October Roses

Most of my garden is drifting off to sleep now. There is still lots of colour because I like to plant for year round interest, so Heucheras, heathers, evergreens and winter pansies and some perennials are still bright and cheerful. But it is officially autumn today, and most of the summer flowers have gone.

However, some of my roses are still flowering and one or two are flowering better than ever.

For example, Fighting Temeraire, which only last week I threatened to remove altogether, has responded by putting on the best display since it was planted in the early summer…..

And Hommage A Barbara, which I bought initially for my Mum (who’se name is Barbara, not Olive – that’s her midddle name – ), but when I saw it flowering I knew I had to have one too! Anyway, it’s putting on a beautiful display for Mum’s birthday today!

There are one or two others that have put on a late display, and one or two with buds still to come as well.

‘Scented Garden’

‘Special Anniversary’…especially strong and beautiful perfume, which you really have to sniff every day before it’s gone for the winter!

‘Charlotte’

‘Simple Peach’

And finally, my absolute favourite…‘Chartreuse A Parme’ which has huge, beautifully perfumed flowers, stunning colour, great healthy glossy leaves and a very long flowering period. 10/10 for me!

I know it’ not unusual to have Roses blooming in October, but they are very special to me. Enjoy your Roses!! Now, back to the spring bulb planting…..:)

Beautiful all of them, really lovely to see so many at this time of year, mine about finished now, but have done really well (most of them) :O)

I am so looking forward to seeing how they will do next year, now they have got their roots down. What with all the spring bulb planting, there is an awful lot to look forward to in the garden. The apple trees are still a concern, but I will be out there with my fungus fighter spray as soon as the buds break in spring. I've planted a Green Gage this week, and ordered a Quince. There is a beautiful one in Edinburgh Botanic Gardens, so if I can give it the shelter of my house wall and a very large pot, I am hoping for Quince Jelly in a couple of years. They are very beautiful trees, the blossom is wonderful, and the scent of the quinces will perfume my patio! There are two more apples that I want to grow as well, but I have room....Discovery and Katy. They both do really well up here. I'll be hunting for them now and in the spring.

not seen Katy apple before but discovery is a good one to have. Lots of apples blowing off the Bramley tree with the wind down here, it is a nice morning but very blustery.

We've used up all the Bramleys now. Didn't have that many in the end. A lot dropped off in the june fall. I guess it was the dry summer. But at least that is one healthy apple tree!

Beautiful roses there Karen, and it looks like 'the Fighting Temeraire' is living up to its name!

A beautiful selection of roses and I have jotted down the names of my favourites as I love the scented ones in particular.

A lovely collection of roses, where would we be without them, we still have a few going and lots of buds on the other ones........though not for long with this wind.

Thanks all. The wind is getting fierce here. I've just been out and staked three more plants and reattached two standard roses to their stakes.

All very pretty Karen. I'm glad to hear that your scared Fighting Temeraire into improving. I might need to do the same with mine!
