Final Phase!

The well in the middle of the lawn had been irritating me ever since I started work on the garden. It was, well, just so dominant and to my eyes not very attractive. But what to do about it.

Wherever I was in the garden it was there! As you can see, I tried planting a few annuals round it during the summer. Yes it helped but….

This was my solution. (the grey patches are where I was treating the moss).

And I got a rose arch to boot!

Now I’m happy – for now – and looking forward to this season to see how it looks when it has filled out a bit. Just want a greenhouse now!

Your garden looks lovely, so neat, great idea to plant in the well and make a bed round it, the arbour really finishes it off , wonderful :-)

That's so much better with the well incorporated in a bed .. the arbour links the flowerbeds really well .. well done on the hard work. : o )

That looks a lot better digginfit, with the bed around it. have you thought of removing the top 2 layers of brick, it would look more like a planter than a well then, Your garden is gorgeous by the way and the Arch looks just perfect there..

Thanks for all the nice comments. We had thought about reducing it's hight Youngdaisyd, but unfortunately, apart from the brickwork, there is a whole load of structural ironwork actually within the well, so it's really difficult to do anything with it. I am going to try and constuct a better plant container around the top this year as I think that worked reasonably well. It does make quite a good birth bath too.

funny you should put this blog on ~ i just found some of last years photos when we had a very similar 'well' in the garden except that ours was not a proper one and we have knocked it down ~ i didnt mind it ~ i think its good to have some height
i love that arch that you have put up and joining your well and arch with a lovely flower bed has made a beautiful feature, well done you.

Nice landscaping and looks wonderful. I would stain/paint the rose arch an oriental red colour - from pics 5 & 6, I think the garden can take it and it would make lift the plantings, landscaping and complement the brickwork of your house, esp in Autumn and winter.

I love what you have done with your garden

Thanks Sticki. Thanks Donnah. Thanks Kildermorie. Actually we are having the house painted white in May so it won't be brick for much longer. And to be really honest, the idea of red terrifies me. We have just got rid of so much red inside the house (red bedrooms x2, red study, red dining room)...A good suggestion to stain it though.

Lovely! A well thought-out solution and it's made a lovely feature of the old well. Before I saw your final photos in this blog I thought "why not put pots on top of it?" But your solution is much better! Well done! :o)

Great idea digginfit! "Bury" it in plants - it just looked odd as it was sticking out of a flat lawn. Put similar sized plants around it and it becomes a stage for your changing display of "pretties" Super!

You've done a very good job in "hiding" it in plain view! :-)) The border is just perfect & the arch just sets it off very well! :-))

Thank you all for your kind comments. It was all hard work but I'm very pleased with the outcome.
