Just an observation here?
While looking at front and back gardens for Goypeadia it struck me how much more we photograph of our back gardens compared to our fronts. Any ideas why this might be?

Do you think it could be because people don't really want to identify where they live to be seen by anyone. In these days of fear of crime, maybe we may be telling people in a blog that we're off on holiday, and someone who shouldn't be looking may see and identify the empty house. Similarly, people are wary of publishing photos of their children or grandchildren.
Shame we have to think in this way drc, but I think that's the way it is.

I have put some on of my front garden and didn't really think about what Mad said,I'm worried now. I agree about not putting on pics of your children.
My main reason has been looking a plonker in front of your neighbours when you get your camera out,no one sees me in the back garden (-:

Well, my garden wraps round the house on three sides, so I just take photos wherever....I know I'm lucky, though.

So have I Annella, and I wasn't really bothered, but I did try to avoid showing the actual house. The Internet can be a dodgy place, unfortunately mis-used by some people. It is also a good place, as this site is. Still we can't be naive in these days, unfortunately.

I agree Mad

My front garden is at the back, and my back garden is at the front.....though my side garden is actually at the side......

I use my back garden more than my front so maybe thats why 4 me Drc? I like to keep my front garden simple 2 as its also a drive :)

Back gardens are usually much larger than front gardens and so have more in them. Also, back gardens are more private so we spend more time there. Our front garden is generally quite untidy because we don't see it all that often.

i think i take the same number front and back. i just dont show the car or the actual front of the house. I even try to avoid the neighbours houses too.

Interesting ideas but had'nt thought of your explanation SBG perhaps thats it?

If I lived in my lod cottage still, I would photograph the front because it was beautiful. Yet smaller than the back so not as much there.
In this house my front consists of a 3 foot wide area of slabs - boring and drab and will be changed next year ( hopefully ) - THEN watch out for photos :o)

and there arent any of me or hubby. mind since i am holding the camera thats hardly surprising. also my work associates would have a field day with that. very few of the girls but a few well chosen ones.
i guess i do like my privacy too.

That sounds like you've thrown down the gauntlet, Hywel...a challenge to yourself! We will all be waiting for those photos now!

;-)

=^..^= for Blodyn!

Like a few others...I spend more time in the back garden...its more private...I sometimes forget about the front.even though we have re-vamped it recently...more reason to forget about it next year I suppose....apart from planting it out....lol

Now I apologize in advance to anyone who falls into this category, which I am sure you wont.....we have been gardening for over 30 years all over the country, some small, some large, and wherever we lived all the front gardens were diabolical, but, not the back, it was as if it didnt matter, so when we started making a new front garden, most of the neighbours decided to do theirs as well, and where we live now there are very few pretty gardens, most are awful, luckily my immediate neighbours are very proud of their gardens, thank goodness.
Many years ago Gay Search came to the same conclusion and she did a tv program and bought out 2 books on front gardens, anyone remember this ?

Blodyn sais PPrrrrrrr Brenda :o)

Ah yes...I do remember now yu mention it!!...I know that since we did our front garden....next door was shamed into doing something....including cutting his own grass (OH used to do his as well as ours)

25 Nov, 2009

When and I do mean WHEN the new front porch is up (the latest is that the firm making the windows etc. produced the wrong door!). Mr MB & I will work more on the front area, but it is only a few feet wide and part of gets very little sun... we've tried various ideas and still not come up with a good solution! Hence his comment that 'it is generally quite untidy because we don't see it often'! The one side of the garden where the car port etc is also looks messy right now as until new porch is done all sorts of 'stuff' is sitting there. I have no problem of showing pix of front, once sorted and new porch...

25 Nov, 2009

Like everyone else I spend most of my time in the back garden .As I live right next to a main road sitting out the front is so noisy .

25 Nov, 2009

SBG I'm the same as you, I try not to take direct pics of the front of my house or my neighbours while i hide to take the ones I want behind my bushes so my neighbours see (-:

25 Nov, 2009

This was fascinating, while front gardens are the first things visitors see it seems its out back gardens that get the most attention/use for all sorts of reasons? Must confess I hate the neighbours to see me taking photos in the front garden.

25 Nov, 2009

I think its because secretly a back garden is more private only seen by your self and no one else unless you invite them in. Front gardens on a whole every one sees not private. Also yes you have to be careful like Mad said, on the net, especially stating when you are going away, giving photos of the front of your house, etc.

25 Nov, 2009

A lot of the comments are mentioning the privacy in the back garden. I know that over the past few months of planning, in my head, my new garden, it is the back that I am planning not the front.

25 Nov, 2009

My front 'garden' (called yard here) has limited gardening spae...mostly if is a driveway and parking! I have shown the new entrance to the property...way back. =^..^=

26 Nov, 2009

'Front gardens' don't exist in mountain pueblos here. In fact our house is unusual in that its land is attached to it. Most people here have odd little plots of land dotted over a wide area with ancient histororical ownership. However, I have noticed over the past few years that, with large areas of new-build houses, a small area of private land is attached to the front of the properties so maybe front gardens will be a thing of the future here?

26 Nov, 2009

Thats interesting Nariz if our gardens are not big enough we can hire an 'allottment' which is a small area for growing vegitables (mostly), and this can be some distance from the house. But mostly we tend to have a plot with the house within it so giving us a front and usually bigger back garden.

26 Nov, 2009

My back and front garden are almost the same size. When my two dogs were young they almost completely destroyed my old back garden (virtually no front garden then) so when I moved I did the back garden but really thought about the front as it was going to be just for me while the back was for tortoises, dogs, grandchildren etc.

The back garden has evolved as the dogs and children have grown up but the front garden has stayed almost the same. Even when I had a car I refused to give up any of the garden for parking! My neighbours are used to me popping out in the garden with my camera (I was out the front this morning catching a rainbow!) so that doesn't bother me. I sit in the back garden, reading but, although there is a seat in the front garden, I only use it to rest between jobs :)

I don't worry too much about my property being identified as a target via the web as I think you are more likely to be burgled etc by someone 'on the spot' so to speak and I'm too much of an introvert to want to put my own photo on GoY so you are all safe from that :)

Gee I always say if they can find anything worth having they are welcome to it........

26 Nov, 2009

26 Nov, 2009

but Holly, hwen you stan/walk in your frnt garden,i a, sure it is very nice indeed

26 Nov, 2009

Thank you derekf............i have a small lawn a shrub hedge and some pots with winter flowers in and bulbs.......we get a lot of cats in the front and they poo over your lawn and plants... so i dont plant a lot out there........

28 Nov, 2009

I dont have a front garden, just a lawn that's maintained by the council, & we're not allowed to fence them off, as it disturbs the 'flow' of the grass cutters!

7 Dec, 2009

At least you dont have to mow it. Can you have pots and hanging baskets if you want them?

7 Dec, 2009

Yes, but they keep spraying everything with weedkiller! Last time I caught them at it, I was ready to make the guy drink it! :~((
Killed off all my climbers! And 3 rose bushes that my dad gave me (I saved one out of four).

7 Dec, 2009

Thats so awful.

7 Dec, 2009

I wasnt very pleased! Neither were the other neighbours who had plants out! There's no need for them to come to our doors, I think!
The only thing that's still there is the Solanum that was there when I moved in!!

7 Dec, 2009

Just dont care do they.

7 Dec, 2009

Nope! The council pay them, & they wander around like zombies in their protective clothing, spraying everything! I dont believe in using weedkiller anyway!
