The Orchid Gardens at the Mansion of Sitio Litre, Puerto de la Cruz, Ten...

The garden claims to be the oldest in Tenerife and has been British owned for over 280 years. It is the garden of a private mansion which was once the Tenerife home of Marianne North (of Kew Gardens fame) and also the home of Oscar Wilde’s father, William Wilde. During a visit, Agatha Christie wrote her story ‘The Mysterious Mr Quin’ here.

The gardens are laid out in the ‘garden room’ style, at least six different spaces, with a variety of different styles of planting, the highlight of which is the orchid garden which contains the largest collection of orchids in Tenerife. Sadly they are unlabelled, but I hope you still enjoy seeing them.

There’s bouganvillea everywhere in the garden, in all the different colours, and every ‘room’ has a building of some kind to provide somewhere cool to sit and enjoy the plants, butterflies and birdsong.

The orchid collection is in one ‘room’. The plants are raised up about 3’ off the ground on both sides of a long narrow pathway, and are covered overhead with plastic roofing to create plenty of shade.

At the bottom of the orchid garden I came across this little sanctuary….I just love little secret places like this in gardens!

More highlights of the gardens…..

At the top of the Orchid garden is a noisy cage of Love Birds…

So pretty!

As you enter the gardens from the street, you come upon two huge lily ponds containing many beautiful fish…

…and …..

Isn’t he gorgeous? :)

And as some of you will know, the Canaries are famous for their Dragon Trees. Not trees at all, but still….magnificent plants….this one, just behind the Mansion of Sitio Litre, is over 600 years old and stands at the entrance to the Cafe.

I hope you enjoyed your visit! Thanks for coming along!

Just beautiful!
makes me realise that's how orchids want to live, not shoved in a pot in my sitting room.....
the wildlife is gorgeous too .......

You must have been in 7th heaven, Karen.
All that colour.
Sun, too...
then back to rainy old Scotland! Lol.

That's the thing isn't it Pam....everything thrives in it's natural environment. When we were there I was musing on how in my early gardening days, I would try to push all the boundaries. Now, after 25+ years experience! I prefer to grow things that will thrive much more than plants that will struggle and disappoint.

Mouldy, I went twice to this garden....it is stunning...one of my favourites...but there's no place like home...even with the mist and rain! :)

Super blog Karen. I do wish I could forward it to a friend of mine who is an expert in Orchids, he would know what they all are I'm sure. Nevertheless, they are beautiful to look at, as are many other pics here especially the Love Birds. :):)

Thanks Waddy. sadly the lovebirds were behind wire mesh, so the pics are slightly blurred. You could go in to the cage, but with my luck I'd have ended up covered in poo. birds always see me as a target. Many years ago on discovery island in Disney world it was so bad. I had to remove my denim over shirt and bin it! Lol. They've been doing it ever since I was very small. I remember getting pooped on on lake Windermere as a child.

They are really beautiful photos Karen. I wish I'd known about those gardens when we went some years ago - so glad you found them!

Wonderful to see the 'Monarch' butterfly. Am wondering if it flew across the Atlantic to Tenerife ?
They really are amazing creatures.
I once went to Cornwall looking for them, no luck.

Wow, you do get to some beautiful places Karen and you mentioned two of my favourite writers, Oscar and Aggie. Your pics are wonderful, is the lizard an iguana? he's magnificent and looks very pleased with himself. Did William Wilde own the house and gardens at one time? If so a bit of Irish ownership to break up the British lol:-))

How lovely, those orchids are to die for, thankyou so much for sharing Karen....

20 Jan, 2014

Absolutely beautiful, Karen ! I don't know anything about orchids and have never bought one just incase I kill it !

20 Jan, 2014

Thanks everybody, I'm glad you enjoyed the blog. BA you are quite right! They say it has been in continuous British ownership....well! perhaps he didn't own it but just rented...I don't know the answer to that one!

Iguana? I thought so, but I am only guessing, and there was no info at the site. I wouldn't even have spotted him, it was OH that saw him. I was so glad because I love lizards!

Wildrose, I agree about the statue, it was such a lovely example of these ever so popular little shrines.

It is a beautiful place. I could imagine it long ago when it was one of a few houses on the hillside. now it's a real urban oasis, with tall buildings all around. Shame really.

21 Jan, 2014

Beautiful orchids.

23 Jan, 2014

That would be a dream for me,to see all those lovely Orchids in their natural environment..my two pale by comparison,as you would expect ! I adore the Iguana too..magnificent creatures..shame about the birds that make a beeline for you ! Lol..I wonder why that is? Maybe they see you trying to avoid them, and make sure you aren't 'the one who got away ':o) Beautiful place,Karen, thanks for sharing .x

It must be something to do with the colour of me Bloomer!! ;)) or just the look of me....or the way I move! lol...whatever it is, it is quite funny, but not that day in Disney...that was scary! That was also the day that my son Callum (now 22 but about 3 at the time) developed a bird phobia. He's just about over it now, but during his childhood he was terrified of big birds and wouldn't even look at a Parrot. It was when we sat down on the beach to eat our picnic and they all came around and hassled us...he was really upset, which is totally understandable with those aggressive gulls. Ah well, these days are long gone now......sigh....

23 Jan, 2014

It's amazing how things stick in a childs mind from such an early age..that must have been a terrifying experience for you all..he would see how you were scared for him too..anyway,glad he is ok now..just humans to be wary of,sometimes :o)

24 Jan, 2014

24 Jan, 2014

They know where the best places are,Karen..would you want to sleep in your garden at this time of year? :o)

24 Jan, 2014

Hmmm...;)

24 Jan, 2014

I s'pect those three bears were a trifle economical with the truth 'bout their encounter with Goldilocks.
Breaking in, scoffing their grub, vandalising their furniture, then having the barefaced (How I resisted the pun I'll never know!) cheek to have a kip...look me in the eye and tell me you wouldn't be sorely tempted to mete out some justice?
I'm just saying... ;-)

24 Jan, 2014

yeah..it was enough to make them as mad as Mouldy when you put it that way laithe!

24 Jan, 2014

I bought four bird of paradise seeds from the or oh garden shop in March. Three didn't take but one plant has come up but it is not a bird of paradise. Does anyone know what it is? It was grown in fresh potting soil indoors to start with so no blown seeds could have got in and nothing here resembles it .i want to add a photo but don't see how.

Have sent you a private message Anne :)
