010

Of course she did Arlene ... you would be a lovely mum if you had 10 children.

My brother & sister - in - law lost their baby daughter at about 15 weeks to cot death & subsequently had a little boy. He was spoilt rotten & led his mum a merry dance but grew up to be a lovely man who reminds me of Michael in many ways.

I'm sure you have happy memories of your little boy as do I ... they will never fade.xx
