Finishing touches to the utility corner at the back.

Here’s what we had after a bit of a tidy up…

And here’s what we have now…..

Scott made the woodstore and the planter, with help from his apprentice of course…

And today we laid some semi-permeable membrane and gravel to match existing footpath around the deck.

On the far side of the deck I have removed turf and edged with logs to make a bed to match the other side.

And this is the new bed. It needs a few more plants and some bark mulch, but we are almost finished here for now. It’s a very shady area, but there are plenty of plants that will tolerate, even thrive in shade. I am planning a white flowered shady garden like I had just made at my old home. I brought some of the plants with me, but I will be buying some more, especially white Lilies which I couldn’t bring.

Thanks Kath. It was such an eyesore, so it feels like a huge step forward! And YAY it's March. Jan and Feb no more! Hurray! :))

Yes grate I to achieve all it more fuchsia cuttings and in greenhouse and short walk.

It's been glorious today.

You used to come as favourite if you post anything but not any more don't know why.

Hi Karen, that looks good, like the matching beds, don't envy you though, with all that work, lol, Derek.

1 Mar, 2014

That's weird Kath! no idea why that is. But sometimes it doesn't alert me to friends postings either.

Thanks Michaella and Derek!

Now the spring to come and a chance to see the results of all your hard work, time to sit on the deck and admire your efforts, trouble is when you do that you start planning something else.

1 Mar, 2014

What have you planted in raised bed Karen?

1 Mar, 2014

Thanks Lizzie...still plenty of work to do!

Kath, three spotted Laurels and some crocus.

It's looking lovely, makes me want to pull up my socks and put on my boots and go out and get stuck in here.

Loved the raised bed - was it self-made, and if so, could you do a how-to? if it was bought, could you hint at the seller?

1 Mar, 2014

No Fran, you missed the bit where I said Scott made it with a little help from me. He made the woodstore as well! How he did it, I couldn't really say as I was only there to hold and support while he did the work. Sorry hun, but there must be loads of blogs on tinternet if you google something like 'make a raised planter'. :) x

Well done to Scott and his apprentice. That all looks really good now. What a pair of experts you are turning out to be. The neighbourhood will be asking for assistance in their gardens soon. lol. :O)

I doubt it Mum....our nearest neighbour is an expert and shows at the local flower shows. He's a real gem. In fact, he uses that walled garden I discovered to grow his produce, as his garden is very small. Having said that, I did meet a new neighbour on Thursday who has just moved back to the area after living down south for 30 years. She said she would like some advice in her garden...I hope I meet her again, she was lovely and it's always nice to make new friends. :)

Karen that's going to be so nice in your raised bed.

It is as if you wave a magic wand and transform all disappointing areas with one wave of it!!!

Looks so neat and tidy now.

1 Mar, 2014

that is lovely. you have worked so hard, it will be lovely to sit out and contemplate the world.

Some lovely plants that will soon put on new growth.

Wildrose! lol...I wish! Mind you, I don't really because the joy is in the achievement isn't it. It's not the same when someone else does all the work....but sometimes its much nicer...especially indoors. I just loved it when we had a painter and decorator a couple of times...it was years ago and it was to do areas we couldn't reach, but it was so good! In the garden I prefer to do it myself if I can. :)

Thank you Kath and SBG!

Right you are Karen, others can do anything else, elsewhere, but I would not let anyone touch my garden...as my garden is me, my personality, my mind, my thoughts, everything about who I am...weird I know...it is the way it is :)))

All looks very well thought out, Karen....you seem to be working at such a pace.....I remember doing that a few years ago! Now it's half the speed!
Your garden will develop into a relaxing haven for you all.x

1 Mar, 2014

Yes Michaella...I can't imagine you letting anyone loose in your plot! :))

Thanks Julia. We do seem to have been working very hard since we came back from our holidays, but it is all worth it. As for a relaxing haven...well...I am hoping to string a hammock up between those two big apple trees at the front! It will be a lot nicer when we get the walls built at the drive and the new gates on. Hopefully next month...then it will seem so much more private and relaxing. :))

It all looks wonderful love the planters very smart.

1 Mar, 2014

Love the planter and the storehouse...Well done Scott...and apprentice of course!!!Looking great Karen.

2 Mar, 2014

Karen its lovely x

what are your hedges bye the way?
maybe hawthorn?

2 Mar, 2014

Thank you all. Yes Pam, you're right. The hedge has been left to grow a bit too much into the garden, so pruning it back hard is proving to be a major, and painful task. We'll get there in the end, but for this year I am aiming to get one side, this north facing side done. I am managing to reclaim about a metre of planting space in my plot, and letting a lot more light in. The hedge was quite oppressive at the back here when we arrived!

2 Mar, 2014

It's a pity I can't find pic. of how it was when we arrived...all slime and algae! I wiped all my pics by accident when cleaning up the computer. :(

2 Mar, 2014

Congrats you two, I am very impressed with both the planter and the wood store, a great improvement......all getting to look more like a K garden......like the choice of gravel too.
Our log store will have to double up a dustbin holder as well!! had to ditch the alpine roof, got far too wet, at the moment it is a potting bench, so back to the drawing board on that one.........I am still saving up for the log burner, but, I keep spending the money on plants!!

2 Mar, 2014

Its looking great Karen ! Well done all of you and what a clever idea for hiding the bins !
Look on the bright side, you might not need the log burner soon when the weather warms up !

2 Mar, 2014

durr, I must have blinked and missed the caption. There are plenty of how-to's, mostly involving railway sleepers, but never seen any that look as nice as yours

2 Mar, 2014

Aw, thanks Fran. I can tell you that he built a frame and then clad it with decking board. He finished it with the planks over the top and painted it, then we lined it with semi permeable membrane. Then upturned turves went in the bottom, and the contents of one of the compost bins and some grit in the top. he's done me proud. I was even more impressed with the log store, as he just looked at pics of them and made it up from that. He's very clever though, and now he's bought himself an electric mitre saw...there's no stopping him. I shall keep putting pics of tree houses in front of him...you never know!! ;)

2 Mar, 2014

What a difference you've both made to this area. Best to get all the hard work over and done with now - in a month or so, you'll be able to slow down a wee bit and really enjoy it. Mind you, do you really want to sit and enjoy it....you'll only end up thinking of other things to do ;)
Loving the Viburnum BTW!

2 Mar, 2014

Thanks Scottish. I agree with your thinking...exactly the way it is. But as long as there are flowers I shall be happy. Ordered some from Long Acre today, so we will soon have that new border finished!

2 Mar, 2014

It's looking really nice now Karen, I do like how you have formed the bed on the opposite side of the decking, it balances it up nicely. It also appears to makes the area much bigger. That's a lovely log store and raised bed. I'm going to get T to put a ledge on the top of mine. It really finishes it well. I've showed him yours and he says he will do it.....I won't hold my breath but he will get round to it eventually. :o))

3 Mar, 2014

:0) Thanks HB....that's good to know that Scott has inspired some others to do some DIY! :)

3 Mar, 2014

Looks super, Karen. What a lot of work - no wonder you have a good feeling!

3 Mar, 2014

:) Thanks Melchi!

that helps a lot, thanks very much, Karen

4 Mar, 2014

Oh, good! :))

4 Mar, 2014

now I have "a cunning plan" ....

4 Mar, 2014

I do love a cunning plan! Especially when it means I get what I want! :)

4 Mar, 2014

It has made a big difference Karen, no good you putting that hammock up yet, you won't be using it for a while , you have two more seasons to get through in the garden, thats a lot of new choices to make and the joy of discovering what suits each and every corner, now that to me is a lot to look forward to, lol.......

5 Mar, 2014

Me too Lincslass! Thank you! :)

5 Mar, 2014

I'm so late with viewing blogs Karen! ... I do admire the work you have both done on this area ... you must be so pleased with the way it looks now. Well done! :o)
