It's been a bit windy!

Hello folks.

I know that it will be news to no-one, but it’s been a tad windy here in Cornwall for the last couple of days.

As the torrential rain had stopped by this afternoon, my husband and I decided to brave the fierce winds and walk down to the town and to the beach – just 15 minutes away.

Approaching the beach between the sand dunes, we were buffetted as the wind was funneled through te gap and a new dune was being formed in the path. Larry was following in my footsteps but, deciding that he had been sufficiently sandblasted by this stage and withdrew to the safe haven of a nearby cafe.

I leaned against the wind, put my hood up and forced my way forward onto the beach. Once through the dunes, the sand was less ‘in your face’ and I was able to see the full might of the North Atlantic as the waves crashed over the breakwater and up the beach.

The little footbridge over the tidal river Neet is normally under water at high tide, nothing new there, but you don’t expect to see waves rolling up the river.

I’m afraid that there’s a bit of camera shake in the photos as it was impossible to stand still and leaning against the wind I was subject to gusting.

After a few shots I decided that it was time to beat the retreat and join Larry in the cafe.

On our walk home we passed this poor old damaged tree. It had fallen since we had passed it an hour before.

The mighty force of nature!

All quiet now, thank goodness.

Yes indeed Nature has a cruel streak at times ...what a shame ....the poor old tree....and the folk that live in that house must have had a fright .....eeek!! Did it catch their conservatory ....it looks like it did.

I inserted some symbols on a word document, then cut & pasted them! YOU, however, can just copy & paste these ones if you want to, Daisy!

So no surfing then! Thanks for braving the elements to take pics for us city folk. When ever I go to St Ives I hope for a good storm ( just for a day) but always miss them. We are going in December so we could be in with a chance!

I love the sea when it's rough.
Glad you enjoyed your walk

Great blog! My mother emailed me about the storm you got - she said the slates were rattling on the roof. The people in the house with the fallen tree were lucky - looks like it just missed their greenhouse! Good thing it didn't fall onto the pavement and the road as you were walking by.

Hello all.

Thanks for your comments and apologies for the delay in replying. I've been out for the day.

Today dawned much calmer and quieter thank goodness but I believe that we have more 'weather' on the way.

The tree is in the garden of a backpackers' hotel and fortunately it missed the conservatory. Only just. I'll bet the owners are relieved as they had spent quite some time earlier this year taking the conservatory apart and rebuilding it.

Bit choppy down there in Cornwall then Claire?! My husband laughs at that term...apparently it wasn't recognised in the RN!

Well done you for braving the elements for a photo opportunity!

Thanks Fluff. Yes, a bit choppy is a good description. I do love it when the sea shows it's power!

Oh yes Claire, the mighty Atlantic. I used to go to Cornwall a lot in my younger days and I really must go again. Your pictures have reminded me of what a beautifully wild and rugged place it is. Hope that the weather has settled down a bit by now :~)

Thanks Sue.
Weather still very rough here, but fortunately the rain is passing us by for a day or two. I'll put some pictures of it in calmer weather one of these days.

Oh yes please Claire. You'll take me back to my youth !! lol ;~)

As a Devonian brought up on the Jurassic coast I used to go out specifically in the roughest of storms just to get that exhiliration from waves crashing up & over the sea wall. Magic.
