Tulips...

My passion! My love!!! My total delight!!! I just LOVE TULIPS!! And although it’s not time to plant them just yet (plant too early and they might rot….) they are in the catalogues or a garden centre near you, right now!
Here’s just a few pics from last year…to get you in the mood…:)

There’s so many different colours and shapes…and they can give such a long period of flowering time…is it any wonder I’m in love with them?? Lol :))

Brilliant Di just brilliant. Such lovely vibrant colours and so upright too, such a shame when they are cut they droop so much, I tend to leave mine alone and not cut them.

Beautiful

26 Aug, 2009

Oh, they're definitely best left to be glorious in the garden, not unhappy in a vase!

Lovely photos. :-))

26 Aug, 2009

Thanks Bob and Michaella :) They are almost worth saying "goodbye" to summer for, and looking forward to spring...

As for "droop" Bob...well, I couldn't possibly comment...LOL

26 Aug, 2009

Thanks Spritz...and yes, I agree...leave them to be glorious in the garden :))

26 Aug, 2009

LMAO!!!
Lovely blog, Di!
The tulips are gorgeous! I LOVE the one at the end!!!
The statues're pretty special too!

26 Aug, 2009

Lol, thanks MP. The last one is "Queen of the Night" opening up in the sun .
Glad you like my statues :))

26 Aug, 2009

I LOVE the statues!
I have one in the house, but she's plaster so has to stay in!!

26 Aug, 2009

I'll look out for that Queen of the Night , its perfect!!

26 Aug, 2009

If I could only have one tulip in my garden, then it would be "Queen of the Night" MP....you've made an excellent choice!

Keep your plaster statue warm and dry in the house...mine are all weather beaten now, but I love them all :) I have several dotted around the garden, all female....one for each female in the family...me, my mum, my two sisters and my daughter. My mum is long gone, my sisters are at opposite ends of the country, my daughter's still close by...but in my garden we are all together again...does that sound mad? Hope not, lol

26 Aug, 2009

Sounds lovely to me! I dont have any sisters (4 brothers & sisters-in-law) & my mum died a long time ago, but I think that's a lovely thought! So who does the 20's "harem girl" represent?

26 Aug, 2009

Lol....she's one of the sisters, the other one (surrounded by the pink tulips) is my Mum...and I'm the naked one sat in the pond (sorry, no pic, lol)

26 Aug, 2009

LMAO!!
I like the white tulip too, btw, not that I dont like them all, ut the simpler ones seem nicer!

26 Aug, 2009

Me too, Di! Yours are gorgeous, what a nice collection you've built up.
Queen of the Night is a lovely, tall, slender being, isn't she, and dark and glossy as they come. I have a few, though I don't find them tough enough to survive up here for more than a few years ( I don't dig them up after flowering, they have to take their chances in the soil! )
Like you, Mad, I prefer the very simple, single tulips, and the bog-standard 'cottage' tulip lasts and lasts and lasts, so I tend to go for those. I love buying mixed bags of early and mid-season tulips and putting them in, not knowing what colour-combinations will come up...I've always had nice surprises that way!
I once had black ( QotN ) and white ones together in a bed, they looked nice, but a bit 'affected' so I didn't repeat the experiment. It might look good in a different, less cottagey garden than mine, though.

27 Aug, 2009

lovely tulips :) so it was your fault I want more tulips this year then LOL

27 Aug, 2009

Lovely :o) That's the best time of year !

27 Aug, 2009

hhhmmmmm.... I think you may just have converted me Di. I love daffodils but I've never been too fond of tulips.....up till now. I feel a trip down to the bulb section of the garden centre coming on!!

27 Aug, 2009

I mean the Tulips droop when cut Di !!!!!! ..... Really what are you like? :o))))

27 Aug, 2009

They all look brill.

27 Aug, 2009

I love tulips too! I won't be planting them untill late October after the zinnias die. I won't let myself think of Fall planting untill after Labor Day. September is my favorite month on the Jersey Shore. Can't give up on summer just yet.

27 Aug, 2009

You dont have to, Regina! In Scotland, it seems to have given up on us, we've had our week!!!

27 Aug, 2009

Lol...thanks for all your nice comments:)
Tulips are just so versatile....they look good in any style of garden, and like you Regina, mine won't get planted until at least October....maybe later. This year I even planted some as late as January (in pots, cos the ground was frozen), and they still flowered brilliantly! :)

27 Aug, 2009

Di! I just noticed you in the garden mirror!

27 Aug, 2009

Oh No!! Shock, Horror!! At least it's not a very clear pic, Lol :))

27 Aug, 2009

AH! But we have the technology................

27 Aug, 2009

Lol ....don't have nightmares MP :)))

27 Aug, 2009

LOL!!

27 Aug, 2009

Hello Di just reading your blog about Tulips (yours look lovely) I just bought some QotN bulbs today it says on pckt plant between now an Dec so would i be better waiting till end Oct,dont no anything bout them :~)))))

27 Aug, 2009

Lovely pics...reminded me I haven't ordered mine yet. I like Q0N and Angelique...I put them in pots in a sheltered part of the garden, else the wind will flatten them.

28 Aug, 2009

Hmmmmmm! My garden gets a LOT of wind, might have to put them in the corner, then!

28 Aug, 2009

Beautiful tulips and beautiful ladies Di !!

29 Aug, 2009

Thanks girls:)
Mobee, it's best to wait until Oct/ Nov to plant the tulip bulbs...they need the cold weather to root. At the moment the soil is too warm for them to put their roots down and you may still be "watering" your summer plants....and tulip bulbs hate to sit around in wet soil!
MP...try growing them in pots, like Alice says, then you can move them to a sheltered corner if the wind threatens to flatten them.

29 Aug, 2009

Good idea! Thanks!
I got some QoN bulbs in the pound shop yesterday!!

29 Aug, 2009

Lovely photos of lovely garden. This blog has almost got me wishing it was spring although I haven't given up on summer altogether (hoping for an indian one ) I must go to Wilkinsons :-)

30 Aug, 2009

Oooh glad you got some QoN bulbs MP...you'll love them! :)

Lol Bornagain...I'm hoping for a bit more summer too :) But when the weather gets really bad, it's looking forward to next spring that'll keep me going :)) I must go to Wilkos too...their bulbs are really good quality, and a good price :)

30 Aug, 2009

:~)))

30 Aug, 2009

But before the tulips, we've got the snowdrops, the crocuses, and the daffs to look forward too :)) I LOVE SPRING...and it's not that far away...once you get over "you-know- what" (begins with "C" and happens in December, lol,) spring is just around the corner! Get planting those early bulbs too MP ;)

30 Aug, 2009

What do you suggest? I DEFINITELY must have snowdrops! But I dont really know what else! I like white daffs but not keen on the screaming yellow ones!

30 Aug, 2009

Aww, that's a shame you don't like the screaming yellow ones! Have you tried the early daffs, like Tete a Tete or February gold...or Jack Snipe....they are so beautiful. I think I will have to blog again (sorry....) and try and get you to change your mind...LoL x

30 Aug, 2009

Ok, you do that!! I see them in big swathes in perth & it looks great, but they just seem too big & brash for a little garden!
I havent got ANY bulbs in the garden at all!

30 Aug, 2009

Madperth, DO NOT buy snowdrops as bulbs - they tend to shrivel up and don't do well. Be patient and either buy them in pots in flower, or buy them 'in the green' which means when they are still leafy. You can get them quite cheaply by mail order. They spread once they are established, so you don't need many to start with.

Look round your local GC and you'll find lots of pretty daffodils, not yellow if you don't like those - cream, or white or both! There are lots of different bulbs as well - take a look!! :-))

30 Aug, 2009

Ok, thanks Spritz!!
