Today, while I was fishing Duck Weed out of the pond, I fished out a baby Newt! How about that? I have beed patiently waiting and hoping for Frogs, but nature has gone one better and presented me with Newts! I am over the moon! Speaking of which, did you see the beautiful sliver of a moon tonight? Gorgeous.

It's wonderful to find nature in our gardens. Ponds really add another dimension to that.
Checked out my lilypond today and found a few froggies and also that my lilies are no longer weighted down. Will have to find a large stone to weight them again. The water looks so brackish that I don't care to fish around in it. A good warm rain will fix that...if we ever get one~
congrats on your new tenant!

I wonder how newts got into your pond? Where did it come from? Nature is amazing.

Oh well done. The PH level of your pond must be good. Yes, saw the moon, wasn't it beautiful?

Sadly, I found a dead next floating in my pond. I had no idea it was even there :-(. I have lots of frogs though, but for some reason their frogspawn didn't develop this year.

Newts eat frogspawn I think Lisa.

newts love frog spawn. baby newts [efts] were thought of as water dragons in the past. You can see why. also newts used to be called ewts. in English an ewt became a newt.
I wonder what species you have. it is very difficult to id them when efts.
We have a smooth newt in the garden and they happily walk over damp ground from mid summer to late autumn and rarely stay in the water. they hibernate in leaf litter etc in late autumn.

Thats interesting SBG. I hope I will see one or two in the garden soon :)

So you have the problem of duck weed, Karen? Ours was so bad the other day it stopped the waterfall pump working. Our daughter cleared it but today we noticed the weed is making a come back and the pump needs attention again. I do wish we could clear it.

We did have newts , lots of them, in the small pond we once had in the front garden. We found them when we were clearing the mud at the bottom. Lovely little creatures!

Oh yes Eirlys. I dont have a pump though. I just have to fish it out.

Yes, that's what we do but it is an on-going battle!

Always will be I think. Never mind, at least my algae hasnt been quite so bad this year. And we have had a lot of sunshine this month already!

I hope you get some more newts - they are lovely little things and very like baby dragons - bet it made your day. I am longing for newts - did find one once walking about in the garden on the other side of the house from the pond - a long way for little legs to walk...

Thanks Stera...I really hope so too. It did make my day. Hasn’t it been a great week though....so much sunshine. And next week Chelsea! I love May! The Royal Wedding today was beautiful in the sunshine. Im a half-hearted abolitionist myself, but couldn’t fault it as a spectacle...and a great excuse to pop a cork on the bottle of Prosecco left from Christmas! ;)

Younger Son dealt with the pond pump problem and found a dead newt inside causing the blockage. He said there were very many newts in the area which pleased us though I hope they stay out of the pump set-up, for their sakes!

Oh, that's sad Eirlys. And today we had a dead Deer on the verge on our road as well. So sad when wildlife gets in to trouble because of our technology. :(

I found a newt under a trough when I moved it to clear the leaves, I don't know which of us was the more shocked. There are no ponds near me only ditches.
It was velvety black on top & bright orange underneath, I've no idea what variety that would be but I haven't seen it again since that time.

Several have orange bellies. Did it have a sort of crest on top?

26 May, 2018

Stera, I only caught a glimpse & didn't want to drag the trough out any further for fear of hurting the newt but I don't believe it had a crest, it appeared quite smooth to me.
