RAFFLES.....

Hello to you all out there…
This isn’t really my usual type of blog, but as a few of you will know, I have been on GOY for the last 7 months, and have shared our gardening highs and lows, and sometimes our personal ones too….
Most of you, have met my rescue dog, Raffles, as he is my avatar on here, plus steals the limelight on my photos page on GOY.

On September 14th, I turned 49, and was told the same day that our wonderful Raff was diagnosed with cancer, after a lump he had had surgically removed, proved to contain malignant cancer cells…it was a devastating bombshell….and as my husband was away, it was thanks to my great friends on GOY, who helped support me through a really difficult week. You all know who you are…..

Raff came to us from our local Rescue Home. A four year old Jack Russell x Terrier, he was picked up as a stray, wandering the streets of Wales.

When we first saw him, he was a very frightened, trembling little lad, terrified in the Rescue Home’s noisy environment….
We took him for a walk and on our return, he put his paws on my lap…we were sold, we didn’t so much choose him, as he chose us…..

He settled in so well, though it took him six months to really learn to trust again.
He is cheeky, laid-back, and loves just about every other dog and human he meets…an absolute joy…so to be told that my little lad had cancer was devastating…..
There was no treatment the vet could offer, just time…..

Last week, we had to take Raff in for a check up to see how he was progressing.
Our vet had optimistic unexpected news…
Because his tumour was external, and easily accessible, she thinks that they may have caught all the cancer cells, as he has healed really well, and no further growths have yet appeared…..
She thinks that my little lad is cancer-free…..

Now we know there will always be a risk that it can come back, anyone of us that has lived with cancer, whether in ourselves, family, friends or in our beloved pets, know what it is to live in fear of the return of this dreadful condition, but I just wanted to offer up this blog as a way of saying ‘Thank You’, for being there when I needed your support, you all know who you are and what it meant to me…and that, if you are reading this and going through it too, then I want to offer you hope, that sometimes, just sometimes, we can beat the odds, and miracles can occur.
Don’t ever give up and think that it can’t happen, because, at least for one little adorable life-loving canine, it has…

I will keep you updated on his progress…….

Oh San, I never meant to upset you, but it has been why I have been a bit quiet on GOY over the last few weeks....I hope that my blog comes over with something positive in it's message.
I lost my Bearded Collie through this too, plus my mum and a good friend....so like you, it has touched us deeply. I pray that your brother will be ok, and anything he may have, responds to treatment quickly...my heart truly goes out to you my dear friend. Please keep me updated...(H.U.G) from me back to you xxx

Pleased and relieved to hear the good news Flori....Cancer is a horrible disease and touches most of us at some time in our lives..I've lost a sister and good friend to it..I'll admit I'm not "soppy" about dogs, but I do like them and your little chap is a real character. Hope he lives long and prospers!!...An excellent blog btw!!

Hi Flori, I am so glad that things are looking positive for Raff now and that his future is looking much brighter. I lost both my parents to cancer and my wife lost both of her parents too with the same disease.

I can imagine what you must have been going through my good friend, it must have been so difficult for you over the past couple of months. To have the initial news on your birthday must have hit you so hard.
I am really pleased that after all this things are looking so rosy again for you, and for Raff.
Take care Flori and a hug from me :-))<hug> x...Rich

Flori that is good news, I lost my Malik just over a year ago, at the time, many people on here helped me so I know what you mean. Raffles looks lovely in your pics, hopefully many more to come.
Sending a belly tickle via you,xx.

Thank you Richard, and you too, L/lass, and A/Alice it is lovely to hear from you all. It is scary to think how many people and animals are touched by this dreadful disease, the statistics are, 1 in every 3 would know someone who had been touched by this shadow. The day they eventually find a cure will be great indeed....
Was a little dubious of posting this, as felt that I could be tempting fate, but there are so many good people out there that were my rock, and supported me so much whilst I was dealing with this, that I wanted to say a very public 'Thank You' from the heart, and let you know how my little lad is doing now.....XXX

It is wonderful to learn that Raffles is on the mend, Flori. It is a huge worry when pets are diagnosed with serious illness and I'm sure with the care of your vet and all the love and attention you give to Raffles, he will be bounding about for a long time yet. You've had a rough time.

You will be feeling so relieved at his improvement. Bless.

oohhh Flori-- what a relief!, big hugs allround friendsyou both deserve them....
I've just been reading everyone elses stories about this horrible disease, my Dad, mum-in-law, uncle , the list goes on but there is some good news when a friend survives breast cancer and other friends-- like San-- fit & well after theirs, they are understanding more all the time so I truly hope all is well for Raffi, for Sans brother and others xxx

We miss them as much as they give us which is why we miss them so much. I hope Raffles goes on giving for many years to come.

Muddy!!!! I haven't caught up with you in an age, you have made my day by popping in and saying 'Hello'...I hope all well with you, and you are keeping your secateurs sharp for all that Autumn pruning! A joy to hear from you my friend, and thank you from the heart for your supportive comment, and saying 'Hi'.......
Is 'Elvis' still living in your Greenhouse and has his own Galaxy supplier now...?Hahaha \0/ xxx

31 Oct, 2010

Oh Flori, how I've missed the humour and banter of this wonderful place during my absence - I do occasionally catch site of Elvis (or Son of Elvis), but I'm not inclined to share my chocolate with him ! :-)

2 Nov, 2010

Muddy, it is great to have you back with us, we had such a giggle over galaxy pinching Elvis didn't we? I am loving the fact that you have popped in to say hello, I have pm'd you my friend...
Glad to hear that 'Elvis, has NOT left the building', but you are being awful tight on that chocolate.....go on...give him a nibble....lol!

2 Nov, 2010

Oh can I have a nibble too?

3 Nov, 2010

I'm sorry Richard, I don't think you'd fit into my humane trap . . . . (unless I left the 'e' out and made it a HUMAN trap . . . . mwha ha ha ha (evil laugh)). :-))

3 Nov, 2010

I think I had better give that particular nibble a miss Muddy and go and see what other nibbles are on offer....lol ;-))

3 Nov, 2010

Richard, you should be so lucky! lol......Muddy's galaxy very precious to him, he did a great thing sacrificing a chunk to that pesky little rodent, no man has made a greater sacrifice
for a mouse....Professor Muddy, are you still workin' in that Lab? Human traps indeed!......LOL!

3 Nov, 2010

So Flori it looks as though nibbling is out of the question for the time being. Would munching be out of the question also?
I'm feeling like a munch,
Must go and get some lunch.
There's nowt here in the house,
Been eaten by the mouse!
........lol ;-)))
