My First Secret Garden

When I was a kid my parents would go mushroom hunting to Twigmoor. At the time we were not too bothered about public access. We would park on a sandy verge & climb through a barbed wire fence. There was a vast expanse of sand , rabbit warrens, ferns and maggot munched mushies. Toadstools , mushrooms all looked the same to me so I never ate them.
The place was closed to the public and you could be there all day. My parents would take me to see plants that were nothing like anything we’d seen. Giant exotic Rhododendrons. What made them unusual? Well Twigmoor Woods are sandy. Rho’s love peat & acid soil. It was all imported!!!! On the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds was our little secret. Twigmoor was made public later & I went for a Teens BBQ on my bike to Scawby from Ashby.
Soil at home was Red and Very Fertile. Acid loving plants? Forget it!!

Please look up Twigmoor Woods on Google. If local pop in!!

We had no pics as it was 50 yrs ago. The place is open to the public now. When we were there the squire would have private hunts so I guess we were game too!

We live the other side of the Pennines now. In the old days my dad would get peat there!!

Hello when i was a young girl and a girl guide we used to camp in Twigmore Woods. It was great fun and not far to go as I lived just up the road off the Queensway. Happy memories!

I was there when the Queen drove past & Queensway was opened in abt 1957 or 1958. It took us a long time to walk from Grange Lane South Infants. & she just waved & woosh. There she was gone.
