Went outside today to clear up a few pots and put some tender plants in the greenhouse and thought I would take a few pics to share with you all. Having never had a garden before this one has its advantages and disadvantages – I have very little knowledge of plants, pests or propagation, (the three P’s)! The advantages are that I am learning something new and wonderful every day that I work (play) in the garden, sometimes by trial and error, sometimes by surprise as a plant pops up that was once covered by brambles or weeds. What little I know I have picked up from books, magazines and now from this wonderful website.

Dragons Den. You can’t see it very clearly here, but there is a dragon in the cave

These have grown about six feet in four years

This is the edge of the wildlife pond, no fish in this one, just toads frogs and lots of newts.

This is the new arch K put up at the weekend and the new bed he dug out for me under the Eucalyptus tree. The tree was an offer from a daily newspaper which I got about three years ago. It was about a foot high when it was delivered!
As you can see, there is a lot of fencing that needs covering with climbers and lots of lawn that needs digging out for new beds.

Do you have any climbers in mind ?

this looks lovely. do you leave your plates out all winter? I hope they are fully frost hardy or they may break. that would be such a shame.

2 Dec, 2009

Yes, I agree with TT - It's going to be interesting seeing it develop. I love your wildlife pond BL.

Your garden looks good I love your pond

Also love your wildlife pond and you are so lucky to have newts too !

Having a garden is a joy - and I'm glad you're finding that out.

I find GOY such a help in all kinds of ways - I can ask a question and get an answer in a very short time; I can get inspiration; and learn about unfamiliar plants - they often go on an ever-growing wish-list!

Glad you joined? Of course you are! :-)))))

TT, I'm unsure about which climbers, I'm looking for good cover, colour and all year interest if possible. I love Clematis but am unsure about pruning. Looking for ideas!!!!! SBG, I take the plates in during the winter months as they have come from various holiday destinations so all hold memories.
Skillen, Donnah and Bonkersbon - when K built the koi pond I asked (told!!) him I wanted a wildlife pond - In the summer all the newts come up to the shallow end and lay there teasing Minxie - she sits on the rocks all day just staring in at them! When we are skimming off the duck weed we have to check every netfull because invariably there are baby newts in amongst the weed.
Spritzhenry - YES YES YES!!!!!!! :0)))))))

You've got lots to do but you'll have fun with it. And you can share it with us. Your ponds are lovely, especially the wildlife one. I thought it looked wonderful. I also like the cave in the other pond. It reminds me of a cave I had in my previous garden, but there was no pond.

You have a lovely garden BL....I love your ponds. I also love your dragon. :o)

Lovely garden BL ! The wildlife pond is lovely and the Dragon's Den... fabulous !! You've given me an idea now for some plates that I have that were due for the car boot !! lol :~))

Love your garden,BL.It will look good when you decide which climbers you want to cover your wall.Which direction does your wall face,as this will help you chose your plants.Clematis are not really hard to look after. They need good soil, plenty of water, heads in the sun,and roots in the shade. They do well in any position except North facing,as wouldn't get enough light or sun.If very sunny, like mine,I have flat stones around the roots,as it also helps to shade, and keep moist,as it is a dry area in the shadow of a wall.
Or you way want something more evergreen, for colour or berries for the changing seasons.Pyracanthas are effective and easy care too. There are so many things ,and you are spoilt for choice really.I learnt most of my stuff by reading too,and advice from friends...and trial and error (many)of course, which everyone does,as no one is born knowing what to do.As long as you enjoy it BL.thats the main thing.A warm welcome to you also, and I hope you get addicted like the rest of us.:o)))

Wow Guys! Thanks for all the comments - Annella, the eucalyptus is lovely and has grown so much in three years, I use it for flower arrangements all the time - Hwyel - you are right, there is sooooo much to do - but now I've found this website I have more ideas than ever! The planting round the wildlife pond was pure beginners luck - I had no idea what would happen with most of them but they all seem to be growing like crazy!
Gilli and Sue - I love dragons and found the one in the cave at a craft fair held at Sandringham every year, I had this idea about a cave and water feature and poor K had to construct it..haha, Sue, I have loads more plates on the patio area, bought a lot from holidays, car boots, charity shops - now my mum and neighbours are doing the same!
Bloomer - great ideas I am going to order some plants for the spring and by the way - I'm already addicted!
:0)

A belated welcome to GoY! I was attracted to your blog because I wrote one a couple of days ago with the same title but different circumstances! Your ponds are lovely. Regarding pruning of clematis, Spritzhenry wrote a blog a while back explaining it all and I've copied and saved it so I know what to do now (I think!) but if I'm in any doubt I know who to ask. I too am in the process of trying to cover some fencing and one plant I bought was an evergreen honeysuckle called Mint Crisp; I know other members have it too. Glad you're already addicted :)

3 Dec, 2009

Thanks Gee, I will look at Spritzhenrys blogs and keep a record of it. I have a couple of small clematis but they look like they have died a death so any help in that area will be much appreciated. I am just off to read yours now - Ironing? Vacuuming? too busy reading!......:0)

LOL !!! What housework ????? ;~)))

3 Dec, 2009

Shhhh Sue! - we dont use the H word round here......

3 Dec, 2009

I agree with you BL and Sue.The dreaded H word HAS to fit in around playing on here.don't forget ....3 days dust is as easy to shift as one.lol......and if you run with the vac,its done in no time !! not easy if you have stairs though :o))
Glad you are addicted too.

LOL....Just mind you don't put anything on the stove and then come on GoY. We've had some very near misses and smokey kitchens on here. :oD

3 Dec, 2009

What a lovely garden I like the dragon as well.

3 Dec, 2009

I can believe that Gilli, I'm bad enough without the added distraction of of GoY!
Thank you Mavis - hopefully I will get some planting done in the spring.

3 Dec, 2009

Your garden is looking good...love the pond/cave area...I'm going to have to search the auctions etc for a candelabrum. Bloomer is right....you're spoilt for choice regarding climbers. I can only suggest you find something you like at a garden centre or on GoY, then ask about it, read about it...trial and error...without too much error I hope. Enjoy your weekend.

4 Dec, 2009

Take heed of Gilli;s warning on smoky kitchens,BL,as that was me.Thats what happens when you get carried away on here.Pleased to say,no damage, and Pork chops were delicious !!!

4 Dec, 2009

Philc - the candleabra you see was being thrown away by my brother - the bottom was missing so it wouldn't stand up on its own - because I cannot stand seeing anything thrown away ;0) I took it and "planted it" next to the pond!
Bloomer - I laughed about the smoky kitchens - it is something I am soooo likely to do - I have had a few near misses with running taps in the past!

Hi busylizzy your garden looks great. Funny about the vine weevil. I was going to recycle my strawberry plants in their grow bag. Today I went and checked it out, and there they were...... lots of white maggotty little so and sos. Later on they get little legs on either side and look even more disgusting. Then they turn into black beetles. They certainly splatted your cyclamen. GOY people are so clever at knowing what causes what.....)))000 I know about them and they still zapped my strawberries!!!!!!!!!! LOL

5 Dec, 2009

Gorgeous Garden, BL!! I love it!

6 Dec, 2009

Thanks Doriac - bad enough that a small Cyclamen was killed off - I would have been mortified if they killed off my Strawberries!
Thanks MP - loads to do - role on Spring :0))
