Catastrophe Corner...transformed!

The corner to the left of our entrance as you look from the house was a catastrophe when we came. A big pile of rocks, an overgrown hedge, and a huge old wild Rose shrub underplanted with an old Hdrangea.

Then we had the wall built to support the new gate (coming soon!). So after that we set about thinking what to do with Catastrophe corner.

We decided that this area of the drive is where my greenhouse will sit. It will be in the sun and will not take up any parking or planting space…ideal.

First we set about removing huge chunks of hedge and clearing out the old rose and Hydrangeas, all the ground elder etc. Once we had done this, we couldn’t believe the space we created back there!

Then the earth had to be levelled and all the stones re-organised to form a ‘wall’.

It seemed sensible to make this corner into an ‘edible’ area of some kind, as it will be behind the greenhouse. The corner at the opposite side of the garden is where the old plum tree is, so I decided it would be nice to have another plum tree.

The shade of the hedge will provide shelter and make an ideal spot for some blueberries and some strawberries to tumble over the edge completes the planting. I’ve also added some wild flower seeds.

That Hebe in the centre of the picture was planted a couple of months ago….UNDER the hedge! So you can see how much we’ve cut back!

I hope to have some ground cover from alpine strawberries in the future, but couldn’t find any seed today. Will have to look online for them.

My word Karen, you have been working hard ! Its looking good and sounds a good place for the greenhouse. Will it be the one you had before, or are you getting a larger one. The latter I expect.

Karen, I feel exhausted just reading your blog. What a lot of work you have done to the garden. It takes me months or even years to build up to a new project.

I'm with Michaella - those big rocks look great. They look like they've been the capping from a wall.
What a lovely wee productive corner you've created - good luck finding your wild strawberry seeds.

Thanks everyone. This morning it was so beautiful. I had my breakfast on the deck at the back, and as Scott was leaving for work I said "I bet you wish you didn't have to go to work today?" And he said "Need a rest"...and went off to see about 25 patients! Lol....what a life he leads. Yesterday I told him that I was seriously worried about his heart the way he carries on...his Mum and Dad both had heart attacks. But there's no way of stopping him, he is an absolute grafter! Even when we go on holiday, he insists on at least 3 hours of brisk walking every day...he gets bored if he's not working or exercising.....unless there's footie on the telly of course...THEN he sits still....and yells energetically at the TV screen!
