I knew that cutting back some plants too harshly can kill them, but never really thought it could be so dramatic!
This lovely Cytisus ‘Racemosus’ was planted in 2011 and flowered this spring but I thought the frosts would damage it so cut it right back, thinking it would regrow – only to kill it.

What a shame Drc it was so pretty, I rather suspect that is what happened to mine - over enthusiastic strimmer - not me :o(

It is Neelan it had such promise!

Oh what a shame :o( It was a lovely shrub.
Some plants don't like being cut back into old wood. I think Lavender is the same.
I hope other people with this shrub will take notice of this so that they don't do it to theirs.

Not always easy to assess how much to prune shrubs such as these ...

I hope so Hywel. Being a new young plant the year before, I thought it would take it TT.

There's the possibility that pruning was not the cause of its death ... so don't feel too guilty !

That's a shame,Denise..just yesterday,I did the same with a very large Choisya Sundance..It suffered frost damage on one side, and wasn't recovering at all well,,so have taken it all back to new growth quite low down, and OH had to saw some branches off, they were so thick...looks awful..but everytime I thought I had done enough, and kept viewing from all angles,it still didn't look right..so kept on going ! ..I now have a huge void,so been trying to find odd bits to plant in the bare soil...a good job I'm not a hairdresser,as I think they would sue me ! Lol.

Hi Sandra ...
short back and sides please ;o)

13 Jul, 2012

Lol,Terra..now that is very brave of you, considering you haven't seen the 'Model's' finished result ! ..Are you really sure ? :o)

13 Jul, 2012

Sanrda, maybe you could post of photo of your latest haircut attempt ... and then I can make a final decision ;o)

13 Jul, 2012

I might just do that,Terra..wouldn't want you to be too hasty ...I have a feeling you might want to retract your bold request ..I will let you exercise your right to a cooling off period ..Lol.

Awwww poor plant! is there no chance of it recovering drc?

13 Jul, 2012

What a shame, but i would have said when i cut it back, that it had two chances it can either live or die.

13 Jul, 2012

Oh Dear sorry for your loss, such a lovely plant too, ;0(

I had heard some brooms can be tricky, daren't touch mine but its very old and straggly but flowers well,. Such a shame for you

13 Jul, 2012

That's a shame Drc...I've yet to feel the 'pain' of pruning a shrub to death - but once my shrubs get bigger I'm sure I'll experience is :(
What are you putting in it's place?

13 Jul, 2012

It was so healthy, but no sign of any regrowth in over 3 months.

13 Jul, 2012

I can sympathasise with you Drc as I have done that to one I had about 12 years ago and have been very cautious with pruning the one in the garden now ,they are lovely plants though :o))

Yes I agree Niverdeen and I will get another one.

Pamg-yes i would agree about brooms being tricky looks wise but mine come back quickly. i have a yellow and pink one at each end of a corner bed and massacred them a little to let some light in as its a good space. the yellow one is more like a shape tree now with lots of old bare wood at the base that the secateurs wouldnt go through. i know itl be back with avengence! :o)
Drc-i dont like 'liking' sad stories :o(

I tend to think it was Leigh, it was so healthy and I just cut it right back and never saw any life again.

17 Jul, 2012

i got rid of mine because you can only cut from the tender wood Denise, so mine out grew its space and couldnt keep the shape either, so had to get it out, ok if you have a large space to let them grow.

21 Jul, 2012

Perhaps for the best then Sanbaz, as I didnt want it too big where it was.

21 Jul, 2012

yes i think so Denise :o)

21 Jul, 2012

Shame, it was so pretty.
