A New Project!

Isn’t it a great feeling when you come up with a new idea? I have a very public feeling front garden as you know. Nobody much walks past, and cars can’t see in. But sometimes its nice to feel a real sense of seclusion.

There is one spot in my front garden which is potentially the perfect place for a meditative area. But unfortunately it has a big old apple tree in it with clematis growing up, and a smaller, new addition planted 2 years ago as well.

Its the area where the raised borders meet the hedge, just beside the large-ish dark red acer palmatum. It faces North East, so would be a lovely spot for a morning meditation. Here are the photos I took this morning after I had finished the wildflower strip tidy up.

So, out with the loppers, pruning saw and spade. And a short time later here is where we are now. First stage almost completed, just need to get Scott to chainsaw that old stump down to ground level for me. I might be able to dig it out, but will probably just give it a brush with stump killer and cover it up in the course of the new developments.

One young dwarf apple tree removed and replanted and the other old one cut right down as far as I could manage.

So…now I can go and do some thinking about how best to use this corner and what I want to do there…..to be continued…..

Oh, and for those who have been asking…. the area organiser for Angus (Scotland’s Open Gardens) has been in touch today, so we may still be on for opening up next year. I’ll keep you updated on that too.

Hi Karen, yes I love a new project, unfortunately I don't have much room left for something like this, {I suppose I could strip almost everything out and start again,} but I think I'm getting a bit too old for that now, much as I would love to, Derek.

Theres only one answer Derek...you'd need to move house! ;)

18 Sep, 2017

That would be "upsizing" for Derek then . . .

Perhaps Sheila. Have you moved yet?

Packers come today, Karen, and we move tomorrow . . . so chaos for the next few days :) x

I knew it wouldn't be long before you found another little space to work on! You thrive on a new project and I hope it all goes well.

You do remind me of how I used to be at your age......who doesn't love a new project? we have a couple on the go ATM
Will look forward to seeing the next stage Karen....

Looks like a shady corner. Woodland plants and hedgehog
winter houses ?

Im thinking a corner arbour, wood chips n the ground, and a few choice shade lovers. The Coral bark Acer can go at the side too...perhaps. A nice bit of sculpture erhaps. And some fairy lights.

Sounds good to me.....

Hi Karen, no chance of that happening, the last thing I want now is a mortgage, 😊 Derek.

Look forward to it's progression. I've got a really shady corner that I've got to sort out in my back garden. We have really struggled with what to do with it. Cheekily I hope I will get some ideas from your project :-). What you are planning sounds great. Hope to sort our corner next year as my next project starts last week in September. I am having a hedge taken out and some new trellis put up.

Some garden centres have sections for shade area.
Very helpful.

No new projects for me, I have enough with maintaining what I've got ..... so I'll watch yours develop instead.

can`t wait to see the end product Karen, almost finished mine a month ago then fell from the top of the pond over the rockery and fractured my right shoulder bone so now feeling very fed up and frustrated.

Oh poor you ! So painful.
My window cleaner fell off a ladder last August, broke his femur, and was not back at work until April. He looked really ill, but is fine now.

Oh goodness me....I hope you heal up fast Phyl, that's awful.

Glad to hear your window cleaner is ok Diane. Mine also broke a leg falling from a ladder and it was a total nightmare for him....serious bone infection undiagnosed for a long time. Thank goodness he is ok now. He no longer goes up ladders.

It's so easily done especially as we get older. I broke wrist one year & shoulder the next, both from slips - one on wet grass & t'other on ice.

Ouch! :(

I hibernate during January now as that's when both happened!

Good plan!
