Wildlife Pond Part 3

Yesterday I drove over to Perth to get Pond Liner and Underlay. We had already lined the pond with builder’s sand.

Rachel helped me lift the liner and anchor everything down before we sat on the edge and sang songs (Abba mostly) as we watched the pond fill up. We did also compose a little ditty about a happy Frog coming to live in the Happy Frog shaped pond. Crazy? us?

Then, after waiting to see if there would be any sinkage etc. overnight (should really leave a few days), OH and I went to the local quarry to get boulders and pebbles for finishing off. Then I trimmed and tucked the liner, leaving a few inches extra just incase, and covered the edges with the rocks.

Then I found a few ornamental things to place….the Thai Lady, Clive the Dragon, my two metal Frogs…and of course, the Fairy Door.

Less than 24 hours after we filled the pond, there are already a couple of water beetles in there! Next…plants!

You've done a beautiful job there Karen - it looks really lovely :)

Thanks both! I am ver pleased with it, and using a flexible liner was so much easier than a ridgid one.

This is speed gardening Karen!!

I am reading all your blogs backwards lol a great job, well done, it looks just amazing, think of all the fantastic plants you will be able to buy!! cannot believe just the two of you put the liner in place, they are really heavy!!

don't let the dogs jump in they will puncture the liner with their claws, we had one of those and it was forever letting water out and the only thing we could think that was causing the problem was the dogs jumping in. we have a rigid one and have had it for years now. just thought I ought to warn you. lol

Yes, I had thought of that Mum. Willow has her own plastic bath in the garden. Neither of them seem interested in the pond yet. Too busy chasing balls!

That's brilliant Karen, I love it!

Not crazy its happy time and I like your choice of songs, can't beat a bit of Abba when gardening, I like different tempo's for different jobs, Manuel of the Mountains is my favourite potting on music, War of the Worlds is my choice if and when its too hot for gardening so I am relaxing on my lounger, it got played twice last summer, now that might be considered crazy but I actually find it very therapeutic....
Karen the pond is smashing, I love it, enjoy choosing the plants...

Thanks Lincslass! Sometimes I leave Radio 3 on in the greenhouse for the plants to enjoy! Did you see GW last night? They visited the National collection of water Iris. I had no idea there are so many lovely ones. I ordered three beauties for my pond online. Will be popping back to Perth soon.miserable weather here today, a day for catching up on the ironing!

Not noticeably Rose! But when you're not looking they definitely dance! ;)

I have yellow and blue iris in my ponds, a word of warning though they get very happy and spread rapidly, you perhaps already know that..I missed GW so will have a look on iplayer, what would we do without it......

Rose being a fully fledged gardener I suspect you chat to your plants as well, I admit I do, lol, give the seedlings a stroke as well, apparently it helps to strengthens the stems, I think thats a little gem from Mr T many years ago...

That's good news LL as up here everything grows slower, and you know how impatient I am! Let me see if I can remember which ones I ordered....

1 x Iris Virginica Shrevii

1 x Iris Pseudacorus Holden's Child

1 x Iris Louisiana Black Gamecock

Funny you should mention the ironing today Karen . . . I did mine this morning and said to OH "When do people who live in a country when it never rains do their ironing?!"

11 Apr, 2015

Love the pond, will look fantastic when you've got it all planted, and I love the frogs!

11 Apr, 2015

Ha ha Sheila..spot on! Sadly I've not even got the energy to Iron today! I'm scunnered!

Thanks Sewingkilla! You're right, it's crying out for plants now. Next week.....

My goodness Karen, you and the OH have been working hard! It's all looking great. I do hope you get some frogs. Will you put any fish in there?

11 Apr, 2015

No, no fish JUlia...well, not from me. Perhaps nature will bless us. But there are too many herons and Ducks and the like around here as we live very close to a fishery.

Hi Karen, you have really done well, what a good weeks work, looks great, Derek.

11 Apr, 2015

Thanks Derek. We could be waiting a while for the grass seed to germinate. It's turned very cold here.

Very inspiring bit of design and digging, can't wait to see what you are going to do with it plantingwise, and those seats...where will you put your glass or coffeecup though??
I will put it in favs for reference as I have a pond brewing here...

Love the shape, K......just loved the Iris collection on GW last night too.

11 Apr, 2015

Good point Resi...I may have to alter the shape to fashion a drink platform!! ;)) glad you like it so far. I shall be heading off for plants this week. Lots of oxygenators and a few pretty things.

12 Apr, 2015

Thanks JUlia...those Iris were lovely weren't they. I do love Iris! All forms.

Respect, Karen! It looks fantastic in such a short time (I shouldn't be surprised, having followed your exploits for a while!). What enjoyment you'll get from it 😊
