Trees 1

So here are a few photos of my trees, such a dull day so more pictures to follow another time.

One of my favourites, Eucalyptus niphophila (snow gum)

Corylus avellana ’Contorta

Betula utilis Jacquemontii

Taxodium distichum (swamp cypress), thrives in wet condtions

Acer griseum

Prunus serrula ’Princesse Sturdza. Should be a beauty when mature.

Acer palmatum Sango kaku (Senkaki). Now I have this labeled as Acer palmatum but with these vibrant red stems it has to be Sango kaku.

Betula utilis Jacquemontii Silver Shadow. Six of these planted on an open grassed area.

More to follow.

Yes Karen, I'm hoping for a tremendous coppery, shiny trunk :-)
You and I will still be on here Karen, I've been on here for 9 years already! Where have those years gone.

Wonderful Dawn . . . my favourite is the Acer griseum - hoping to get one of my own this Spring!

They are lovely Dawn. There's so much beauty to admire in the winter :)

Thanks Bathgate
Daylily, has your Silver Shadow been planted very long? I'm told it takes several years for the white bark to make a statement. Ours have been in around 3 years.
I agree Hywel.
Hi Seaburn, no I don't, I have in the past wiped any green off with a wet sponge, to be honest, I feel guilty peeling off the bark and not sure when is the best time of year to do it.

Absolutely adore trees! Yours are lovely, especially the Jacquemontii. We bought three of these as a Silver Wedding gift to ourselves, sadly two died, probably didn't like our solid clay soil, but one survived. so hopefully will be about long enough to see it mature a bit more!!
We also have a Corkscrew Hazel which a previous owner planted right next to the Mobile home in the garden and which has to be attacked vigorously to keep it in check.

Thanks honeysuckle. Shame you posterior your jacquemontii, probably they dried out too much, at least you have one left to enjoy.
I have an older hazel besides this one and it's forever sending up suckers, a real pain.

Beautiful blog Dawn we both love trees, have several unsuitable varieties in our small garden.......the Prunus Princess Sturdza I find interesting...John Massey from the well know Ashwood Garden Centre met the princess many years go in her fabulous garden, I did not know she had trees named after her..
I am looking forward to seeing your next blog, trees are so good for the planet......

You`ve got some beauties there Dawn, my favourite tree is the Silver Birch. I planted one in 2013 a `grayswood ghost` and it gets better each year. Your blog also bought to mind my fathers favourite poem.

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth`s sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

So thank you for your lovely blog and the memories it stirred in me.

Aaaww Stroller, thank you so much for sharing your Fathers poem, it’s lovely. I’m going to save it if that’s ok.
I’m fond of Birch too, you have a special one.
Dotty, fancy that about the Princess. I saw it growing at Bluebell Arbiretum and they got one for me, it is a very nice variety. I’m going to visit John Massey garden and nursery next year, off to google the history of the princess

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.

Dawn - that's a lovely plan. If you haven't been to Ashwood Nurseries and John's garden before, you will be bowled over! I'm hoping that we might go again this year too . . . I must find out his 'Open' days.

When we were there a few years ago, I stood admiring the rocky area round the lake, and the Head Gardener asked me if I knew why it was so attractive. He explained that it was because they had used just three different sizes of stone: so it was perfectly coherent.

Sheila, yes I'm looking forward to going and one of the open days is on my birthday in April so it's a good time to go. How good was that for you getting personal attention from the head gardener. Perfect.

Hi Dawn, planted my silver birch 2010, I've just looked through my photographs and it took about 4 years for the trunk to be fully white, it's really thickened out now it's lovely, I bought it from Ashwoods, I'm sure you'll love it there I'm only a couple of miles from there ?

2 Jan, 2018

Wow Daylily, it's good for you being so close to Ashwood's. I'm pleased you're enjoying your Betula, lovely trees, so in a couple of years mine should be developing nicely, thank you
