Chickens!!

Hello, we are lucky to have gorgeous chickens in our back garden and were finding it difficult to find other members who have chooks. I though it would be good to have a section where we can share pics and info about the lovely feathered ones….. and help each other out with problems and advice and top tips!

we have 5 ex-battery hens, one blue haze (and 3 indian runner ducks) sadly we lost one ex-batt, Tallulah, over the winter. It was just like she got tired and gave up. We will hopefully soon get some pics on here not only to show off our gorgeous girls, but to show you how they looked when they arrived in June 2009. There is nothing quite like a fresh egg from your own chooks and as you feed them, you know what they’re made of :)

I hope to meet lots of other chicken fans on here! Their poop is lovely manure so they are good for the garden too!!

We don't have any chickens, wouldn't want to risk it as we have a pair of regular fox visitors, but have a friend who does and have to agree nothing better than fresh eggs.
Well done giving those poor ex-battery hens homes, remember seeing pictures of some on another website I go on poor things were such a state, with hardly any feathers, but in just a few months they look wonderful, opened my eyes, only buy free range eggs now :-)

genuisscuffy - we live in housing assoc house. We did email to ask permission and we aressured them that we wouldnt be getting a cockerel, so there would be no noisey disturbances! Also if you're worried about your neighbours, you can let them know they can have yummy fresh eggs at a cower price than the supermarkets and any fellow gardening neighbours can have a share of chicken manure! Neighbours, family and friends payment for the eggs, is great to go towards their food, equipment etc :) Ask, and you never know... fingers crossed....

Simbad, they do break your heart, but so good to see them become real chickens right before your eyes!! :)
