Patio Border....so far...

When we came, the patio border was full of weeds and overgrown shrubs and trees. The shape was really strange as well.

27th October 2013 (day after we moved in)

Ah, autumn sunshine….so pretty!

The tree was a plum. I love plums, but didn’t want a plum tree here. I have a much bigger one elsewhere.

So, first of all I all but emptied the border and planted some of the treasures in it which I had brought with me from the old garden.

29th November 2013…One month later

Next, I added an arch way to give a feeling of entering this area from the ‘lawn’ (moss).

Then I started to think about the shape, and tried to imagine how I could make it curvy and useful, while at the same time, not making it too large.

In the end, I realised that the border needed to follow the shape of the house and patio, and have straight edges.

I’ve been adding to the planting bit by bit, and today I added some more. Height is added to the border with some lovely standard roses and shrubs.

The plan it to have this border very cottagey in character and to focus on herbs and scented flowers. There still needs to be quite a lot of evergreen interest for the winter time, so thinking of evergreen shrubs that have scent….I added Rosemary, Abelia Grandiflora, Choisya ‘Aztek Gold’, Erica arborea, and there will shortly be an Osmanthus Delavayi as well. The standard Euonymus will also provide winter interest as will the Bay Tree if it survives here.

I’m looking forward to the summer so I can really see the transformation properly. I’ll be sure to show you too! :)

Hi Karen, big changes there, I don't think there's anything worse than having someonelses choice of plants foisted onto you, much better to have your own, Derek.

19 Mar, 2014

Well, the plants were well past their best Derek and far too big in scale for their position. I am so excited about this area in the summer time! :) Just hope it doesn't carry on this windy....:(

19 Mar, 2014

Hi Karen, yes I know what you mean about the wind, it's the same here, most summers are ruined by the wind, I've had a couple of garden gazebo's ripped to shreds by it, 1 had built in lighting, and I can't get a replacement cover for it, so £200 wasted, Derek.

19 Mar, 2014

Oooh, that's bad Derek. I remember in our last place, the neighbours were planning a party. They put up their Gazebo and went out. The wind got up a storm, and the whole lot came over our fence and in to our garden. We were trying to hold it back and ended up throwing it all back in to their garden. They never even came around to say thanks or apologise. I'm glad we don't live there any more!

19 Mar, 2014

What unappreciative neighbours, K....all looks well planned and balanced.Bet you cant wait for the flowering time!

19 Mar, 2014

Thanks Julia, you're right, I can't wait...but I'll have to! Lol!

19 Mar, 2014

I think you chose right with those straight lines, looks much better like that.
You've a lovely choice of plants and I've no doubt it will look every bit as you imagine in summer.

19 Mar, 2014

I can't believe how much you have done in a short time Karen ! Its going to look amazing ! I know what you meant now about straight edges ! It does look right.

19 Mar, 2014

Thank you both! I'm glad you approve of the straight lines. It was the right thing to do here, but you know how I love my curves! :))

19 Mar, 2014

Oh WoW its great Karen you have such a good eye my dear!

winds a problem here too north/easterlys the worst.
our gazebo's one of those semipermanent ones with the trellis pillars, after the second canvas roof ripped he gave up, strengthened the uprights and put a wooden roof on.
the curtains work well though you can draw the side which is windy!

19 Mar, 2014

Thanks Pam, very kind. Your Modified Gazebo sounds fab!

Dya ken what Snoop? I think I'm almost done for this season. I've just got the wildflower garden to sow, and the rockery to refurb, and that will be it. Oh, but wait, there's still the walls and gate posts to be built. I'm not doing that myself, but I'll be staining and varnishing the gates, and getting the greenhouse, and getting it erected, and sorting out the areas around the gate once it's up. Blimey! Still loads to do in fact! Lol! And then I'll start the veg garden.....better go and have a nap eh? ;) thanks!

It looks great karen, perfect place for that lovely arch and it adds height too. your well ahead gardening wise, ill have to catch up, I finished treating the decking today so i can start gardening now, forecast for frost here at the weekend :( loads to do as well..

19 Mar, 2014

We'll, you're well ahead of me on treating the decking Dee! That's so low on my list, it's not even written down yet...but now that you mention it, it really does need doing! :))

19 Mar, 2014

Oooh no, I added another job on your list eeek. im allways relieved when my decking areas done, jetwashed the path and red tiled patio as well. Oooops hahaha

19 Mar, 2014

Just great, Karen! My admiration knows no bounds. Just like your energy and enthusiasm! We have had good gardening weather here for a few days now. I have been getting the garden back to rights and indulging myself with a visit to the local nursery for pansies and some lovely anemones, which I've never grown before. The herb bed's next - it's quite a jumble!

19 Mar, 2014

Dee.....OH is in charge of the jet washing, but yes, that needs to go on the list too, as it's not quite finished for the season! :)) now, don't mention any more chores tonight eh?! ;)

Thank you Melchi. We will get there, but YDD keeps making my jobs list longer! ;)

Hi KAren, love the arch and I too agree re the straight edged beds. I am curious though about the patio transformation compared to the first photo when you first moved in- was it hours of cleaning the patio or did you put down a new one? Its a lovely transformation either way!

19 Mar, 2014

Power washer Sarah. When we moved in we thought we had an old patio, but once cleaned...new-ish slabs were revealed!

20 Mar, 2014

P.s. If you look closely, there are still some unwashed bits beside the house.....it's on my to do list! Lol

20 Mar, 2014

I really like the straight edges Karen, definitely the right way to go. Isn't it lovely to clear out the old and bring in the new plants too? Just wade through your 'Things to do' list at a steady pace! :o)

20 Mar, 2014

Thanks Shirley! :)

20 Mar, 2014

It's nice to have a re-cap with photos from the very beginning, you have done so much already. I like the new border and agree that straight lines work there. Can't wait to see it all in full flower now ;O))x

20 Mar, 2014

Yes, it really is looking quite bare at the moment. Next year I'll have more spring flowers...pulmonaria so and hellebores perhaps...thank you!

20 Mar, 2014

I can see you popping out today now you have made that comment!

20 Mar, 2014

Ha ha! You read my mind Hun. It has just stopped raining. I've already been out and bought a basket of mauve violas, and now I'm off to see if my local GC has any erysimiums. I was just thinking, pulmonarias and hellebores won't like it much in this south facing area, but I had a variegarpted erysimiums in the old garden, that flowered all summer, and looked lovely all year round! I thnk they might also be scented....are they? Soon find out!

20 Mar, 2014

oh, it's looking so good - and you've not been there that long, have you? seem to remember you moved just before I did. it's gonna be wondrous when you've got it all sorted - lol if a gardener can ever think that "everything's sorted"!

20 Mar, 2014

Thank you Fran! We moved in on 26th October. I'm really proud of what we've achieved so far, and so exited to see all the plants growing! :))

20 Mar, 2014

lol so long as you remember that one of a gardener's "jobs" is sitting down now and then and admiring the view!!!

20 Mar, 2014

Am sitting down now...ordering building materials for the new gate wall! Hopefully it will be built wk beginning 7th April. :)))) phone joiner and Electrician are today's next two jobs!

21 Mar, 2014

Looking great in your new gatden karen.... bet you are enjoying making it your own....

21 Mar, 2014

Straight lines were the way to go K, it is coming along really well, I know you will change it again and again until you are satisfied, we do it all the time, I am never 100% happy with the design, and always feel I could do better.....
Hope the weekend stays reasonably warm for you, and the winds die down.

21 Mar, 2014

I think Sunday is going to be nice A. I do hope so, I could do with some warm sunshine! Having said that, it is going to be quite cold, but if the wind drops it feels so much warmer! Today it was gale force again...I was chasing bags all over the place and then Molly and I were pelted with hail, twice! She was not best pleased, but I am trying to toughen her up a bit! lol!

21 Mar, 2014

Poor Molly, she must be like me. I hate it when it is windy......and believe me we get some wind here.

22 Mar, 2014

I'm not fond of it either. I'm going to have to get over it...it's a pretty windy garden. When I walk down the lane to the farm...there's never any wind at the farmhouse and it can be blowing at ours!

22 Mar, 2014

Your garden is coming on a treat Karen you certainly don't hang about, your a girl after my own heart when it comes to getting things sorted. Well done for all your hard work the garden is looking great and I agree with the straight lines, they look good next to the house!

24 Mar, 2014

Thank you Teds. I always wanted to be like one of those Gladiator Ladies on the Telly when I was 20something and I was just thinking today that really, I ought to have much bigger muscles than I do! I've been hard at it again all day...shifting boulders, mulching borders, moving soil. We're getting ready for the builders coming to build my new wall and hang the new gate. I'm very exited about it!

24 Mar, 2014

You've really made a difference Karen, I'm green with envy at your views too and looking forward to your summer pics:-)

26 Mar, 2014

I know BA...isn't it lovely? I have a problem these days...I don't want to leave the house...and it's nothing to do with a phobia!

26 Mar, 2014

Best thing ever Karen...ones house and garden...who need more than this..I know I don't.... :)))) Enjoy all the time you have got in it...life is too short when one has a place like this... :)))) now you see why I do not care for travelling...I would miss my garden too much....what with our weather and all...when the sun is shining we should be in our gardens....hahaha

26 Mar, 2014

Thanks Michaella! :) We have booked a trip to London for May, just a few days to celebrate our 25th anniversary, but apart from that, I'm staying put!

26 Mar, 2014

I know about the trip, that will be great. I hope you will have a lovely time. I went once, it was very nice, but not for me....I prefer to look at cottage gardens...they had too many modern type gardens, not for me..lol..I like old fashioned gardens...as if they have been there for hundreds of year...a bit rough around the edges....you know... :))

26 Mar, 2014

know what you mean M! :)
