On the News today the Millenium seed bank has now stored 10% of the worlds seeds and by 2020 it hopes to hold 25% but are suffering from lack of funding. What a shame if we loose even more plants because of poor funding.

Yes Dcr it would, the allotment people if they have good crops they let a couple go to seed , knowing they will produce good plants for the following years planting, so I do the same with some of my flowering plants.

It is down to us Dcr to fund this endeavour Mr MCB & I are supporters of and feel good knowing our cash is helping to keep the world's seeds alive.

Good thinking on the part of the creator of the seed bank as we will need that reserve to fall back on the way they keep doing so called improvements

I agree Pipsqueak, we are going to start saving seed from some of our vegetables as of next year.

Don't blame you Mg. Many people grow the heritage varieties. They may be susceptible to various pests and diseases but without different strains there is the potential for another potato famine. I know it sounds extreme but when blight hit the irish potatos they had nothing to fall back on

i spent a week at the millenium seed back in 2000 as part of a work based bursary. It was absolutly fascinating and I would love to work there full time. I got to use my botanical skills that tend to stagnate at work sadly.
its in the grounds of Wakehurst Place near Ardingley. I was there in the February and the Skimmia scent was heavenly.

it is open to the public too.

I live in East Sussex so Wakehurst Place not far SBG lovely place for walks. I dont suppose jobs come up that often as I should think people tend to stay if they get one?
