Jewels of December

I know, I’m on my soap box again, but just incase anyone has been slacking on their garden promenades, hiding indoors and hugging a radiator… there’s still time to get out there before dark, and seek out your winter jewels! It really does help with the festive stress when you notice the snowdrops and crocus bulbs peeping up above the soggy soil. :)

Here are some of the lovelies I saw today. I was thrilled to find a lovely pure white Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger) which refused to stand still in the wind for it’s photo. You’ll have to believe me, It’s there.

And at the other end of the garden this lovely flower was tucked away in ‘Heuchera Corner’, and luckily, the wind dropped just enough….

Helleborus ‘Double Ellen Red’

And beside it, this picotee variety of single hellebore.

I’m not sure which var. of Pieris this one is. It has these lovely dark buds in great profusion. I inherited this lovely jewel…

The hanging pearls of Arbutus (Strawberry Tree)

Helleborus foetidus, a native of the UK just starting to flower. I planted three of these last year, and sadly this is the only survivor. I have no idea why the others failed. They rotted at the base….maybe slugs got em.

Seed head of Leucanthemum flower…

Sedum spurium ‘Voodoo’ still flowering…I was amazed to see this! Most of my sedums are brown dead heads waiting to be tidied up by now.

Gautheria…looking good enough to eat..but sadly inedible.

Coprosma ‘Evening Glow’

Rachel and I are off to the Caird Hall tonight for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Christmas Concert. Carols will be sung, and perhaps a mince pie or two to follow, with a glass of something mulled! Happy Christmas Everyone! :)

What a treat to see these beautiful plants in your garden at this time of year.
The colours are so rich and regal looking.
Just lovely!

Hi Karen, thank you, and the samme to you, and your family, don't have too much of the mulled stuff tonight :-).
Karen I think the Pieris might be. ' Dorothy Wyckoff', but it's only supposed to be frost hardy, Derek.

Nice blog. I've planted over 3 dozen new daffodils and tulips today; plus pruning and transplanting. I hope you enjoyed the concert.

:)) thanks everyone! We had a lovely time at the concert. There were loads of children, and a lot of audience participation and hilarity. It was great to see my daughter letting her hair down and jumping up and down with the orchestra! :)) a happy time!

That sounds great Karen. Not much in the way of jewels here but I did see a lot of flower buds just breaking through the ground on the earliest double white hellebore. Nothing on foetidyus, but it was moved in the autumn so probably sulking.
What an amazing Pieris that is - good thing it wasn't one Pof the things you got rid of!

Have a good Christmas and Hogmanay.

So glad you had a good time at the carol concert. We're off to our local church carol concert tomorrow night. There's always a brass band and the local primary school choir. It's the only time I put a foot inside a church, but the atmosphere is fantastic.
I consider myself suitably chastised, I've not been out in the garden for over a week. I've been waiting for a fine, crisp day but I think I'll be out of luck, so perhaps I should get togged up and get out there.
The Hellebore Double Ellen Red is super. I think I shall have to invest in a few Hellebores next year. Have a super Christmas and all the best for the New Yearxx :)

You're right there Stera! It's a lovely Pieris.

JUlia, it's blowing a gale here today! I love my hellebores. They usually flower March to May. But this year they are all flowering now except for one. Hopefully it will flower later!

You hung your laundry outside Kath?....it's so bitterly cold here, I think it would have frozen! Nasty Arctic wind...took me all my time to get dogs out for a walk!

Thanks Terra. :)
