Sad, wet afternoon. Thank goodness for Empire Biscuits!

This morning we took Callum to the airport as he is off to Colorado for the summer again organising activities for young people in their summer break. They also have a special camp at the end of the summer for young people with serious burns. It is an incredible place in the Rocky mountains called Cheley Camp.

Anyway, I am feeling sad because I shall miss him. Thank goodness for Garden Centres with Cafes. On the way home we stopped at Kinross and I had a cup of tea and an Empire Biscuit, which is my favourite goody! At least it did give me a bit of sweetness for a few minutes.

So, I took some photos of the back garden from above to show you how smart a job I made of the deck refurb, and how the plants are beginning to fill out back there.

Note the tall Cardiocrinum giganteum just at the side of the de-commissioned bird feeding station. it’s getting so tall…soon it will be a metre high. I’m hoping it is going to flower this year! I’m so excited.

Here’s the fernery, only just starting to wake up. Fern fronds only just unfurling and Hostas just peeping through their mulch. Recently I’ve added Tellima grandiflora, the Mexican Orange Blossom in the centre and two different kinds of Asarum. I’ve also planted the white form of Centranthus right along the front of the hedge. They will flower this year, but next year they will be stunning.

This is the Cardiocrinum between the fern and the bird table. Linda gave me the young plant when she visited us at Glamis Castle a couple of years ago. They can take up to 7 years to flower, then die leaving off-sets. So I ‘should’ have more babies in the summer if it does flower and die. The flower stems themselves are up to 3m high and scented. It’s common name is Giant Himalayan Lily.

This is the deck after it’s recent paint job. It’s a good size really and in the future I will make more of it somehow.
It’s in shade all winter and has full sun in the afternoons in summer and part sun in the mornings. A great place for breakfast in the summer.

The hedge, which was cut to half it’s height last year, is beginning to recover, but it will take a few years. There are lots of buds lower down, so now it’s just a waiting game really. In the meantime, the honeysuckles with cover some of it’s nakedness, and I’ve planted some Ivies too. For their winter beauty and late pollen.

Thanks for reading my blog. :)

ps, just started to rain here, very dark and we do need the rain, well Pauls tatties do lol :O)

27 May, 2015

Well, everything here has certainly had a good drenching today. I prefer the rain to the wind though!

27 May, 2015

Me too!!

Your garden is really beginning to mature Karen - and your pictures are extra special taken at that angle - been a lovely day here although quite windy - we have been expecting the rain - I think that will be tonight hopefully clearing away before dog walking tomorrow - Happy Gardening - Jane

Thanks Jane :)

What a great view of that particular part of the garden Karen.
We were promised rain this afternoon, but as it transpired we only got a couple of showers, no good at all for the garden, or the watertubs.

27 May, 2015

Its just clearing here now. Thanks Julia!

A lovely view of your garden which really shows it off so well. You have achieved so much since arriving there.

I heard from our son in Troon how wet it has been today. They were meant to fly off on holiday to the south of France but when they woke up one of their twins was covered in spots.......chicken pox, caught from the other twin who had it 2 weeks ago! Such a shame. What timing!! That's little boys for you!

27 May, 2015

Oh No Wildrose! What a shame!! My two little horrors have both just had it. You couldn't put a pin between the spots and as Freya told me in whisper 'I've got them on my bits, Grandma' Lol!

27 May, 2015

It looks great, Karen - I love all the greens in the fern area. We've had cold wet weather here, too, although yesterday afternoon was nice. I hope Callum has a good time in Colorado. Is this his third time there?

27 May, 2015

Thats right Melchi! Well remembered, I am impressed! Thanks for your appreciation of my greens! ;)

Julia, you can tell Freya that I know exactly what thats like. She's lucky she's not 24!

Thank you Chris, I hope they get a holiday later. What a pity. Its a horrid illness. I had it at 24 and i felt terrible for a fortnight. Thankfully wee ones usually get better far quicker!

27 May, 2015

I too enjoy Empire Biscuits when I am 'north of the border!' Not so easy to find at home, which is maybe just as well!

27 May, 2015

My second favourite after a bit of date slice! You can keep your chocolate cake thanks, a bit of shortie or an oatie concoction gets my vote every time! Lol....I'm a bit strange that way!

28 May, 2015

Karen you have worked so hard and its lovely to see how its all coming together (I can hardly believe its less than two years since you started on it). You`ve made a good job of the decking a great space to chill out with morning coffee ... when we get the sun of course!. Ferns and hostas are on my` make more of` list this year. It will be interesting to see how the Cardiocrinum progresses so hope you keep us informed.
We are enjoying a day of sunshine and showers today - just what the garden ordered.

28 May, 2015

Thanks Phyl..I will. :)

28 May, 2015

Lovely to see your garden waking up, I have crossed fingers for a warmer june.....
i can only get empire biscuits when Igo to Galloway....oh and Abernethy biscuits.......I like those too☺

um well I like most biscuits really.......😢

28 May, 2015

So glad your Giant Lily is going to bloom this year. I have two that I think will flower . They are amazing!! We can put photos on GOY when they do. The bulbs appear quite late in the year. I admit to digging mine up a few times in the past. The weather here is pretty bad too so we are off to Greece on Sunday. :0)

28 May, 2015

Lol Pam! Woman after my own heart!

Linda! greece! Lucky, lucky you! Enjoy! :))

28 May, 2015

It looks at least a two biscuit morning here Karen, wet rain, the sort that comes straight down and soaks you through...
its my art group morning...pouring rain and watercolour painting don't go together very well 😨

29 May, 2015

Sorry to hear that Pam. Sunny intervals and the usual cold winds here.

29 May, 2015

Very soggy people trooping into the village hall furiously trying to keep their work dry!

gosh we were wet......
the suns out now but its a cold wind....
Haven't we had some cold winds this year!

29 May, 2015

Horrid winds Pam. And here we are high up with no shelter so we get the brunt of it. Still, cant complain about living here...just need the winds to drop a bit. :)

29 May, 2015

Spent this morning with Mum, who is only two miles away as the crow flies, but the wind...! We are very close to the front - only a mile - but where she is it is much windier. She was quite worried about some of her new plants. And it makes gardening so much more difficult. So I do sympathise. Is this going to be one of those non-existent summers, do you think? I do hope not!

29 May, 2015

There's always hope Melchi. I heard Carol Kirkwood say there is a change towards middle of next week this morning.....

29 May, 2015

Thats what I heard.....just hope its a good change, you never know these days πŸ˜•

29 May, 2015

I love everything about it Karen ! You are clever !
Your son will be home in no time at all ! You have your garden to keep you busy ! By the way...what are Empire biscuits !

29 May, 2015

Was waiting for someone to ask! Sometimes called 'Belgian Biscuits' here too. Two thin rounds of Shortie, jam in between to make a shortie sandwich, then nice white icing on top, and a glace cherry in the middle of the icing. Perfect for a sad day! :)) Thank you Rose x

29 May, 2015

Yum, yum! Give me a biscuit over a slice of cake any day. Love them all (but some are better than others!)

29 May, 2015

I have only ever seen them in Scotland.....notably at Castle Kennedy tearooms....all home made 😊

30 May, 2015

Well, when I visit Lincs. in July, I must take some down with me. You get them in Tescos and Sainsburys here...even m&S...but theirs are very poor.

30 May, 2015

Now, have any of you had a 'Fudge Doughnut' ?

30 May, 2015

No! It sounds sticky...and tempting! Have you had Rocky Road? I never have, but I associate it with Scotland.

30 May, 2015

Hmm...I have had Rocky Road, but it is usually disappointing. And I don't think of it as Scottish, but then I didnt know Empire Biscuits were Scottish. Now...a Fudge Doughnut is definitely Scottish, and is local to this part of Scotland. Its a large doughnut filled with creme patissiere and smothered with brown fudge flavoured icing. Now that is a really yummy cake!!!

30 May, 2015

Yes - that sounds pretty good. And totally decadent.

I think Rocky Road is not Scottish, but my daughter discovered it when she went to Glasgow, so that's probably why I associate it with Scotland. I actually have a recipe which is very similar. It's very good, but a little goes a long way!

30 May, 2015

Here there's a small bakery called Birds......their caramel doughnuts are so light and filled with fresh cream and coated with caramel icing....very similar to yours.....mmmmm

is it the chilly weather thats got us talking of yummy sweet things.....

30 May, 2015

Ha ha! No Pam..its the fact I'm on a diet. I've lost 21lbs and am totally obsessed with sweet things! Lol!

30 May, 2015

Oh well done 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

and just for a treat 🍩 🍰🍫🍬🍦.....all low calorie ...if you just look

keep up the good work xxx

30 May, 2015

:) thank you...still a long road ahead, but feeling fantastic. :))

30 May, 2015

You have done so well Karen, its sort of changing how you eat isn't it....I love chocolate and find a couple of big chocolate buttons or a piece of a bar instead of a pud after dinner are my sweet treat 🍫

well I do admit to being a chocaholic 😊

31 May, 2015

I love those miniature bars of Green and Blaćks. They are only 2 points each, so can have one every day if I want!

31 May, 2015

Are you doing the weight watchers thing?
I lost weight when I had to stop taking statins!
careful what I eat though but it does include a biscuit.......

31 May, 2015

Yes! Weightwatchers. I need the group support. :)

31 May, 2015

Good luck Karen, you're doing so well xxx

31 May, 2015

Thank you Pam!

31 May, 2015

Where are you going in Lincolnshire Karen ?

1 Jun, 2015

North Lincs. Rose. I have taken a little converted garage for a few days, very near to Mum. We could have a Lincs. Goyers get together!? i'm taking my car.

1 Jun, 2015

When are you going Karen?
you may need a sunhat and a brolly.....maybe as a sunshade....or windbreak!

as a child we always holidayed at Mablethorpe, with lots of cousins, such a safe beach to explore....happy memories ☺

1 Jun, 2015

Pam, I am going at the end of July. I'm hoping it won't be too hot. I am not used to English weather any more! Won't be going to the coast, just visiting family and friends. :) Yes, happy memories for me too. :)Mablethorpe and Skeggy too.

1 Jun, 2015

Funny weather these days, blowing here at the moment and showers yet by the weekend its supposed to be a heatwave!

1 Jun, 2015

Thanks Pam :) raining here as well now. The wind. Has changed direction though and not as cold as this mornings arctic blast. At least. Its a tiny step in the right direction. :) fingers crossed for Wednesday onwards eh?!

1 Jun, 2015

Have a look at Wildroses blog she just posted made me smile😊......

Its very windy here, thankfully from the west, the north/easterlys are worse for us, we're quite open to the elements that way....even the birds are not flying poor things x

1 Jun, 2015

1 Jun, 2015
