Thoughts on Morning Glory

Some weeks ago my neighbour gave me a minute pot of morning glory. I have never grown it before and neither had he. I put it in a pot at the foot of the main stem of the grape vine. Now it has gone up the support and into the grape vine. It has very pretty pinkish flowers. I was expecting that heavenly blue. The colouring is very subtle with paler lines. Yesterday was a glorious day. There were 10 flowers. By about 4pm they started to pucker up into a luscious deep lip smacking pink. I thought what a shame to last such a short time. I grow Day lillies, so I ought not to be so dismayed. Somehow day Lillies are more muscular and have a less delicate presence in the border. So I took some photos as a momento of their ephemeral glory. Now I look at the photos the flower does not come over as pink as it looks to the eye. I arranged the expiring flowers, as I thought the pink colour was so marvellous. This time the camera recorded what I thought I saw. I have just paused to watch an electonic birthday card for for my husband (79 on 9th). Two teddy bears. One on piano and the other on violin, play happy birthday- the wonder of modern electronics. So glad it is here while we are here. Those of us who love gardening can share our thoughts about our plants.

Lovely flowers. I was very interested in this blog as I have grown Morning Glory from seed this year and it has grown very well but no flowers and no sign of any! I was just about to post a photo and ask why? They even look good 'puckered up' :)

Me too Gee19...no sign of flowers on mine either. I've been told to be patient & they will arrive but I'm thinking it's getting colder at nights etc so they might not come at all!

Lovely pics DMJ...what a perfect flower...well jealous!

Gorgeous! I'm jealous too...mine are still in bud, and at this rate with no sun, that's how they'll stay :(

From dmj. we have just come back form a long weekend with friends to celebrate my hubs 79th. My morning glory leaves had all shrivelled up. Quick rescue from the filled up water butt ( must have rained a bit), as I nearly emptied it, watering and fertilising the camellias before we left to go away. Thank goodness it made a very speedy recovery My neighbours plants are not blooming all that well either. My plant faces north east and most of the flowers face that way too and some blossoms mixed in with the grape-vine. My plant is more or less sheltered under a verandah canopy. Not deliberate just serendipity. thanks to you all for your kind comments.

Mine only started flowering in the last few days, I love them because once they start growing, them seem to grow about 3 inches a day. I grew mine from seeds which a neighbour gave me last year, and my own seeds this year

From dmj.still blooming really well .About 20 flowers this morning. Some flowers in amongst the grapes, which are now turning black.

My thoughts on "Morning Glory?" Well...they can be tempremental, need sowing at the right time (not too early, the baby seedlings need lots of light)....once germinated, just forget about them and let them do their own thing! Once they get established, don't try and contain them...just let them twine around their neighbours. Then suddenly, one morning in August as you venture outside (in your dressing gown...) they will literally take your breath away!! Such a beautiful colour, and almost ethereal in their beauty....enjoy them, and appreciate them, for they don't last long....

I have just started to unpick the morning glory from were it has twined around anything it touches. It gave up the ghost during hot, dry weather, when I wasn't up to speed with the watering can. ( water bill today same as last time.On a meter,so no garden watering). All my butts were empty! I did not realise that this plant would be so vigorous in a smallish pot and need so much water. The guys next door are going to have fun with clearing their trellis. Getting 5 Morning Glories unravelled should be should be great fun. The only place I could have planted my little treasure would have been next to a great hunk of a Pinot Noir grape vine. The grapes have been very good this year. Good flavour. We are not wine makers. So they get gathered as the mood comes on to eat them, after that the starling have a go at them . MG Seeds galore by the way.

I have lots of seeds too. As mine are in pots, when should I collect the seeds and plant them?

I don't know a thing about Morning Glory. I wonder if it pops up itself, if in a suitable place. you could ask a question as answers usually come very promptly.

my neighbours' MGs are even now still flowering. They've given us a lot of pleasure as they are right outside our window/parking space.

Had a look yesterday, and some of the seed pods have gone brown and came away from stem easily, so have collected all the ones I can so far, will plant them in the spring, which is what I did this year, so hopefully they will grow again. Mine are still flowering too, look so pretty and cheerful, especially as everything else is dying back
