Long live gardening TV!

Have you all been watching a lot of telly of late? I have. I’ve been recording…..Best British Back Gardens, The Great British Gardening Revival….and best of all….‘Show me Your Garden’. The last one has been pure joy! People who garden are just gems aren’t they? Generous, funny, eccentric…..very entertaining and equally inspiring. I’ve had more ideas from watching these shows than I’ve had for a good long while. And they have also inspired me to visit more open gardens. I’ve bought my little yellow book, and soon I shall be venturing forth. fingask Castle, Rait, Perthshire -Sunday 8th February!

Mind you, I did have to stop watching the allotment competition.

It was the Lilies that did it for me. Having to grow Lilies for competition on ONE day…..crikey….and hardly any of them managed it…no wonder. If ever there was a programme designed to ‘put you off’ gardening and allotments…this is it. It’s just too hard and makes everything seem too hard….that’s just my opinion of course, and I hope others have enjoyed it. :)

Hi Karen I agree with you totally about Show Me Your Garden, really enjoying that its fab, I enjoyed Alans best gardens aswell. I would like to visit the Fourseasons garden which is not far from me, I have never been there, and the other garden that was in Walsall too. I am enjoying the allotment challenge aswell but know what you mean. Your starting early visiting a garden in February wow, but I seem to have more enthusiasm each year and so looking forward to getting in the garden soon, Jane :))

Yes JAne...they must have loads of snowdrops! I do love a good snowdrop walk! And I don't think Fingask is open to the public, so it will be fascinating!

I grew slowly into allotment gardening. Did it for 40 years.
Then became partially disabled then had to downsize all I had learned to manage 7 raised beds on a clay soil. It can be done. Must remember to keep notes as reminders.
Have asked for just 3 pole this year which is as much as I can manage as need a walking stick to balance safely.
Can clear ground with my Azada as it acts in the same way.
Just miss seeing all the other gardeners on the allotment field. And the momentum in an elderly life.

But Katen Fncask is not. Good road for the car we tryed to go last year and when we saw the state of the road gave up.

Not worth damaging the car.

Hi Diane! You must have such a wealth of knowledge and experience. I bet the other allotmenteers come to you for tips and advice? I am dedicating the area around my greenhouse for food production in raised beds and pots. I'm very excited about starting this year, and glad I have raised beds, even though I am fit and strong. It makes everything so much easier! :) I love the idea of growing with other people though, and it's a pity we don't have a lot more allotments for all those on waiting lists.

I totally agree,Karen - gardening programmes and other gardeners are so inspiring.

I'm with you all the way Karen, I also love to watch the 'gardening' programs over the winter...or any other time for that matter. It's only when I mutter 'Mmm, that looks a good idea' that my OH groans because it usually means I'm going to rope him in to try something new in the garden lol!

Lol JUlia...exactly the same here! :))

I'm a avid watcher of the gardening programmes. I can't wait for Beechgrove to start again. We get it days later than you up there. I prefer it to Gardeners World. We are wanting to visit Hodsock Priary near Worksop as it is very near to us, to see the snowdrops and Helebores but with all this snow we are having we wouldn't be able to find them...lol

Loved AT's Best Back Gardens . . . such inspiration! We're not too far from Anglesey Abbey (NT), so went earlier this week, and am going again with a group in Feb: wonderful snowdrops, Sarcococca, Viburnums, and of course the bright, white trunks of jacquemontii :)

Have written that down to look up in RHS Plant and Tree encyclopaedia.

I would love to go to Anglesey Abbey Sheila and Diane. I've seen it many times in photos and there's something very magical about a great winter garden. :)

Yes Karen we have watched and enjoyed them all, will be so sorry when they all finish.........even the allotment challenge, we found that an absolute hoot, especially the chutney and preserves, Thane Prince her face is a picture, even Fern Britton has a job to keep her face straight when she is tasting!!
Good luck on the 8th I do hope you make it there and back, will look forward to the photos.

I watched Alan in his programme, but unfortunately haven't got Skye, Karen, so missed the other one ! I wish there were more programmes about gardening on !

We don't have Sky either Rose - obviously we're missing some treats :(

7 Feb, 2015

watched the last one on Sky this morning absolutely beautiful gardens in Scotland, especially the japanese part of the one lady's garden was stunning :))

7 Feb, 2015

I suspect that would have been my favourite too . . . if only I'd seen it, gnash! gnash!

8 Feb, 2015

I've put a couple of photos on for you sheila, see what you think :))

8 Feb, 2015

A friend told me about 'Show me your garden' at the weekend......I'm sure Derek and Jamie hide the remote on purpose!

10 Feb, 2015

Have I missed them all?

10 Feb, 2015

Annella there were 6 all together but the last one is on Sky2 tonight at 9 and there are some on the On Demand if you have that :))

10 Feb, 2015

I'm a great fan of show me your garden, some beautiful gardens and love how not one person was unfair or game playing like in lots of other competition type shows. Hope they make more series of it!

18 Feb, 2015

Wasn't it great? I agree....was very sad when it finished. The lady who won the Scottish one was so lovely, and her garden was incredible!

18 Feb, 2015

DD2...have to agree...her face is quite hilarious! I watched the last one or two in the end. I wanted the cockney girl to win, but the right person won in the end. :)
