Talking of the weather....

….I found this very interesting site which has detailed descriptions of our (eternally fascinating) weather conditions going back in history. I actually found it reassuring to see that our weather has ALWAYS been odd and very changeable. It made me realise that what the media is winding us up in to a frenzy about might actually just be one of our usual ‘blips’. Take a look…it’s fun and interesting…..http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=winter-history;sess=

Hi Karen ... fascinating ...
in those earlier centuries the Thames froze over quite frequently !

Yes Terra, and you might have noticed that the author maintains that it still would be freezing over if they hadn't widened it to increase the volume of water. I discovered the website when watching 'Scrooge'. I was wondering whether the Victorian winters really were hard and snowy, and it seems they were. But we've had some corkers during my life too, especially 1963 when I was born. The gaps between hard winters are interesting too, as they must have been mild winters and there are plenty of them as well!

I remember a lot of snow in January 1985 ... it seemed to stay a long time ...

I don't remember anything except it was hot in 1976 and cold in 2010!....oh, and that 2015 was a dire summer! lol!

Yes, some of the photos in my recent Christmas blog came from 2010 ... heavy frost on everything !

Yes, it was a cold one Terra. I bet we don't get much winter this year....

Memories do play tricks so it's good to have an actual record.
My memories of Christmas' past mostly are of bright sunny days with the leafless branches of trees & hedgerows along the route on the way to visit relatives. This last one was no different.
'63 was a very tough winter where I lived at that time in Kent, actually Kent often seemed to get hit hard as in the winter of '66 too.
I think it was '85-6 when we had snow in June & the fruit farmers were worried to death as the blossom died on the trees hence bad year for them.
2010 was the year I saw icicles hanging from my cottage eaves which I hadn't seen since back in early teen years.
We need the cold temperatures to kill the bugs & of course vernalisation for our apples etc
This year will have to be the wettest I can remember.

We in the Uk are getting someone else's weather. Here in the French Alps it has not precipatated for 3 weeks and the temperatures are over zero. Not good for their winter tourist industry.

I was 11 in 1963and just remember all the fun we had....
I still think of 2010...it was the hoar frost on the trees and shrubs, glorious icy blue sky snd scary ice underfoot and lasted so long, wellbefore christmas and past new year

The next storm on its way tonight is Frank!.....

I looked at the forecast for the south coast, the midland and then scotland, its thesame 50/60 mph winds

Makes our island feel very small and insignificant........

I can remember the terrible freezing fogs in November '62 and the snow and ice that followed in '63, it was my first winter at work and the Welland froze over near the town bridge, people ice skating and going for a walk on the river, some lads even drove a car on it, very dangerous but exciting at the time, I cannot remember the river freezing over since, not in '69/70 or even in the 80's when the town was blocked off one weekend, also bad and the schools closed and some became accommodation centres for stranded motorists many of which were lorry drivers....Those were the days when I liked the snow as long as it didn't hang around for long and also that everyone could travel safely, nowadays I don't bounce if I fall over so its only good on a picture postcard, lol....
Forgot to say I have spotted the first snowdrop, hellebores and even violets flowering in the garden today...

I'm not surprised LL. I've been outside cleaning decking and pots to get rid of slimy algae and it was very spring like! Quite strange. The winds will arrive here during the night, but we are getting used to it now. We've had nothing but winds all year!

Always windy here, so nothing different, still mild and very wet, but we had a beautiful rainbow!

The long, hot Summer of '76 was the year I met Michael - how could I forget that year!

The Winter of 1963, when I was 10, found us playing out in the snow and coming in to thaw our fingers out in a warm towel. I have to say I prefer the warmer days! :o)

I was reading in one of my mags., that some plants, including crocus, need cold weather to induce flowering. I wonder if we will suffer for this very mild spell when it comes to February/March.....still, there's no sense in worrying....we can't change it!

29 Dec, 2015

That's vernalisation, Karen, many plants incl bulbs, seeds, top fruit & winter wheat need it to produce good heads of flowers, those are the years when we have bumper crops.

I remember the snow and ice very well when I was small, the snow was so deep and the icicles so big. Wonder if that memory is as correct as I recall it. 1963 the year of the ice ice and more ice. I have very fond memories of that, which you of course cannot recall. lol but we were ages and ages before we could get out and about because of all the snow and ICE. lol. and it snowed when your brother was born in 1967 - but not as cold. 2010 was by far the worst snowfall we have had and the coldest by a long way in recent memory. I would love to see some ice at the minute it would help the garden dry up its so wettttttttttttttttt and sogggggggggggggggggggy. Managing to get some of the borders cleared but very clogged up trainers. lol. Hooray as I type the sun is blinding me through the window pane. lol. Spring is only just around the corner, snowdrops are on their way. :O))))))))

Oh Mum....you are very optimistic! i'm afraid whats just around the corner for us is winter! But thats ok...I do like to enjoy 4 seasons!

'63 was definitely the year of the icicle, but '79/80 was also a very cold winter. This was the year when on boxing day our mobile was towed onto our plot & immediately sank up to the axles in mud - so this was where it stayed. Then came the snow & ice, I remember my ex digging trenches to join us onto the main sewer which was 8ft down, the top 2 ft was frozen solid.
Farmers came out with their tractors to clear roads & everyone had to walk down to the village for provisions, it was nice meeting folk you didn't normally see walking along the road. I had to go up to the farm with my 2 buckets to get water as our pipes were frozen.
Then later came the thaw along with the flood & we were back up to our ankles in mud.
