Today's Dramas

The day started off with me out in the field around us, waging war on Cleavers and Ground Elder with my Glyphosphate gun. All was well with the world, lovely sunshine and bees buzzing gently.

Then this afternoon a neighbour came along the road, very distressed to say that his dog (Yellow Lab like ours) was missing from the garden. I am concerned it may have been stolen. There was a car pulled up outside us a week or so ago and I was in the greenhouse so they didn’t see me, but they came over and peered in our garden. Then got in the car and drove off. We will need to be extra vigilant. Thank goodness we have the gates.

Then….there was another (yes, they happen fairly frequently) car accident on our road involving three vehicles and one ended up in the field. That farmer must be so fed up with cars in his field! Our road is crazy because motorists use it as an alternative route to the dual carriageway which has a 40mph speed limit and runs parallel about a mile away. Our tiny country road is 60mph and only 40 in the village..and even that is too fast as cars park on the side after a sharp bend. There’s no sense to speed restrictions these days. I keep thinking I should get up a petition, it’s like Brands Hatch here at certain times of day.

Anyway, I’ve had a great day in the garden. Weeds shot, Melons potted on, lawn watered, pots moved, greenhouse tidied and all the Heucheras, Roses and Clematis fed with Growmore. Phew! :))

Here’s a couple of photos of the back garden…don’t look at the grass…it’s absolutely dreadful. I’m back to reseeding it again :(

The lovely planter Scott made has allowed the Viburnum to grow so much..I can now hardly see the Oil Tank behind at all..very pleased!

Did your neighbour find their lab? I do hope so, the problem is Pedigree dogs are so expensive now, and just ripe for stealing, you will need to keep a look out K...
Sorry to hear about the problems with traffic, what a pain!

Your back garden is looking good, and I love the planter, perfect for hiding that oil tank...

I havent heard any more about the missing dog, but it does make you think about getting security cameras. Some people do such evil things. :(((

Hi Karen, I've given this a like because it acts as a warning to be vigilant, [also I like your garden], Derek

Glad you have had a productive day, but sorry to hear about the lab. And as for some peoples' driving on country roads!!! We have had a whole raft of 20mph restrictions put on roads here. Most very welcome, but a couple - including one of the main approaches into the town - are ludicrous. And none of the bus timetables have altered, so what does that tell you? If the 30mph restrictions were enforced, most of the 20s would be unnecessary. I suppose all the new signage is a cheaper way to keep the traffic to 30mph. Rant over πŸ˜‰

Thanks Derek. Yes, we do need to be vigilant. My neighbour said hid dog never leaves the garden, and I fear that may have been the problem..dog often sitting in front garden unattended. I think I'll get a padlock for the dog run. It wouldnt stop anyone as they could climb in, but the more barriers there are, the better.

Melchi...i'm always ranting about our road. :)

The gates won't stop them Karen, there are always notices on the lost and found pages around here about dogs and cats going missing, Peterboro which is 12 miles from us its a daily occurrence and most dogs that go are pedigree and are stolen from the gardens, people have taken photo's of the suspect vehicles and put the numbers plates on facebook but its so easy to swap a number plate over, heartbreaking for the pet owners..

I know Lincslass. Nothing stops a determined thief. But at least they cant do it easily here. It would take some special effort and I never leave my dogs in the garden unattended. But if they wanted to, they could come in, smash the garage door down and take them from their crates. Theres no stopping a really determined thief. My brother had his G. Shepherd stolen from the garden in Lincs. and she turned up in a refuge three years later in Bournmouth. You can only do your best. :((

Steve, a lady in Dundee had her JRT taken from her car...TWICE! Two different dogs. Its rife everywhere sad to say.

22 Apr, 2015

I've added a like too Karen, but for your garden..I love the planter,Scott made..and the Viburnum is wonderful..it looks so right there..but so sad for the poor lady who lost her dog..what a worrying time..and for you too, having to feel you need to be on your guard all the time.....and don't get me started on speeding drivers ! ..

22 Apr, 2015

Thanks Bloomer. It is a bit of a worry.

There is another reported tonight, two German Shepherds been taken from a garden in a village not far away, both neutered and micro-chipped so one can only hope but that doesn't seem to make any difference...
Oh yes Karen the planter and garden both looking good and you are right if you hadn't said I wouldn't have noticed the tank at all...

What a dramatic day Karen, hope the lady finds her dog but I doubt it, but its good that you managed to put it all to one side and get so many gardening jobs done. The Viburnum is doing a great job at hiding the oil tanker, I think its one of my favourite shrubs its such a good performer.

Cctv and a notice saying such, alarms on the doors and windows that screech loudly......
we have one on the barn door after the bike was stolen....
even alarm the gates if nessesary, theres a lot of security stuff out there, it awful havng to turn your home into fort knox .....

we are a 'rat run' too A46 toA6.....its 7.30 am and itsa racetrack out there, we have a bend just above us and one further down, that one especially catches motor bikes....tuesday night is 'bike night' and so dog walkers, horse riders or joggers avoid it! And we hope the racers avoid the hawthorn hedge.....
it worries me that the early morning horse riders .....they ride before work.....won't be seen on the blind bends......

your gardens really looking good and testament to all your hard work

the fields look lush and i'm sure with a bit of TLC the lawn soon will too.

This is a useful link for dogs lost and found ...

http://www.doglost.co.uk/

Thieves will steal mixed breed dogs as well as Pedigrees ... because both can be held to ransom, and there are the horrors of pedigree dogs and crossbreeds being stolen to be used as bait ... by those criminals involved in dog-fighting.

When I first saw where you were, I thought it was going to be so quiet there...no traffic ! I would have been worried too, when those people were looking in to your garden !
I pressed "like" because as usual everything looks good. I love the planter and I'm sure the grass will grow eventually!

23 Apr, 2015

The roads are crazy around here too and I always worry about the dogs - your garden is looking good - there is so much to do in the garden now - my neighbour has just presented me with 6 tomato plants - eek !! I shall now go out and prepare a suitable spot in the greenhouse to grow them on - happy gardening - Jane

crazy drivers everywhere we were approaching traffic lights which were on red when we saw this car just drive straight through them they had been on red for some time too. stupid idiots they are the ones that never come to harm too, they hurt the careful drivers.

23 Apr, 2015

One overtook me on the left at the village island , i was turning right, so i let him go ahead ....and caught him up at the lights over the weak bridge.....and smiled into his mirror.....
it happens so many times that the speedsters end up queueing, fingers drumming on the wheel.....they nver learn until its too lateπŸ˜•

A46 Pam...that rings a bell, that must be one of the Lincs. roads! Ah, yes....I've sussed it! We will certainly have to rethink our security here. We do have an alarm, but tbh its only a deterrent, as none of the 'neighbours' can hear it! Once the small trees in the Golden Border are more mature it will hide us a bit from view. As it is, you can only see us on foot or from a tall vehicle. I think CCTV is a good idea and locking the gates shut when I'm in on my own. Funny thing is...the Lab. was supposed to be a security measure! Lol! One good thing...she barked yesterday when the neighbour came to ask about his dog. First time I've ever heard her bark!

Rose, it is quiet most of the day, but its the commuter traffic taking a shortcut that causes all the trouble. We also have a lot of heavy vehicles going past en route to the quarry on the hill behind us. There is a massive redevelopment of Dundee City centre, and a lot of the rubble goes up there to be crushed. They also keep all the gritters up there, so always lorries going by. Ut they are ok as they move slowly!

Jane, hope your toms. Grow well! Feed them with Maxicrop until they start fruiting, as its excellent for the roots and leaves, then tomato feed. :)

I think the A46 goes to Newarke.....not sure, i certainly find bits of it very useful, it sort of misses the city.

over the years we have had a few accidents along the road here.....all of it i would say caused by careless driving and going too fast

the alarms on shed doors etc are very loud, i think they would wake you, certainly start the dogs barking.....
we have our own lights outside, and some inside thst come on as it gets dark and go off in the day, you can see all round the bungalow and peer out but no one sees you......

hope you are able to sort something are the police aware, community ones shoul help i think xxx

What a sad state of affairs!

23 Apr, 2015

What a day Karen. I do like your planter. Let us know if your neighbour finds his dog.

23 Apr, 2015

Love your garden photos Karen, great planter! Sorry to hear about your neighbours dog. I've heard of various rackets going on around the country, gangs "stealing dogs to order". ........ Some people shouldn't be allowed on this planet!

The doggy is back!!!! I don't know any more than that, but she is back home! :)) I saw three deer in the field behind us tonight, so am now wondering if she had decided to take off after them....could be.
