Ron's Planter

As some of you already know, my Mother in Law died in March. We are in the process of clearing out her house and there was only one thing I wanted to bring home and that was a planter that we bought for My Father in Law, Ron, many years ago. I loved it at the time and now it reminds me of him. He was a special person….a gardener all his life. Everyone who met Ron loved him. I never heard him say a bad word against anyone that I can remember. He used to pick up sleeping bees and shelter them in his hands. We all miss him so much. He had Parkinson’s disease, which is just an awful condition which robbed him of the last 20 years of his life…but he kept on going in spite of all his disabilities and distress.

Anyway, enough of that sadness. Today we scattered MIL’s ashes around his memorial bench in a park, and it seemed a fitting day to clean up and replant the planter in memory of them both.

Here are the photos….the stone planter has four different depictions of cherubs gardening. I love it! And I planted it with my favourite Camellia ‘Night Rider’, so hopefully, this time I will succeed with this beautiful plant, as the first one died on me!

I think I’ll need to get out my little wire brush and have another go with the bleach on some areas, but it certainly looks a lot better than it did yesterday! :)

Hi Karen, what a lovely way to remember them both, with a beautiful planter like this one, Derek.

Thank you Derek. I can take that as a compliment, since it was me that chose it years ago! :))

What a lovelŷ planter and a fitting way to remember Karen.

I'd this Camelia hardy .

I lost mŷ Spring Festival that was in a planter.

It had been a sad day Karen for all but also happy memories of your Dear Fil

Yes Kath, I contacted the grower, and it is definitely hardy. But they advise keeping young camellias under cover for the first couple of winters.

Kath! What about this wind again...even worse than yesterday! It was whistling around our windows last night. Good news is it should die out by tomorrow morning!

We had a wonderful walk in Blackspout woods today in Pitlochry then some nice green tea in Hetties Tearooms

And it was not windy but its now windy this evening

Karen, that's a beautiful planter, so unusual. I hope your Camellia survives this time. I've also heard they shouldn't face the early sun, not sure if that's true or not, but have noticed that those around here, which don't have much nicer blooms.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Karen.

What a lovely planter! that must have taken some time to make, each different face in such detail. It must have weighed half at on even when empty!

Good luck with the new planting.

What a fitting memorial to such a lovely man. It's tough to loose a loved one but nice to have such a special reminder. You chose a gorgeous plant to show it off too.

A spray bleach might just get into the little bits the wire brush won't reach Karen. Obviously I don't need to advise watching out for spray especially in the wind.

13 Apr, 2014

Waddy, you are spot on. Don't let the early morning sun get on your Camellias. This one faces west, so that's good!

13 Apr, 2014

Fran, thank you ,it is a heavy one. :)

13 Apr, 2014

Angie, I might just try the spray bleach. I was having to be very careful today with the bleachy water in that wind! Think I got away with it.

Karen sorry to hear of your sad loss. The planter will always be a reminder of the many happy times you shared though.

Thanks Treetop. :)

Karen, sorry to hear of your sad times but you have found a lovely way to remember your in-laws. The camellia is a stunning colour and - although not normally a fan of cherubs - I love the images on the planter. It's something rather special and I do hope the camellia does well for you. We have a red one which was here when we moved in, 19 years ago. It is under the car-port and hence gets forgotten about but it is huge and quite spectacular; seemingly it thrives on neglect!

17 Apr, 2014

That's good to hear Tuesdaybear! Enjoy your red Camellia! :) Thak you!

18 Apr, 2014
