A HEART/HEAD WARMING CHRISTMAS STORY (a cautionary tale)

I have been working on my dining room. I bought the wallpaper in the summer and decided to make a start in December! I would have the room ready for Christmas. I was helped with my Christmas preparations by my nearly daughter-in-law Mitch and my grandaughter Robyn. Suffering from delusions of grandeur I had decided to make my little dining room into a Chateau room. This is not the Christmas story, just the background. I must have real candle candelabra. I bought a used one off Ebay as I couldn’t find anything in the shops, it was very plain so I also bought lots of crystals to tart it up. Hazel, a friend from my french class, gave me two black wall sconces which I sprayed gold, these held five tealights each.

Here is the culprit: Yes there was a culprit.

Ebay, hand decorated chandelier

Before anyone askes …yes it’s the real Mona lisa, another gift from Hazel:o)

There were only eleven of us for Christmas dinner as elder son Adrian was prevented from catching the train by a landslide.

On the left of this pic is the little Christmas scene.

Here it is in close up. I love the rocking horse:o)

I must say here that no needle was used in the making of the curtains, all done with pins! What’s that? lazy? moi? :o)

The story? Oh yes…it’s one of those you had to be there stories really. Here goes … Robyn was helping me clear the table somewhat. Callum, Stevie, Daughter Rebecca’s (Boo’s) boys, and some other bods were in the room. Robyn, who was standing near the wall sconce, said “oops, I nearly set fire to my hair then” we looked at her and saw with horror that flames were shooting out of the back of her head! Robyn (12) has afro hair which was in a sort of short pony tail and she had applied oil before coming out. I grabbed a paper napkin off the table and smothered the flames using the napkin and my hand. She only lost the ends of her hair and we all fell about laughing …like I said, you had to be there. Perhaps it was partly relief, it could so easily have turned out differently. Perhaps candles were not such a good idea lol;-)

Glad all was OK in the end BA. Your room looks beautiful :-)

thats nice look you makes our room look like a woodcutters hut

3 Jan, 2014

.. glad you fell about laughing...
I bet even the Mona Lisa managed a chuckle ...

3 Jan, 2014

What a beautiful room , Ba .
You could take up interior design !
A bit scary though ; perhaps you could just put the candles in the sconces but not light them ?
They would still look good .
I'm really impressed , it is amazing !

3 Jan, 2014

Wow Ba that does look grand, I really like it and Mona Lisa looks right at home, how'd they smuggle her into the country??
I can well understand the laughter afterwards, you must all have been breathing huge sighs of relief......

That's what I call A la Posh! Very talented to be able to attach all those crystals so authentically - it looks really expensive. Better watch the height of your candles another time - a very lucky near accident there! Glad you were all able to laugh about it - you won't forget this Christmas!

3 Jan, 2014

Looks as good as Buckingham Palace !

3 Jan, 2014

She had a lucky escape. Glad she wasn't hurt and you could find the funny side.
Only used candles like this once and found sooty marks on the wall paper :o(

3 Jan, 2014

Thanks Richard, Snoopy and Terra, A Happy New year to you. Terra, just her unpleasant smirk lol:-))

3 Jan, 2014

Thanks Driad, it was the tealights which set fire to her hair so nothing shows if they're not lit, perhaps I could raise the sconces:-))

3 Jan, 2014

Lincs, I'm thinking of charging an entrance fee lol. As to the smuggling, if you used to watch Ello ello you'll remember the big sausages and the Fallen Madonna With the Big Boobies ...worked like a dream:-)))

3 Jan, 2014

Stera, the crystals come in 1mtr strings, each connected by a split ring, so really quite easy to work with. To make the individual drops around the candle holder part, I used cardboard and bodged hole in it:-))

3 Jan, 2014

Thank you Diane, my next project will be a sentry box outside the front door lol:-))

3 Jan, 2014

Hi Sbg, I do have marks above the chandelier, a bit of white paint will cover those though. The funny thing was, no-one moved when they saw the flames except me ... I shot across at the speed of light lol:-))

3 Jan, 2014

Very Downton Abbey - I bet you've caught the DA bug! LOL. Glad no permanent damage, BA, and it looks fab. :-))) Great job!

4 Jan, 2014

What a beautiful room Ba........Ba's Interiors a new venture then?

have you seen the rechargable candles? We have one near to Santa on the hall table, they are quite realistic as they flicker.....and haven't yet set santa's beard alight

4 Jan, 2014

Lol Barbara, I hate to admit it, but I've not watched one episode of Downton ...not my sort of thing. Now ..Call the Midwife, which I only watched because Miranda Hart was in it ... I really enjoyed that:-)) I hope all is well at Chez Barbara weatherwise? It's been horrid here, but we don't flood I'm glad to say:-))

Hi Pam, did you have a nice Christmas? Believe it or not I hadn't thought of B.A. Interiors .....hmmmm. Do you think I could get away with no sewing in someone else's home? I like to think of my work as ephemeral lol:-)) I did use one of those flickering tealight things in the little fireplace, but you can't notice the flicker on the pic, it was a cheap one though from the 99p shop. I didn't know you could buy rechargeable ones, are they expensive? I would need 10!:-))

4 Jan, 2014

Only 11 ! I find it hard just to manage with 5 !
Your room looks beautiful B.A. That was so lucky, with the hair ! It could have been disastrous, but as you said, you had to be there !
Happy New Year

4 Jan, 2014

Hi Rose, I find it hard to manage too! I'm no domestic goddess, though I like to make like an Italian momma sometimes, but always feel the stress lol:-))

4 Jan, 2014

About £20/30 for a doz from amazon maybe ebay?

My oh spends ages surfing for good prices so no idea where he
got them from.....?
christmas was good thanks x

4 Jan, 2014

Love those wall sconces ... not sure I could cope with catering for 11 ... would need an industrial sized oven! What a lucky escape with the hair ... happy new year to you and yours, Ba ... :o)

4 Jan, 2014

I'll check them out Pam, thanks:-))

4 Jan, 2014

Hi Shirley, which sconces, the culprit ones or the old gold ones each side of the mirror? I bought those via Etsy, they were from USA. I have a range cooker (rubbishy one) it has a fan oven and a normal electric oven, only two shelves each so not enough room at all. I just wish that one year everything on our plates would be properly hot, not much good at the timing lol:-))

4 Jan, 2014

The room is lovely BA - especially the window dressings, very professional.
Good to read that you didn't have a disaster on your hands. Are you the guitar player?

4 Jan, 2014

I've had this guitar (Cedric, no idea why) over 40 years. I don't play really now, but all my children do. They soon became much better than me. He comes in handy for family gatherings. My son-in-law Paul also plays guitar, they can all sing and son Ade plays fiddle ...I keep quiet now lol:-))

4 Jan, 2014

What a shock she must have had ! but I'm glad it was all right in the end.
Your room looks lovely :o))

5 Jan, 2014

B/A It looks just great, I always knew you had taste. I suppose I can take you up for the two week stay with my relatives I promise they would be on their best behaviour. Just let me know when it is convenient

5 Jan, 2014

The ones you sprayed gold, with the five tealight holders ... so pretty ... :o)

5 Jan, 2014

Thanks Hywel, She lost about an inch or so. I'm buying those rechargeable tealights now:-))

5 Jan, 2014

Thanks John ...erm... about your stay ...will you be bringing the horses? Only the stables are chocka block at the moment, so maybe put off the visit for a while eh:-)))

5 Jan, 2014

Ah,, the culprit ones lol Hazel is so generous:-)))

5 Jan, 2014

True elegance and style.......now why doesn't that surprise me in the least!

:-))

6 Jan, 2014

I've no idea Chris, but I think the conversational french lessons have gone to my head lol. They're every Monday morning, so today I tried to tell them in french about poor Robyn's mishap:-))

6 Jan, 2014

Tres bien, mon amie!!!

6 Jan, 2014

I'm practising for May when a friend I met at French class (Catherine) and I are off to Giverney et Fontainebleu, Montmatre et un excursion en bateau sur la seine. Un voyage en autocar de quatre jours. Mes enfants ont dit qu'ils prendront soin de Derek. Got that last bit (prendront soin) off Google translate, but can't help thinking it's wrong:-))

7 Jan, 2014

So BA fashions are going French Chic this year, very upmarket.....Can't wait to see the frog leg tankini designs (;-) xx

7 Jan, 2014

Prendront's OK BA!

7 Jan, 2014

BeAutiful! Glad hair wasn't too tragic! Love the curtain fabric and draping! Makes you wonder how they coped in 18th century with all those huge wigs. Must have been a lot of hair on fire back then!

7 Jan, 2014

Now look here Annella, who are you saying has got frogs legs? I'll have you know men have fought and died over my legs... so there 8~p

7 Jan, 2014

Thanks Stera, it just didn't sound very caring lol:-))

7 Jan, 2014

Thanks Karen, the men wore them too didn't they ...must have been a laugh a minute. The good thing is they could just pull 'em off and stamp on them:-))

7 Jan, 2014

Prendront is only the 3rd person plural of the "taking" bit. Soin is care, and if you say it slowly it does sound rather caring...
Lovely image of men whipping their flaming wigs off and stamping on them!

7 Jan, 2014

Yes, and I think I'd quite like hair you could just pull off and stamp on! My hair needs a good stamping right now!

7 Jan, 2014

Thanks Stera, a little over my head I'm afraid. Only been learning french for a short time, never did it at school, I do love it though:-))

8 Jan, 2014

Are you all settled in now Karen? I don't imagine that stamping is a recognised method of hair improvement:-))

8 Jan, 2014

Sorry BA, only trying to reassure you. Ive always loved it too, thanks partly to a very inspiring teacher in the first couple of years.

8 Jan, 2014

Our teacher is called Georgette, most of the time she sits there with her head in her hands or a bemused look on her face. She lived in Cannes and was evacuated as a child to Algeria. I think she wishes she was back there lol. We all have a wonderful time on Monday mornings:-))

8 Jan, 2014

You just need to use it , Ba . The odd mistake is surely forgivable . They are a bit against Frenglais , aren't they ?
I'd love a refresher course here too , also I'd like a bash at Latin .

8 Jan, 2014

Phew! I got very confused with the men stamping on the frogs legs.....

I only know kitchen french so can at least eat!

the french names for fruit are nice, I thought pamplemousse sounded lovely until I found out it was grapefruit!
bu there's always chocolat :0)

8 Jan, 2014

Driad, at the thought of speaking ... all the words leave my head :-( I suppose by speaking a romance language, you are, in a way .... erm almost speaking Latin:-))

9 Jan, 2014

Pammy Pammy Pammy.... what have I told you about thinking of men and legs ...and frogs. It's not good for you. Keep your mind on innocent things like flowers and cooking and childrens happy little faces:-)))))

9 Jan, 2014

Ooh I, ll stick to chocolate.......

9 Jan, 2014

Very wise, I approve:-))

9 Jan, 2014

Another great read BA, lol, very glad your family member was ok :)

28 Feb, 2014

Thanks Daylily, I've bought rechargeable tealights now:-))
