Hospitalfield House

We have recently been treated to a four part history of Scottish Art on Telly. Presented by Lachlan Goudie, the BBC2 programmes followed the story of Scotlands visual creatives from pre-history up to contemporary artists. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06hbvzn
During the programme Lachlan made mention of an Arts Centre in Arbroath called Hospitalfield. I have driven past the end of the drive hundreds of times but never knew its significance, and in 28 years in Scotland I’ve never seen it.
Incredible. Lets say the notice at the end of drive is not exactly inviting.

Anyway, on a recent visit to my favourite nursery, I was given an invitation to the annual launch of ‘Scotlands Gardens’ (the equivalent of England’s Yellow Book Charity). And I hesitatingly agreed to go along (partly out of curiousity about the Arts Centre).

So, today I did a bit of ‘Googling’ and found out some amazing history about this beautiful building, its owners and its importance in the history of British Art. I also discovered a current fundraising initiative to improve the facilities, make the centre more open and accessible AND restore the gardens…including the Walled Garden! I think this is not a coincidence that I discovered this…..I’ll keep you posted! I’m planning to go on a guided tour as soon as I can manage, and the event for the Open Gardens is on April 15th!

Wow Kath! I've only seen the photos of the interior, but it looks amazing! I am really looking forward to visiting. I can't believe I was never told about ot before. Although I'm sure Linda did mention it to me once, but I had no idea of its importance in Art History. I suppose its because there arent any other artists in my circle of friends, apart from Linda.

Wow that's an amazing piece of architecture, love these buildings and you have so many special places around you. You will have loads of fun up there I am sure. Walled Garden, sigh........... eh that would suit me down to the ground, just to wander around in such an amazing place for a few hours - bet you do not want to come away once you have seen it inside. lol.

Lol Mum...which few hours would they be then? Between gardening, house-work and cooking, cricket, ducks, garden centres and baby-minding?! I guess you could always set the alarm for 4am!
