LITTLE FRONT GARDEN MAKEOVER AND TIDY

I’ve been sorting out my front garden … bit achey today lol, unusual for one so young 8~}
Over the last couple of days I’ve planted 72 pansies, taken out spent snapdragons etc and moved some plants. I was annoyed and surprised to see a large mound surrounding Lady Emma Hamilton’s base and wondered who the heck would do a thing like that?! As I started clearing it there were a lot of orangey ants … an ant hill!! Two of my four roses on the front had ant hills, I’ve never seen anything like this before and would be interested to know if anyone else has?
I thought I would show you some plants on the front which had performed well this year and, as you can see, are still looking good now. The first two pics are of a heuchera called Paris, so many showy flowers throughout the season.

I’ll have to look for the name of this lovely fuchsia, it’s been fantastic. Hywel has given me the name, it’s f. Garden News, and what a fantastic plant it is. It’s the most showy hardy fuchsia I’ve seen:o)

and in close up

Lovely little violas, great value.

and of course, aLady Emma:o)

I’m having a little rest today and deciding what to do with the back garden which didn’t please me too much this year. Everything seemed to go mad and overpower other less vigorous plants and some grew a lot bigger than I expected lol and must be moved:o))

Hi BA, that heuchera is a beauty must go on my list. Its great to see lady Emma still blooming and I hope we get a few more good days to enjoy the late roses. As to the ants I have only found them when I`ve moved paving stones but never come across any ant hills I`m glad to say.

Hi Phyl, these were orangey coloured as well ...may be aliens? I'll have to google. I think Paris was bought from the market stall in Walsall.....you know the one ...yes that's right lol:-))

Lovely blooms Ba, and that Heuchera Paris is amazing . . I've never seen one so thick with flowers! Yes, I've seen orange ants here, and we do have anthills: in fact our garden is "woodpecker heaven" :)

That Heuchera is lovely. I have been lifting and moving some of my huge ferns. They don't give up easily. I have to loosen them with a fork then a spade then onto a bin liner to slide them to their new space. My husband could hardly lift them into the new hole when I asked for help. Us gardeners are a tuff bunch. :o)

All looks lovely, I do love that heuchera in particular

The Heuchera in your first two pictures is fantastic! Enjoy the rest...before you tackle the back garden lol!

It all looks beautiful, Ba! :)x

As for the ants...Idk...
...they remind me of Africa, though...do they bite?!?

What a lovely display on Heuchera Paris, another to lookout for, dont envy you the Ant hills Ba!

At the risk of repeating everybody, the heuchera is fantastic - never seen one like it.

Your garden is lovely :o) I enjoy seeing nice front gardens.
I hope your aches are better today !
I think your unknown Fuchsia is Garden News :o)

That's right Hywel,I remember now, I did buy Garden news oh frabjous day ... it's hardy too!!! I think this must be the most showy hardy fuchsia ever, I'll put its name by its pic:-))))

Thanks Sheila, I've googled and I think it's Lasius Flavus (sounds like a gladiator) aka the yellow meadow ant, uk's most skilled nest builder ...I wish it would take its skills elsewhere:-))

Hi Linda, I find some plants inpossible to divide as well as move, even when I stand on the spade it doesn't always go through the tough roots. Good tip for moving big plants though, thanks:-)

26 Sep, 2013

Thanks Louisa and olive, the individual flowers are larger than the usual heuchera flowers too:-))

Hi Waddy, if I had just seen the leaves (green with silver veiling, I probably wouldn't have bought it, but it was in flower when I first saw it in May:-)

Karen as for the ants biting ....I never gave them the chance:-))

26 Sep, 2013

Thanks Carole and Stera, it's a Terra Nova heuchera and keeps reblooming all season. As for the anthills Carole, I don't envy me either:-))

26 Sep, 2013

Just spray 'em, Ba...
I know it's not environmentally correct, these days...but...

26 Sep, 2013

I removed the hills with the hoe handle and hands, ouch! :-)

26 Sep, 2013

Gralew, if you look now I've put its name on cos Hywel gave me it and its Garden News and the good news is it's hardy:-))

I've had lots of those ants this year Ba, they've made some big anthills in my borders and lawn. I raked them over and added a bit of ant powder. The Fuchsia and Heuchera are lovely, both have been added to the "list" Lol x

Isn't it strange Annella, I've not had anthills before ...and I hurt my fingers getting rid of it from the base of my roses ....flippin thorns:-(

Do you get ant-spray, in the UK, Ba?

I know, they don't do any harm...but, they're usually "farming" something which does...

...so I just watch where they're going and spray around the base of that plant...

...and keep going as they move on...

Oh Karen the Evil:-)) I must admit I have used Nippon in the past when the critters invaded my house, but I would feel guilty spraying them. I believe they cause more damage than is thought though. I've noticed ants nests at the roots when digging up clematis that had died from wilt, so I'm pretty sure they loosen roots as well as farming aphids. I'm always afraid of harming birds and goodies:-(
