What Good Witches REALLY do at Samhain!!!

What Good Witches REALLY do at Samhain!!!

Posted on 31 Oct, 2009 76 comments

Well…..first of all, they get up at 4.30 in the morning to post their Hallowe’en blog…..having failed miserably to post it as promised at midnight the previous evening….

Then they look outside, once light has broken ( four hours later….) to check the state of play outside…..

\

\

...and they are delighted – and count their blessings – that it seems fine, warm and sunny…after days and days of rain which have made the river look THIS close to the garden….

\

\

So…they huff and puff ( in a witchy sort of way ) until their long-suffering husband gets up and agrees that it’s a pretty good day to paint the new front door….whether he likes it or not ( witches are rubbish at applying gloss….but VERY good at choosing the colour…)

\

Of course, having got one thin coat on the door ( the photo doesn’t do it justice, it’s the most beautiful shade of blue ) we must now leave it open for the remainder of the day…so we have a houseful of bluebottles…and it’s bl@@dy COLD!

The witches’ husband then disappears ( magic! ) to Dundee for the afternoon, all nice and warm in his centrally-heated Subaru Forester, leaving the poor, chilly witch to have a wander round the garden…where she finds….a fairy???

\

Well… it MIGHT have been a fairy! The drainage ditch, which takes the overspill from the river, lies just beyond the beech hedge boundary, and the sun, shining through, was what made this photo really come to life!

The soggy, cold witch carried on, camera akimbo, around her sodden patch, snapping the odd picture, hither and yon…..

\

\

Then she bethought herself, and scuttled back indoors ( where it was colder than it was outside…..) and prepared her Trick or Treat Bags for tonight, when the wee ones will be calling…..

\

Still cold! And then….REAL magic! Michael The Wood appeared, with two trailer-loads of this…..

\

\

So…they bring some inside….and wave their magic firelighter and match….and abracadabra!....

\

Happy Hallowe’en, everyone!

Thank you all, kind GoYers! The neighbour's grandchildren were a delight....one dressed as a mini-witch with flowing purple hair ( a wig, not her own flaxen locks dyed or anything like that ) and pointy hat and broomstick and her older brother done-up as a werewolf with his granny's old fur gloves! She recited 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, My Dad's got a rusty car..' ( new one on me! ) and the little werewolf, with help from his Dad, did one I've not heard for about 35 years and I still can't remember it! The one that ends '..out went the doctor, out went the nurse, out went the lady with the alligator purse...'

The second they'd finished, and much to their parent's embarrassment they shouted 'Trick or Treat!' and having got their goody bags, yelled 'Can we go now?' !!! Kids, dontcha just love that level of honesty!

Oh Brill B. We had a few (expected) witches, skeletons and assorted monsters but the local teens tried it on! My security cameras won the day ;~)))

Thank God for CCTV ay Ian ?? Had a visit from two little kids of about 5 and 7 from over the road with their Mom. I pretended to be SO scared and they giggled like anything !! Had no sweeties so gave them a quid. It was delightful !! :-))

As I said Sue these little monsters were expected so we had bought one of these multi bags (bite sized sweets) and their faces were a picture when we showed them what we had! :~0

They were so excited at being up after dark, they either fell asleep as soon as they got home or their mum was up all night dealing with poorly tums from all the chocolate. We haven't seen them yet this morning but it is bucketing it down here so I'm not surprised!

1 Nov, 2009

I'm away to get our curry on for tea now, Sue......Tikka Masala and a Chicken Madras....so it'll be blowing a gale up here at Inverwotsit later tonight!

;-)

20 Nov, 2009

Did you know (of course you do, you know everything !! lol) that Tikka Masala is NOT an Asian Dish ?? :~)

20 Nov, 2009

Oh heck...I hate to say it, but yes, I did!!! Like pizza isn't Italian...it was 'invented' as an Asian/Indian dish to satisfy the British 'idea' of curry, and pizza is Italian-inspired Americana!

Yorkshire Pudding, on the other hand.......

;-)))
xxx

20 Nov, 2009

Bscott, at last! I know something you don't. Yorkshire pudding was originally used as house bricks in Nyasaland. The recipe was brought back by British missionaries but was accidentally over whipped by aggressively zealous yorkshire brick makers and once fired were found to be of no use whatsoever and thrown out into a large pit. A chance tasting by a poor large eyed starving orphan changed the fortune of this delicacy forever. This is true, my husband is from Yorkshire and this knowledge has been passed down through the generations. Yes I've had a glass or two of wine, so what :-)

20 Nov, 2009

LMSO ......

20 Nov, 2009

Cheers Ian:-)

20 Nov, 2009

Your welcome BA (Barracas?)

20 Nov, 2009

Almost:-)

20 Nov, 2009

Lol ;~))

20 Nov, 2009

Erm....but they don't build houses with bricks in Nyasaland, BA, so I think perhaps your husband has been pulling at least one of your legs...that, or some of his ancestors did not hail from the land of God's Own Pudding....had they done so they would certainly have heard the TRUE tale.....hang on whilst I go and make it up.....

21 Nov, 2009

My husband would never dream of lying to ME and of course they don't use bricks now, that was in the olden days.... a lost civilisation, you're only jealous 'cos you had'nt heard about it. Anyway I'm just off to fill in my MENSA application form they've been begging me to join for years... so there 8-/~~

21 Nov, 2009

Good luck with the MENSA test!
It's pretty easy, I passed mine in 1985!

;-)

21 Nov, 2009

LMAO!! and the band played believe it if you like!!!!!

21 Nov, 2009

98th percentile, Marie! But yes, I fibbed. It was 1984 when I sat it!

21 Nov, 2009

Lol! Have you finished making up the yorkshire pudding story yet?

21 Nov, 2009

Make sure it's not the MENSA version B ! Too many long words for us mere mortals !! tee hee hee ;~)))

22 Nov, 2009

Erm...no, I'm still working on that one, Marie and Sue.....erm....scratch head....um....err......get back to you sometime.....maybe they DO come from Nyasaland, after all......

;-)
xxx

22 Nov, 2009

LMAO!! (quietly, dont want to wake everyone!)
Well, Brenda, if you're in a hole, stop digging! LOl!

22 Nov, 2009

...good idea, Marie, otherwise I'll end up in Nyasaland with batter on face!

;-)

22 Nov, 2009

Exactement! Lol!
