Inspired by Chelsea....my pod planting.

Some people say Chelsea is all about money and celebrity, and goodness knows there is plenty of both! But I have been four times now and every time I have been inspired.

This year I was inspired to make something from an old pallet (my herb shelves for the BBQ corner), and I also took inspiration from the beautiful planting on the Stoke on Trent garden which was really jaw dropping.

Remember these?

Unforgettable! So, when the OH decided to splash on a Garden ‘Pod’ I seized the opportunity to have my own corner of Chelsea inspired planting. I have used dark leaved plants and plants that have deep dark rede/cerise flowers in the summer.

The quartz gravel really brings out the colours and makes the planting visible.

I have more pics of the planting, but my laptop has died half way through writing this, and all my photos are on there. :( so for now friends, this is all you’ll get to see of this bit.

Being in Scotland…6 months of winter…I’ve used a few evergreen plants for winter interest…Heucheras, phormium, sedge. The rest are mainly deciduous/herbaceous. Here’s the plant list for reference:-

Achillea ‘Red Velvet’
Actaea simplex ‘Brunette’
Anthriscus sylvestris ’Raven’s wing’
Aquiligia vulgaris ‘Ruby Port’
Aster lateriflorus ‘Lady in Black’
Astilbe arendsii ‘Fanal’
Centaurea ‘Jordy’
Heuchera ‘Frosted Violet’
Heuchera ‘Midnight Bayou’
Heuchera ‘Shanghai’
Heuchera ‘Sugar Berry’
Heuchera ‘Sugar Plum’
Iris chrysographes
Magnolia liliflora ‘Nigra’
Paeonia lactiflora ‘Karl Rosenfield’
Penstemon ‘Rich Ruby’
Phormium ’Platt’s Black’
Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’
Sedum ‘Xenox’
Sedum telephium ‘Purple Emperor’
Sedum (var unknown, low growing red flowers)
Uncinia rubra -red sedge.

Hi Karen, that all looks very nice, pity about the laptop.
Your weather sounds like ours, 6 months bad weather, and 6 months not so good :-) , Derek.

That looks very promising, Karen.

Sorry about the laptop. My PC is on its way out, and I have got a new laptop. I am having lots of fun (?) learning Windows 8.1 and Chrome. OH has bought me an iPad for my birthday (goody goody!) so between them both I am on a pretty steep learning curve. My goodness, they are AMAZING!

A great selection of plants, some of my favourites too, should look wonderful when they all get going...shame to hear the laptop has died a death, they are not known for their old bones lol

Its taking shape now Karen, it will look amazing just like the rest of the garden once it is all finished, looking forward to seeing lots more pictures once you can get them off your old laptop :O)

Thats a good selection, I do like your choices, its looking great already going to be smashing as they fill out Karen, shame about the laptop, doublecheck it isn't just having a hissyfit, one of mine died last November then decided to work again after I'd bought a flipping new one, can get lots of plants and shrubs for the price of a new laptop, lol....

Thanks Lincslass....it won't even start up, not even in safe mode. I think it's had it's day. It was my daughters old one...I think we are due a new one by now!

Hi Karen, mine did the same thing 2 years ago, just went off, and wouldn't do anything, I had bought a new charger about a year earlier, and I thought I would have to get a new laptop, I took it to currys, who had a look at it, and said it was kaput I asked them to try different charger, they did, and it came on again, the new charger had a broken wire, fortunately I had bought it from currys, and it was still under guarantee, so they replaced it, and everything was ok, it needs a new battery now, but still works on mains electricity, worth a try, Derek.

Hello Karen, Thats awful ! What happens to all your photos on the old lap top ? Have you lost everything ? I also keep family photos in mine. I would be gutted if I lost them !

25 Aug, 2014

Bit behind here Karen after taking a few days off, hope your laptop is sorted now. I love the colour scheme, dark foliage with deep pinks are one of my favourite combos :o)

26 Aug, 2014

I keep a hard drive back up Rose, so no, not lost too much, just the most recent photos.

26 Aug, 2014

Thanks Annie. Hope you are well. X

26 Aug, 2014

Back them up, Rose! Get a memory stick and put them on it - it's dead easy to do. When a hard drive gives up, you can lose everything.

26 Aug, 2014

I too have an external hard drive which has lots of room on it - use it just for photographs, I lost mine on my old computer so learned a valuable lesson. :O)

26 Aug, 2014

Me too, same lesson!

26 Aug, 2014

Moi aussi!

27 Aug, 2014

Thats ok then Karen . I often wonder what I would do if mine packed up though ! Apart from panic ! lol

Love this planting Karen ... I recall seeing a dark Anthriscus in a West Country garden a few years ago and was really struck by the rich colour. Will you keep the Sambucus quite short? I only ask as mine has grown to over 7ft. this year! Another dark leaved plant I love is a Dahlia with red flowers ... possibly one of the Bishop varieties? My Mum has three of them in her sunny front garden ... very pretty. :o)

Oh yes, as for computers, ours has been playing up for almost a week, seem gremlin-free now, which is why I'm on GoY 'catch-up' today!

Thanks Shirley! I actually bought Bishop of Llandaff for that very reason, but ended up planting it elsewhere as I felt it was too red. The Sambucus won't grow quite so fast up here, but I want it to grow to about the height of yours, and after that I shall prune it hard every year to keep it at that size. It's right at the back of the pod and it should give me the 'nestled in' effect I am hoping for. It's a beautiful plant isn't it. Hope you don't have any more techie issues. Our new one may have to go back as the mouse pointer seems to be freezing. You get what you pay for eh!? I did suggest we get a pricier one but that fell on deaf ears!

Wow is all I can say ! I was after an arbour seat but now I want a pod ! Looking forward to seeing pics of the planting in bloom next year, the colours are my favourites

Thank you Sarah! :))

Yes Karen, the red is a very crimson one isn't it? I bought our Sambucus after our visit to Dottydaisy's garden a couple of years ago, then planted it next to a 'Lemon & Lime' Privet, really striking next to one another.

Fingers crossed this computer seems to be behaving now .... :o)

Ah, that's good Shirley! I spent the whole day sweeping our driveway, so I'm absolutely cream crackered now! Molly had to have surgery AGAIN, as she had torn her cruciate ligament. I always do something very physical when I'm feeling anxious! She's sleeping here now, quite sorry for herself, but all mended. :)

2 Sep, 2014

Oh dear, poor Molly. How did she manage to do that? I saw a chap walking his black Labrador today ... poor dog looked very undignified with his 'lampshade collar' on!

2 Sep, 2014

We have no idea how Shirley, but we suspect she may have had her leg squished under a huge lolloping Labrador!

2 Sep, 2014

Hope she is feeling better today Karen, keep her quiet and give her a hug from me and Wally. :O)

3 Sep, 2014

Yes, she had a fine night on the landing outside our room, and she ate her breakfast and lunch, no problem. She's lying next to me right now looking mournful.
