Spring time on the Patio

I’ve been tidying up, re-organising and weeding in this area this morning. It’s a good place to potter when the dogs are in their playpen. I can keep checking on them. Willow escaped twice yesterday morning, and so more canes had to be added to strengthen the wire fencing. Blooming puppy!! :)))

Anyway, as you can see, things are still a bit sparse really, but that’s April for you isn’t it. The main thing is, it’s all planted and ready to go in the summer. Planted with lots of scented things, and cottagey in style.

Lots of Erysimums, Dianthus, Phlox Paniculata, Lilies, Roses etc.

The water feature used to be in ‘Heuchera Corner’ at the old house. You might remember how it was surrounded with tiers of lovely Heuchs., in a very shaded corner.

If you look carefully you will see that I have some little ‘stones’ with spiritual words…they are a bit ‘naff’ as far as my OH is concerned, but I like them! I bought them on the Isle of Skye…beautiful place…magical!

Now it’s just more or less free-standing on it’s own, except for the Coronilla which is at its best during this month.

I have plans to surround it with some scented leaf pelargoniums which can be overwintered in the greenhouse. The patio faces south, so most Heucheras would be a bit scorched in this situation. I am also focusing on scent for this area, so the pelargoniums will work from that point of view as well…and look cottagey too!

Have you met Percy yet? Percy the Lion has been here since before we arrived.

He is a bit ‘patched up’ with filler, but still looking handsome and I struggled to position him, but he looks good here in the herb garden.

The Acers are coming out now, and it’s just so lovely to see the new leaves. Spring is here, and there’s no looking back now! Halleluia!

Hi Karen, all coming together now, Derek.

Things are really looking good Karen. Your hard, hard work has been worth every back aching, muscle straining minute.
Incidentally, It looks like the New Zealand daisies have taken. Thank you xx

Its looking great Karen I really admire your creativity, cant wait to see it later in the year when everything starts to flower and develop. A lovely spacious patio area too;0)

Thank you all so much. We are very lucky to have this patio. We priced the slabs to carry it right around to the front door, and it was far too expensive! Another thing to be thankful for!

Snoopdog, I put a pic on today. It's looking like a Sorbus of some kind, possibly sargentii. Doesn't look like mountain Ash...wrong shape I think...too tall...but time will tell.

It looks lovely, Karen, and it's going to be fab when the plants start to fill out. I love Percy! Your water feature looks good there - I remember it from your last garden. It's unusual.

karen, we must compare patio photographs, your pristine slabs against my natural stone. i win hands down. your weedless patio against my patio so full of daisies, dandylions and other assorted rubbish.

It does look lovely Karen, I'm pleased you have kept Percy, he has great character and looks right at home there.
I didn't know you have your puppy now, sounds like fun if he's already found an escape route, how is Molly with him???

It is looking like 'home' now Karen, everything looking good. Like the water features new home, is it switched on yet? Glad the fairy found a new place to sit too. Percy will keep an eye out on the garden from his new place. Everything is so pretty, things are growing so fast and your garden is changing daily, love it all. Not surprised that the neighbours love your work it looks fantastic. Hope you are managing to find time to sit and have a good old swing though.
Off to Dobbies tomorrow at Chesterfield. The Pension will have to stretch a long long way. lol. Need to buy some new Heucheras and some pots to put them in for my Christmas stand. It is in its new home and waiting for plants - what a good idea to have a shopping day at Dobbies hope they have some Heucheras in store. I need to spend spend spend. lol. Keep up the good work its looking lovely. :O)

Oh Mum, I hope you won't be disappointed. Our Dobbies has maybe three Heucheras. One or two in the herbaceous perennials section, and one or two in the Alpines section. They all seem to be brownish. Very disappointing. Our local nursery on the other hand...many pretty heuchs!

The water feature is on in the pics btw. :)) 4th pic down, you can see it...if you've got your specs on like me!

Lincslass...Molly has been absolutely terrific with Willow. They are like mother and daughter. Molly lets Willow chew her mercilessly, while only gently mouthing the puppy. She takes toys to Willow and is teaching her to chase the ball..lol! She doesn't even get cross when Willow tries to get at her food bowl (I always feed Molly a few seconds before Willow, as that is the pack order). She has exceeded all my expectations! As for escaping...well, Kathy did warn me! Willow has two desires...1. to chew the electric wiring, the carpet, and all the shoes in the house...and 2. To escape from the playpen and run amock in the farm fields. We have taken delivery of a dog run, which will be erected tomorrow and then all we'll have to worry about is her digging her way out! We're going to put wire mesh over the grass to stop that. lol!

Maisiesdad...I have no problem with 'relaxed' gardening! It's not me, but sometimes I wish it was! :)) You keep yours and I'll keep mine! :))

Thank you Melchi. I love my water feature, but sometimes, when the traffic is very sparse, it's nice to turn it off and just enjoy the skylarks singing! :))

yes I had my specs on Karen, but I couldn't tell whether it was sprinkling water or not. lol. :O)

Willow will get better at staying in her own garden in about six months time. lol. You will be super fit by then. lol.

15 Apr, 2014

lol....I wondered how long it would take. She hasn't actually made it past the hedge yet, but she loves being chased!

15 Apr, 2014

Rule No 1 never chase after them, lol bit like kids never chase after them either, I learned that a long time ago. I know it was a looooooooooooooooooong time ago. lol. they never turn round if they are being chased, they just keep running and running and running. lol. Tit bits in the pocket and sit on the floor she might come back to you then without you getting absolutely cream crackered. Note I did say MIGHT. :o)

15 Apr, 2014

lol...it's just too risky when we haven't got our gate on yet! You're absolutely right of course....sigh...hopefully we have put a stop to it now...the dog run arrived today, so that will contain her in the garden for now. :)

15 Apr, 2014

..btw, it says it takes 1 hour to erect said dog run....lol....shall I time us doing it? :)

15 Apr, 2014

lol :O three hours later then lol :O) you will get there. :O)

15 Apr, 2014

You are being optimistic I think!

Thats so good Karen, it makes for a lifetime friendship if Molly has accepted her enough to not guard her food and share the toys, I remember how dubious we were when first bringing Brynner home and introducing him to Morgan, we needn't have worried as Morgan had the patience of a saint with him, he had to have as Brynner was forever hanging onto his ears, still does sometimes when they are playing although I do tell him off for doing it now..
Some dog trainers recommend training with a whistle, my niece has a gorgeous black/lab puppy and its working with him, mind you he is still wrecking the happy home on a regular basis, he's 5mths old now...
Good luck with building the run in an hour, lol.
