Bearing fruit

By davros

Pleased with the raspberries this year there’s loads of them and they are really scrumptious, dug up some first early potatoes ‘casablanca’ they look nice. Disappointed with the broad beans ‘Stereo’ they are absolutely festooned with black aphid,,there are ladybirds on them but I think they only eat about one aphid a day;I think I’ll just dig them in.

Great looking raspberries and spuds !
I am missing my raspberries this year.I used to get loads and pick them every day as I got out of my car on the drive. But , I've moved and doubt the new owners would bother picking the raspberries...they are too lazy to cut the grass and can't even be bothered to put their cars on the drive.........the garden looks a terrible mess, makes me a bit sad!!!

I feel for you Paul, I really do.
Davros I grew Casablanca last year and thought it was very good. Sorry about your black fly - did you forget to take the tips out of the beans when they started to flower?
My seed potatoes were given me this year by the man I get my veg from (grows them himself and brings them round the village in the boot of his car). Shot himself in the foot really as they've done very well and I shan't need to buy any of his for ages...

I learned from an allotment gardener. Always sow your
Broad Bean seeds the first week of December. Then they germinate late January and dont get cut off by the frosts.
They dont attract Black Fly if sown this way. I used to do it
but still pinched out the growing tips later on.
They need a very rich soil. The area needs manuring the
previous September.

I'm pleased to hear about your raspberries and potatoes :) They look nice and tasty ...
I'm sorry you're having aphid problems. Have you tried spraying them ?

Stera I pinched the tips off last year and it didn't seem to make any difference. Dianne,I will try the winter sowing next time. Hywel I don't like using sprays but someone recommended a soap spray which might be worth trying.

I don't like using them either, but I will in extreme cases. I don't find soapy water very good personally. You could try it though. It might work for you.
