If you want to go down the seed route, sow either now or in spring in seed trays and leave in a cold frame or similar. Germination can be slow and erratic

Hi Bren. I understand you can but the usual method is division of the root ball which will get you extra plants far quicker.

I used one of those small plastic greenhouses inside my greenhouse in Feb and march this year. The temp inside it was a few dgrees warmer than the rest of the greenhouse and seemed to bring seeds on a bit quicker.
My father used to wrap his cannas in their pots in fleece and overwinter in the greenhouse but, then, they do lose their foliage after all, so not sure about the light.
Good luck with them!

Bren, we have bubble wrap inside our greenhouse, we also have heating which only comes on when the temperature gets below a certain temperature and switches off again when it gets warmer, I think if you get one of these it will save your plants.
We have a lot of tender plants, they all won't fit in the greenhouse this year, so i'm not sure what i'll do yet, I have to get my Lantana,Plumbago and fushias in, We have a freezer in the garage, we're thinking of putting up one of those small 3 tier plastic greenhouses next to the freezer, the heat from the freezzer may just keep the chill off the plants.

Sounds like you are really going to cosset those plants. They will do very well with all that TLC I'm sure.

I wouldn't think the wet weather would prevent seed from ripening in most cases...?

The best thing to do apparently is to tie paper bags around the seedheads so that they ripen inside then you can cut them off. No advice was given as to how to keep the bags from going soggy, though! They won't germinate if they are not ripe, and I am not at all sure if they will ever ripen indoors off the plant, Bren..

Spot on Bren
any polythene bag will do and anything you have to tie the bags on will be fine too.

Hello bren.
No need to do that.Just put a food bag over the top of them and secure it with a bread wrapper or something similar...Then go on your hols and when you return the seeds will be waiting for you ready bagged.
Hope this helps
Kev
