The lights went on in the sky today! :)

I spent the best part of today outside in the miserable darkness and drizzle. I was working really hard out there again, but I did lift my head to the skies and shout – out loud mind – “Somebody please put the lights on!” It was so very very dark and grim! Still, I got all my jobs done and about 28 sacks of rubbish ready for the dump.

Then I came indoors for a nice long hot soak and just as I got indoors…guess what happened….the sun came out!

So I took some pictures after my bath, and now I’m sitting looking out at the garden and my, what a difference a bit of sunshine makes! It won’t last long, and its going to be raining all day tomorrow, but it really has lifted my whole world! Thank you sunshine angels! :)

Heres the view from the front door, with all the bags of rubbish on the left of the drive!

The new arch and front of the patio.

This lovely little pine tree was in a pot at my old garden and it looks nice in the lawn here.

This is the area I’ve been working on this morning…well one of the areas I’ve been working on. This is the front hedge to the left of the Heuchera corner. I’ve pruned the rose bush and the Berberis, which is just about flowering already! I’m going to have it as a cloud-pruned shrub, but today I just raised the crown, and thinned it out. I’ll clip the ‘clouds’ once flowering is done.

There are two Pieris in here now that were in the raised border.

Here’s the Heuchera corner, with the added Tete a Tetes and another little dwarf azalea that was in a pot from the old house.

And here are Mum’s double snowdrops under my smallest apple tree, just at the side of the house.

And I did get those two hebes out of the raised border at last! In this picture you can see the size of the area. I’m hoping to add some colourful herbaceous plants in here and re-organise the shrubs.

This one is taken from the little West facing patio, looking to the front. Can you see the little Tetrapanax Rex on the left. I have three and none of them have had any protection at all, but they are doing fine. :)

..and this is that grass that I really don’t care for. It was in the raised border. I’ve split it in to six pieces and stuck it in a pot ready for posting to friends!

A couple of views over the hedge…..

Thanks for looking in! :)

Hi Karen,
Your arch is the exact same one i put up a few years ago,
Its a good thing to have the get up and go to get out and do gardening when the weathers a bit on the sad side,

Our posty (post lady) thinks ive a screw loose because im always outside or in the workshop when she calls about 12 noon,
She's offten commented on how cold it is or dont you worry about getting wet etc etc,
What she's not knowing is i set my dinner time break from when she's here.

The good thing about gardening is no two days are ever the same, the jobs never finished and i find lots to keep me active in one way or another.
Keep the good work up.

I feel it also makes you enjoy the indoors better when the weathers really a no no ref doing anything outside.

I agree Dungy...indoors is so much nicer when you've been out for a few hours in the cold! Glad you like the arch! ;)

It all looks lovely, Karen! How nice to see the sun. We've had quite fair weather this week, but I've been stuck indoors, feeling rotten with laryngitis. Really frustrating! But lots more gardening time to look forward to, I hope, and lots of plans forming! ;-)

6 Feb, 2014

Thanks Melchi. I'm sorry to hear about your throat. It's a horrid infection, makes you feel so unwell. Get better soon :)

6 Feb, 2014

You are achieving wonders out in your new garden in so short a time Karen! You have some spectacular views there too..
You really are a designer in the making my friend..\0/xxx

6 Feb, 2014

Thanks, Karen - I am feeling a lot better today. I suppose the rain will start now. No - that's a very negative comment! Sorry!

6 Feb, 2014

6 Feb, 2014

How lovely it looks in the sun......you deserve a treat from the angels for working so hard x

6 Feb, 2014

Karen, I said you were doing too much and I asked for you to 'slow down'...now I'm begging you!
Seriously, you're working wonders. It's all going to look fantastic as the year unfolds.
Just a question, what's under the lump on the lawn, right of the drive? You haven't buried the OH? Lol!

6 Feb, 2014

(Mouldy picks his chin up from the floor!!!)

Fan-flippin-tastic, Karen and my hat's off to you.
You've worked wonders in such a small space of time!

6 Feb, 2014

Hanks everybody. I don't know what on earth I'll do next Feb! The mounds near the drive were made with left over topsoil. I like them, they add something next to that big driveway. The vendor assured me that he hadn't buried his ex under there!

6 Feb, 2014

And you believed him? ;-|

6 Feb, 2014

Oi - can we have our sun back? Been flippin' raining all day down here again :-(

6 Feb, 2014

Lol...nope, we've requisitioned it for the referendum! You'll get it back in September if you're nicer to us!

6 Feb, 2014

Hmmm - politics. Don't get me started. No, you can't have the pound, get your own currency

6 Feb, 2014

Lol! Perhaps we'd better stop right there! ;))

6 Feb, 2014

the garden is already looking wonderful. cant wait to see it as the year progresses.

6 Feb, 2014

At this rate scuba diving will be included in the national curriculum. ;-)

6 Feb, 2014

It would be solved at a stroke if they appointed a Minister For Rain

6 Feb, 2014

Who's the biggest drip in the cabinet? ;-)

6 Feb, 2014

Thats the best idea yet Andrew......was it the minister for drought that made it rain?........

7 Feb, 2014

I also wondered what the "hump" in the lawn was Karen, thanks for putting me out of misery!! All looking good, what colourful shrubs have you in mind?

7 Feb, 2014

Pamg - in 1976, yes. Within two days if I remember correctly

7 Feb, 2014

You're doing a grand job, I would be doing the same, out in all weathers, nothing would have stopped me, or my OH he was unstoppable, he still is, once he has the bit between his teeth, shall be pleased when my three months rest is up, should just fall right, only 7 weeks to go!!

7 Feb, 2014

I am racking my brains for why you are on enforced rest, and have come up with nothing A. What have I missed/forgotten now?

7 Feb, 2014

Had an operation, was on one of my blogs a few weeks ago, 3 months of enforced rest, surgical stockings for 6 weeks!! very fetching, forgotten what my legs look like lol!! Just pleased the weather is against me, but very frustrating, my head wants me to do things, but my body can't, still not long now!! just hope to up and running in time for the Spring....

8 Feb, 2014

Glad to hear you're on the mend, DD2!
I might stretch to a pair of those stockings, too. ;-)

8 Feb, 2014

Oh Karen, or should we call you 'Wonder Woman', you are making such good progress, despite the rotten weather. I love the views from your cottage, so much nicer than the houses and trampolines at your previous place! Have you ordered a 'Sit & Ride' lawnmower yet? Looks as though there's a lot of grass to be mown ... :o)

8 Feb, 2014

Your garden vision is taking shape and is already looking full of great promise. You have worked so hard and it has been well worth it.

It's looking good :-)))

8 Feb, 2014

Is that for robbing the bank Mouldy?

8 Feb, 2014

Mouldy they are a bu.... to get on, and off, treated myself to an hour without them today, I think they are disfiguring my legs, lol

8 Feb, 2014

Thanks Shirley and Wildrose! DD2...I hope you are on the mend! Sorry I totally missed your news re. Op :(

9 Feb, 2014

Thanks Karen, a slow job, but getting there.

9 Feb, 2014

Fantastic work you've done so far Karen! I love the vistas you have and your long sweep of front garden is one in itself, it's very beautiful no wonder you love being out there in all weathers!

9 Feb, 2014

Just wondered if they'd look good with my new slingbacks. ;-)

9 Feb, 2014

Thanks Janey. It's really quite a small garden...but manageable! :)

They will look fab Mouldy....I suggest you go out in them...after dark!

9 Feb, 2014

What, with MY gorgeous pins? Lol.

10 Feb, 2014

Hiya Karen, I really don't know what is happening on my page as I'm not getting notified of favourite members blogs ! As I'm used to you doing regular ones , I decided to check to see if you had done one ! So...better late than never ! Its coming on really well now and you certainly have worked hard ! Its going to look lovely in the spring ! If we get one, that is, without the rain ! Torrential rain here today which then turned into snow, but its not cold enough for it to settle ! One good day yesterday and managed to get outside. The sun shone ! ! !

11 Feb, 2014

Rose! You should see what just happened here...it's been a really cold wind all day, but bright. About a half an hour ago a horrendous blizzard came on...from out of nowhere...I could hardly get the door open for the strength of the wind, but we had to get the furniture safely away from the glass doors...whoa! Horrid! Snow lying now. :(

11 Feb, 2014

Cold here, but at least it only rained this morning, we have been lucky (touch wood) Other areas in Hampshire are under water, poor souls.

11 Feb, 2014

Oh dear Karen ! I hope it doesn't last too long so that you can get back outside ! Its such weird weather ! A lot of the plants in the garden haven't died back through the winter like they should and most of the roses have kept their leaves ! A beautiful foxglove called Illumination, which is classed as a perennial started to flower yesterday, but I decided to cut it back to give it more energy for this year !

12 Feb, 2014

No snoĊµ here yet Karen well nothing that is lying it may all change later.

12 Feb, 2014

Sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, snowy, hailstoney and very cold.
And that concludes the weather report from Glasgow. ;-)

12 Feb, 2014

Yes, the winter cold arrived here yesterday, and it's freezing now. But nothing to complain about really, nothing like the poor folk who have lost their homes to the floods.

12 Feb, 2014

Pity the govt hadn't put enough cash aside for such a disaster.
When will they learn, I wonder?
Unfortunately, this sort of event will occur more often over the coming decades...lives lost and ruined.

12 Feb, 2014

I know, it's tragic. As for the politicians...they will never learn. I have absolutely no faith in any of them...complete shambles, the lot of them. One or two noteable exceptions.....but mostly a rotten lot. :((

12 Feb, 2014

Most of them look on it as a lucrative career, instead of a vocation to serve the public.

12 Feb, 2014

oh, wow, what a garden! and what potential!! you really fell on your feet, Karen - hope to see lots more pics of future developments

Sadly, flooding will occur more frequently, not just because of climate change, but mainly beacuse they *will* keep building new homes on known floodplains - Thames Gateway was talking about thousands of new homes in areas known to be prone to flooding.

I can't understand why homes are allowed to stand empty in towns because the ownsers get more tax advantages from leaving them empty than from renting them out. If such landlords were penalised for leaving properties empty, they'd soon find tenants - and that'd halve the pressure for new housing (at least!).
