Hot, hot, hot!

I’ve had to come inside, it’s just too hot to work out there today, and I was wilting with the plants.

One of the joys of having a larger garden is that I now have room to grow more herbaceous perennials. I’ve always loved Heleniums and Alstroemerias and Perennial Sunflowers and Echinaceas etc, but never really had room to include them AND have a successful all year round garden.

So, here are few pics of the raised central border contents as they are today.

One of the fields of winter oats on the other side of the road is being harvested today…..early harvest!

These views are of the fields behind us…now the hedge is down much lower we can see everything….lovely!

Has anyone ever seen a Helenium quite like this before? This will have to go….what a ‘non event’. I’m disappointed as these should have been yellow helenium.

This is much more of a success….a plant I’ve never been able to grow before and nearly didn’t bother trying…but I do love them so thought it worth one last try…Echinacea ‘Tangerine Dream’ and the flowers are huge and strong :)

And on a final positive note…one of the two old apples that I have been trying to bring back from Scab….the apples are swelling…and it’s lovely as I really didn’t think we’d get any this year.

Yes, purple apples! Does anyone have a clue of the variety?

Cooler day tomorrow….perhaps…..enjoy your weekend!

where I uesd to live, only got an hour's sun daily, if i were lucky, ane before that I lived on 7th floor. never thought I'd have too much sun and even an umbrella didn't do it. but NOT complaining - that's a sure cause of toreential rain!

H! Thanks everyone the green helenium is no longer in the border, so it won't be smiling now Stera! Finally got out there to get weeding at about 8pm when it had cooled down a bit. Thanks Waddy, I know, we are ruined! Still can't quite believe myself!

30 degrees in the back garden today. I can't remember the last time we had such a long spell like this. Some of the plants love it, and some wilt despite frequent watering. I am just thankful for a reliably shady patch for OH and me to inhabit! And for the remnants of a sea breeze!

Your border looks lovely, Karen - such hot colours!

25 Jul, 2014

Your border looks as hot as I feel had to come I from the garden myself yesterday far to hot looked in the mirror and I was bright red ! so sat and cooled down under my ceiling fan , your views over the fields are lovely could be mistaken for let me see somewhere like Tuscany really enjoying this weather but finding it difficult to sleep .

Very pretty pictures, lovely view, blinking hot everywhere I think. Not been out in it much too hot for me to do anything outside, took my coffee out and sat in the shade but the air is so horrible it makes my chest tighten up and so went back inside to get cooled off. Got some sewing done and some housework, doors open to create a draft through the house, it worked, cooled me down. Sewing in the dining room is the coolest room in the house until after t.time. when the sun gets round to it. Off to cricket today it will be hot hot hot in the tea room. Sammie having a day off on THE BEACH alright for some eh. lol.

Love that border nice to see your hot colours shining through. Hope the greenhouse is soon erected and you are busy in it planting up things. Although think it might just be a tad toooooooo hot to do anything in a greenhouse right now. :O)

They've promised us a cooler day today.....but its just as warm as yesterday so far. Beautiful morning. Greenhouse man will be here in 15 mins!!!!!! I must go out and get on with cleaning the patio....it's the pits ....a really horrible job...hands and knees stuff and so dirty, but the landscaper and him indoors think we need some fancy grouting powder in the cracks, so needs must. Hopefully I won't have to do it again.....EVER! There's an article in August GW...says men not good at any job that involveds getting on hands and knees.....it's true...they just won't do it! lol!

26 Jul, 2014

Don't you believe what you read in GW,Karen..a big stick beating them into submission,is always a winner :o) only joking..! Have you not got a pressure washer to clean the slabs with? surely, you are not going to do them in this heat..you will melt!
Love your Heleniums, except the non yellow one..good idea to get rid..horrible,isn't it, or wasn't it? :o)
I could never keep them going in my garden, why, I have no idea..maybe it was a follow on bitter winter..
Lovely Echinacea, and interesting Purple apples..not seen those before..and views to die for ,you lucky girl..I've had to come inside too,it's so hot..Breakfast outside was just about bearable..

Karen could that apple be Spartan, it is supposedly Crisp flesh with wine like flavour, prone to canker and picked in October. just had a look in my book at varieties and that is the nearest I have come up with, try google and see if it is that one. :O)

26 Jul, 2014

Good idea Mum, but I will wait until they are a bit more mature, then I'll get a better idea. :)

26 Jul, 2014

Bloomer, Scott did the side and back parts of the slabs with the power washer, and I finished the front by hand. My part is finished and looking very smart, whereas we now have to wait for the wet parts to dry, then sweep them clean, then weed kill them. So it's not that much quicker, and it makes a heck of a mess. My herb bed looks awful now. :( glad I didn't use that at my cottage garden border. Oh, and I did see himself on hands and knees for at least 5 mins! :)).

26 Jul, 2014

Karen, I have just read through the comments with a smile on face regarding the 'hands and knees' tasks! I went to Mums early (08.00) and got down on my knees to cut around the 'seven circles from hell' as I call the stepping stones in her lawn. Impossible to use edging shears so a pair of sturdy scissors did the job. Thank goodness I only do this occasionally! Keep hydrated in this heat too ... :o)

26 Jul, 2014

Lol! Thanks Shirley! I'm indoors, just waiting for finishing touches to go on greenhouse in the cool. Not long now...so exited!...can't wait to get my hands on it!

26 Jul, 2014

Wonderful! I can see it now, housework and cooking will be right down the bottom of the list for things to be done! Garden and greenhouse up there at the very top ... lol!

26 Jul, 2014

Just exactly the same as usual then!! :)) In fact, a friend from London is coming in a couple of weeks, and that's probably the only thing that's going to make me clean the house! ;)

26 Jul, 2014

Some of those jobs are hellish, Karen. When they have to be done, though... Still very hot and humid here, but daughter tells me it's raining in Glasgow, and I think we're probably going to have some before too long. The garden is gasping.

I've got stepping stones on my lawn, Shirley, and I use scissors too! Thank goodness I only have to do them once a year - I can never believe how much the grass has covered them.

26 Jul, 2014

Karen, I doubt your house ever looks really untidy!

Melchi ... my Dad set those in the lawn eons ago and I often wonder if he's looking down at me when I cut around them! No doubt laughing too ... :o)

26 Jul, 2014

;) no, it's never an absolute midden!

26 Jul, 2014

Great border you have planted up there Karen. Nice and full and colourful, just what I love to see. It's been another scorcher today here too. We visited my sister near Hull this afternoon for a few hours and it seemed a tad cooler there sitting out in the shade. It was 30c when we got back home and that was at 6.30. The plants are gasping for water now. It's enabled a really early harvest in the fields round us too. A much better year for the farmers.
Hooray... It's just started raining 1am, maybe it'll cool it down a bit so we can sleep better.

26 Jul, 2014

Much cooler her now HB. The sun is shining, but the vents in the GH are only just starting to open! See, I have a new temperature indicator now as well! :))

27 Jul, 2014

Thanks for the tour. Your garden is beautiful. I've never seen purple apples. They look delicious.

31 Jul, 2014

Thank you Bathgate. I googled purple apples, and to my surprise, there are many vars. with purplish skins.....I'm learning, slowly but surely!

31 Jul, 2014

Really hot all over the UK so it seems. Everyone retreating into shade or indoors. Nice and breezy and sunny today Sunday. Just summer pruning the apple and pear trees and trying to stop the vine taking over the patio. Your hot border is great Karen. Take care in that heat. It made me ill for a while last year.
