All the primroses came from one wild one in my Aunts garden in the Lake District. Some are also pink! The helebores self seed each year and I am getting a nice variety of colours.

I have about 10 magpies in and around the garden they are comical to watch. There does not seem to be any probs with the other birds. We have a variety of well fed birds visiting. The only bird that they do not get on with is a crow that comes down onto my shed each morning for its bread. If a magpie lands it gets a good peck so live and let live but keep feeding . I hang a fat ball on a hook on the inside of the bird table and a magpie sits for ages pecking at it, rather like a boxer on a punch bag !

Peter good luck with the ground elder. I have been didgging mine up for 6 years and am winning the battle there was only 2 patches last year in 1 area and so far this year no sign. It did grow all round the tree we took out so perhaps it went with the tree we might never know. x

Went a couple of years ago in July. The island beds were amazing, and it shows how big some grasses can grow. There is a lot to amuse as well as the gardens there are trains, if you like that sort of thing. I spent my day in the gardens and found it instructive. I also went to the nursery, the plants were reasonably priced but not all you see in the gardens are available. There was a water centre but I did not visit. Would say its worth the visit if your that way but not as varied as a day out at Barnsdale.

I agree with spritzhenry shop around but if you can afford the extra go for one with more headroom it makes more use of the sides. I saved money by getting plastic shelving off ebay to start with which helped the pennies good luck and enjoy.

As the others have said keep mixing and adding. I use a shredder indoors, and find that every now and then a couple of pages of newspaper shredded and mixed in helps to stop it getting sticky. With regards to rats and mice all our bins are on wire so that nothing gets in. I learnt the hard way my first year here when a family of rats moved in ! It was not very pleasant so now each bin has wire under. Good luck you will find it worth it once you start getting your compost out.

I agree its not a job that we could do ourselves. Its sad to see such a big tree go but I have put a horse chestnut in at the bottom of the garden so we should see that grow over the next few years. I now have a nice artea in which to plant a few shrubs that will see daylight!

Thanks Peter it is down ! Bit hairy at times but we had the right guys on the job. I intend to keep a few logs around the garden as a keepsake, plus they give a bit of height in certain places. Hope you enjoyed a day in the garden I dont think we will get many more this year.

High Mark not sure how much space you have in the garden but I have used one of those large sacks that sand is delivered in for a few years. I put a few fork holes in the bottom and throw all my garden waste, twiggy and soft mixed with a few leaves when they fall, not too much grass cuttings, water it when i remember don't cover it and just keep topping it up. It takes about two years to make really good compost but you do need to run it through a sieve to break down any woody bits. Its cheap and through the summer months I have grown courgettes on it. I have found it a great way to dispose of all garden waste except some weeds, hope this helps Pauline

So sorry we have had this plant for years, found an article on it which my mother has filed! Will keep looking as the name is on it. I dont water until it is very dry, it lives in the conservatory and this year we had three of the flowers will keep you posted if I find the article, must say it has been a talking point of several visitors. It seems to multiply from site shoots which you can root into another pot to grow a new plant or just keep potting on when pot bound.

On question - Please can someone help?

Am trying to get those that bloom in the evening as well. Have you tried Duncan Skene's nursery for you varieties his address for catalogue Abraxus Gardens, 7 Little Keyford Lane, Frome, Somerset, BA11 5BB. Phone 01373 472879 he may be cheaper.
