Yet another walk

We went out for another walk today,in between the showers. We went to the Haytor Tor area to follow the old Granite tramway that they used to transport this extra fine quality stone down to Teignmouth,it was eventually loaded on boats to go by Sea and canals, a lot to London. some of it actually went to making London bridge. The Tramway was built in 1820 by James Templer, thats why it sometimes known locally as “Templar Way”
The first 2 pic’s are taken from the road, looking up and down, You can see Haytor Rock in the back ground.

This little lady came over to help us with our sarnies, she was so cute

This picture shows how the solid Granite was grooved by hand to make a tramway, that horse drawn carriages could easily remain in.

A close up of the quarries

As we got nearer the track dissapeared over a ravine they had built up with rock’s

This must have been where they went of the track,or overtook

This piece of granite shows the marks they made trying to break it up, drilling it by hand.

And then we were visited by yet some moor ponies.

The Tramway closed in around 1858 as easier and cheaper granite Quarries were found.During its life, thousands of Tons were hauled yearly on this very hard terrain.

Those ponies are so beautiful. How on earth are you managing these walks on crutches?!!! I take my hat off to you, CM. Love that feeling of untamed nature in that area.
